Automatic cell/nucleus detection is a prerequisite for various quantitative analyses on microscopy image. However, previous deep learning methods require enough annotated microscopy images for better performance, which is a great challenge for microscopy image due to limited annotation and high cost. This paper proposes an end-to-end adversarial learning model with unsupervised domain adaptation for cell/nucleus detection. Different staining microscopy images transformation and cell/nucleus detection are merged into one end-to-end model to achieve mutual restriction of accuracy. Furthermore, a cross-domain consistency loss is introduced, which can refine the results of image transformation and localize cells synchronously. The experiments conclude that proposed method achieves the best F1 scores compared with other methods on cell/nucleus detection of different staining microscopy images. Moreover, ablation study also approves the effectiveness of cross-domain consistency loss.

Graph few-shot learning has garnered significant attention for its ability to rapidly adapt to downstream tasks with limited labeled data, sparking considerable interest among researchers. Recent advancements in graph few-shot learning models have exhibited superior performance across diverse applications. Despite their successes, several limitations still exist. First, existing models in the meta-training phase predominantly focus on instance-level features within tasks, neglecting crucial set-level features essential for distinguishing between different categories. Second, these models often utilize query sets directly on classifiers trained with support sets containing only a few labeled examples, overlooking potential distribution shifts between these sets and leading to suboptimal performance. Finally, previous models typically require necessitate abundant labeled data from base classes to extract transferable knowledge, which is typically infeasible in real-world scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a novel model named STAR, which leverages Set funcTions and optimAl tRansport for enhancing unsupervised graph few-shot learning. Specifically, STAR utilizes expressive set functions to obtain set-level features in an unsupervised manner and employs optimal transport principles to align the distributions of support and query sets, thereby mitigating distribution shift effects. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that STAR can capture more task-relevant information and enhance generalization capabilities. Graph neural networks have been demonstrated as a powerful paradigm for effectively learning graph-structured data on the web and mining content from it. Current leading graph models require a large number of labeled samples for training, which unavoidably leads to overfitting in few-shot scenarios. Recent research has sought to alleviate this issue by simultaneously leveraging graph learning and meta-learning paradigms. However, these graph meta-learning models assume the availability of numerous meta-training tasks to learn transferable meta-knowledge. Such assumption may not be feasible in the real world due to the difficulty of constructing tasks and the substantial costs involved. Therefore, we propose a SiMple yet effectIve approach for graph few-shot Learning with fEwer tasks, named SMILE. We introduce a dual-level mixup strategy, encompassing both within-task and across-task mixup, to simultaneously enrich the available nodes and tasks in meta-learning. Moreover, we explicitly leverage the prior information provided by the node degrees in the graph to encode expressive node representations. Theoretically, we demonstrate that SMILE can enhance the model generalization ability. Empirically, SMILE consistently outperforms other competitive models by a large margin across all evaluated datasets with in-domain and cross-domain settings. Our anonymous code can be found here. In-context learning is a promising approach for offline reinforcement learning (RL) to handle online tasks, which can be achieved by providing task prompts. Recent works demonstrated that in-context RL could emerge with self-improvement in a trial-and-error manner when treating RL tasks as an across-episodic sequential prediction problem. Despite the self-improvement not requiring gradient updates, current works still suffer from high computational costs when the across-episodic sequence increases with task horizons. To this end, we propose an In-context Decision Transformer (IDT) to achieve self-improvement in a high-level trial-and-error manner. Specifically, IDT is inspired by the efficient hierarchical structure of human decision-making and thus reconstructs the sequence to consist of high-level decisions instead of low-level actions that interact with environments. As one high-level decision can guide multi-step low-level actions, IDT naturally avoids excessively long sequences and solves online tasks more efficiently. Experimental results show that IDT achieves state-of-the-art in long-horizon tasks over current in-context RL methods. In particular, the online evaluation time of our IDT is 36× times faster than baselines in the D4RL benchmark and 27× times faster in the Grid World benchmark. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Information Entropy Invariance: Enhancing Length Extrapolation in Attention Mechanisms

