Relative peripheral refractive errors in Chinese children with myopic anisometropia

AIM:To evaluate the effects of microlens design of peripheral defocus modifying spectacle lenses(PDMSLs)and non-microlens design of PDMSLs on controlling myopia progression in children and ***:A systematic search was carried out in the PubMed,Cochrane Library,Embase,CNKI,and Web of Science *** search targeted randomized controlled trials(RCTs)and cohort studies(CTs)that explored the effects of PDMSLs on myopia control among children and *** Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale were employed to evaluate the risk of bias in the included *** published biases of the included studies were evaluated using Egger’s ***:Nine studies(7 RCTs,2 CTs)were included,involving 4332 participants in the PDMSLs group and 7317 participants in the single vision lenses(SVLs)*** showed that PDMSLs with microlens design had lower change in spherical equivalent refraction(SER)than SVLs at 6,12,18,and 24mo after wearing glasses,with reductions of 0.19 D(95%CI:0.14 to 0.24,P<0.00001),0.36 D(95%CI:0.25 to 0.46,P<0.00001),0.43 D(95%CI:0.32 to 0.55,P<0.00001),and 0.51 D(95%CI:0.33 to 0.69,P<0.00001),*** changes in axial length(AL)were also lower in PDMSLs compared to SVLs,with reductions of-0.09 mm(95%CI:-0.13 to-0.04,P=0.0002),-0.15 mm(95%CI:-0.21 to-0.08,P<0.00001),-0.27 mm(95%CI:-0.34 to-0.20,P<0.00001),and-0.29 mm(95%CI:-0.38 to-0.20,P<0.00001),*** was no significant difference between the non-microlens group and SVLs in controlling the changes of SER and AL in myopia(both P>0.05).CONCLUSION:The synthesized evidence indicates superior myopia management outcomes with microlens design of PDMSLs compared to both SVLs and nonmicrolens design of PDMSLs in children and adolescents.

AIM:To investigate the antioxidant protective effect of Lycium barbarum glycopeptide(LbGP)pretreatment on retinal ischemia-reperfusion(I/R)injury(RIRI)in ***:RIRI was induced in Sprague Dawley rats through anterior chamber perfusion,and pretreatment involved administering LbGP via gavage for *** 24h of reperfusion,serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and creatinine(CREA)levels,retinal structure,expression of Caspase-3 and Caspase-8,superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity,and malondialdehyde(MDA)in the retina were ***:The pretreatment with LbGP effectively protected the retina and retinal tissue from edema and inflammation in the ganglion cell layer(GCL)and nerve fiber layer(NFL)of rats subjected to RIRI,as shown by light microscopy and optical coherence tomography(OCT).Serum AST was higher in the model group than in the blank group(P=0.042),but no difference was found in ALT,AST,and CREA across the LbGP groups and model ***-3 expression was higher in the model group than in the blank group(P=0.006),but no difference was found among LbGP groups and the model ***-8 expression was higher in the model group than in the blank group(P=0.000),and lower in the 400 mg/kg LbGP group than in the model group(P=0.016).SOD activity was lower in the model group than in the blank group(P=0.001),and the decrease was slower in the 400 mg/kg LbGP group than in the model group(P=0.003).MDA content was higher in the model group than in the blank group(P=0.001),and lower in the 400 mg/kg LbGP group than in the model group(P=0.016).The pretreatment with LbGP did not result in any observed liver or renal toxicity in the ***:LbGP pretreatment exhibits dosedependent anti-inflammatory,and antioxidative effects by reducing Caspase-8 expression,preventing declines of SOD activity,and decreasing MDA content in the RIRI rat model.