Since the emergence of research on improving the length extrapolation capabilities of large models in 2021, some studies have made modifications to the scaling factor in the scaled dot-product attention mechanism as part of their proposed methods without rigorous theoretical justifications. To fill this gap, we propose two new scaled temperatures based on entropy invariance to enhance length extrapolation. First, a training-free method InfoScale is designed for dot-product attention, and preserves focus on original tokens during length extrapolation by ensuring consistent entropy. Second, we theoretically analyze the impact of scaling (CosScale) on cosine attention. Experimental data demonstrates that combining InfoScale and CosScale achieves state-of-the-art performance on the GAU-α model with a context window extended to 64 times the training length, and outperforms seven existing methods. Our analysis reveals that significantly increasing CosScale approximates the Windowed Attention, and highlights the significance of attention score dilution as a key challenge in long-range context handling. Human skeleton-based action recognition has long been an indispensable aspect of artificial intelligence. Current state-of-the-art methods tend to consider only the dependencies between connected skeletal joints, limiting their ability to capture non-linear dependencies between physically distant joints. Moreover, most existing approaches distinguish action classes by estimating the probability density of motion representations, yet the high-dimensional nature of human motions invokes inherent difficulties in accomplishing such measurements. In this paper, we seek to tackle these challenges from two directions: (1) We propose a novel dependency refinement approach that explicitly models dependencies between any pair of joints, effectively transcending the limitations imposed by joint distance. (2) We further propose a framework that utilizes the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion to differentiate action classes without being affected by data dimensionality, and mathematically derive learning objectives guaranteeing precise recognition. Histological image classification plays a crucial role in cancer diagnosis. However, the acquisition of well-labeled histological images is prohibitively expensive, and obtaining rare abnormal samples is challenging. Therefore, applying few-shot learning methods to histological image classification tasks holds significant clinical value. Nevertheless, existing research predom-inantly relies on coarse-grained image classification approaches based on natural image datasets, which struggle to address the fine-grained challenges encountered in histological image classification, such as intra-class diversity and inter-class similarity. To tackle this issue, this study proposes a novel few-shot fine-grained classification method for histological images, named “Category-Aware Feature Map Reconstruction Network.” This method employs channel weights to localize the differences between inter-class and intra-class regions, composed of intra-class channel weights and inter-class channel weights, collectively referred to as category-aware weights. Specifically, intra-class channel weights indicate the matching degree of salient regions within the support set of a particular class, while inter-class channel weights represent the degree of containing distinct information between classes. The category-aware weights are utilized to transform the support feature maps and query feature maps, generating feature maps that capture differentiating details between categories. Finally, the distance between the transformed query feature map and support feature map is calculated to achieve probabilistic predictions for the categories. On a histological few-shot dataset, this method achieves an accuracy of 90.23% using ResNet-12 as the feature extractor, surpassing the baseline model by 5.24% and outperforming other few-shot methods by at least 10% in the 5-way 10-shot experimental setting. Human pose estimation in videos has long been a compelling yet challenging task within the realm of computer vision. Nevertheless, this task remains difficult because of the complex video scenes, such as video defocus and self-occlusion. Recent methods strive to integrate multi-frame visual features generated by a backbone network for pose estimation. However, they often ignore the useful joint information encoded in the initial heatmap, which is a by-product of the backbone generation. Comparatively, methods that attempt to refine the initial heatmap fail to consider any spatio-temporal motion features. As a result, the performance of existing methods for pose estimation falls short due to the lack of ability to leverage both local joint (heatmap) information and global motion (feature) dynamics. To address this problem, we propose a novel joint-motion mutual learning framework for pose estimation, which effectively concentrates on both local joint dependency and global pixel-level motion dynamics. Specifically, we introduce a context-aware joint learner that adaptively leverages initial heatmaps and motion flow to retrieve robust local joint feature. Given that local joint feature and global motion flow are complementary, we further propose a progressive joint-motion mutual learning that synergistically exchanges information and interactively learns between joint feature and motion flow to improve the capability of the model. More importantly, to capture more diverse joint and motion cues, we theoretically analyze and propose an information orthogonality objective to avoid learning redundant information from multi-cues. Empirical experiments show our method outperforms prior arts on three challenging benchmarks. © 2024 ACM.