Comparison of uniform resampling and nonuniform sampling direct-reconstruction methods in k-space for FD-OCT

The nonuniform distribution of interference spectrum in wavenumber k-space is a key issue to limit the imaging quality of Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography(FD-OCT).At present,the reconstruction quality at different depths among a variety of processing methods in k-space is still *** simulated and experimental interference spectra at different depths,the effects of common six processing methods including uniform resampling(linear interpolation(LI),cubic spline interpolation(CSI),time-domain interpolation(TDI),and K-B window convolution)and nonuniform sampling direct-reconstruction(Lomb periodogram(LP)and nonuniform discrete Fourier transform(NDFT))on the reconstruction quality of FD-OCT were quantitatively analyzed and compared in this *** results obtained by using simulated and experimental data were *** the experimental results,the averaged peak intensity,axial resolution,and signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of NDFT at depth from 0.5 to 3.0mm were improved by about 1.9 dB,1.4 times,and 11.8 dB,respectively,compared to the averaged indices of all the uniform resampling methods at all ***,the improvements of the above three indices of LP were 2.0 dB,1.4 times,and 11.7 dB,*** analysis method and the results obtained in this work are helpful to select an appropriate processing method in k-space,so as to improve the imaging quality of FD-OCT.

Causal relationship between glycemic traits and inflammatory eye diseases and their complications, and myopia: a Mendelian randomization analysis

Current evidence on glycemic traits’ causal links to inflammatory eye diseases, complications, and myopia remains limited and inconsistent, particularly regarding glucose regulation. This study evaluates specific indicators to address these knowledge gaps. A two-sample Mendelian randomization framework from a genome-wide association study was used. Causal estimates were obtained using inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median, simple model and weighted model methods. Cochran Q test, MR-Egger regression, MR-PRESSO and leave-one-out analysis were used to assess heterogeneity and pleiotropy. Higher proinsulin levels correlated with glaucoma and POAG risks (OR = 1.263, 95%CI = 1.020–1.563, P = 0.032;OR = 1.409, 95%CI = 1.075–1.846, P = 0.01). Higher BMI and fasting insulin were cataract risk factors (OR = 1.261, 95%CI = 1.135–1.401, P < 0.001;OR = 1.645, 95%CI = 1.100–2.460, P = 0.015);BMI is a risk factor for keratitis (OR = 1.463, 95%CI = 1.071–1.997, P = 0.017). Adiponectin protected against chronic conjunctivitis (OR = 0.464, 95%CI = 0.265–0.811, P = 0.007), HbA1c against retinal vein occlusion (OR = 0.266, 95%CI = 0.105–0.675, P = 0.005). High adiponectin reduced myopia (OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.984–0.997, P = 0.003), while high HbA1c increased it (OR = 1.018, 95% CI = 1.008–1.027, P < 0.001). Glycemic profiles increase the risk for inflammatory eye diseases and complications including keratitis, glaucoma, and cataracts but protect against chronic conjunctivitis and retinal vein occlusion. Low adiponectin and high HbA1c raise myopia risk. Targeting modifiable factors (physical activity/sugar intake) suggests novel myopia prevention strategies. © The Author(s) 2025.

Objective To investigate the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and goblet cell-stimulating effects of a suspension of Ophiopogon japonicus (L. f.) Ker Gawl. ( O . japonicus , Mai Dong) extract combined with hyaluronic acid (HA) in the mouse model with dry eye disease (DED). Methods A DED mouse model was induced using benzalkonium chloride (BAK), followed by treatment with O. japonicus extract-containing eye drops at varying concentrations. Experimental groups included a normal control, a DED model control, a positive control, and an O. japonicus extract-treated group. Corneal fluorescein staining and tear break-up time (TBUT) were used to assess tear film stability and ocular surface integrity. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) measured inflammatory factor levels in corneal and conjunctival tissues, whereas western blot (WB) analyzed key antioxidant and inflammatory markers, including nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (2Nrf2) and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1). Periodic acid-schiff (PAS) staining and immunofluorescence were used to evaluate goblet cell density and mucin secretion. Results O. japonicus extract significantly improved corneal damage, reduced fluorescein staining scores, prolonged TBUT, and increased tear secretion. It downregulated inflammatory markers, including interleukin-8 (IL-8), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) while upregulating Nrf2, HO-1, and the interleukin-13 (IL-13)/IFN-γ ratio, alleviating oxidative stress and inflammation. PAS staining showed increased conjunctival goblet cell density and restored mucin secretion, enhancing tear film stability. Conclusion O. japonicus extract demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and goblet cell-stimulating effects in a DED model, with good biocompatibility and promising therapeutic potential. Future research should optimize extraction processes and validate their efficacy and safety in clinical settings.
