License plate recognition plays a critical role in many practical applications, but license plates of large vehicles are difficult to be recognized due to the factors of low resolution, contamination, low illumination, and occlusion, to name a few. To overcome the above factors, the transportation management department generally introduces the enlarged license plate behind the rear of a vehicle. However, enlarged license plates have high diversity as they are non-standard in position, size, and style. Furthermore, the background regions contain a variety of noisy information which greatly disturbs the recognition of license plate characters. Existing works have not studied this challenging problem. In this work, we first address the enlarged license plate recognition problem and contribute a dataset containing 9342 images, which cover most of the challenges of real scenes. However, the created data are still insufficient to train deep methods of enlarged license plate recognition, and building large-scale training data is very time-consuming and high labor cost. To handle this problem, we propose a novel task-level disentanglement generation framework based on the Disentangled Generation Network (DGNet), which disentangles the generation into the text generation and background generation in an end-to-end manner to effectively ensure diversity and integrity, for robust enlarged license plate recognition. Extensive experiments on the created dataset are conducted, and we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in three representative text recognition frameworks. © 2022, CC BY.

RGB and thermal source data suffer from both shared and specific challenges, and how to explore and exploit them plays a critical role to represent the target appearance in RGBT tracking. In this paper, we propose a novel challenge-aware neural network to handle the modality-shared challenges (e.g., fast motion, scale variation and occlusion) and the modality-specific ones (e.g., illumination variation and thermal crossover) for RGBT tracking. In particular, we design several parameter-shared branches in each layer to model the target appearance under the modality-shared challenges, and several parameter-independent branches under the modality-specific ones. Based on the observation that the modality-specific cues of different modalities usually contains the complementary advantages, we propose a guidance module to transfer discriminative features from one modality to another one, which could enhance the discriminative ability of some weak modality. Moreover, all branches are aggregated together in an adaptive manner and parallel embedded in the backbone network to efficiently form more discriminative target representations. These challenge-aware branches are able to model the target appearance under certain challenges so that the target representations can be learnt by a few parameters even in the situation of insufficient training data. From the experimental results we will show that our method operates at a real-time speed while performing well against the state-of-the-art methods on three benchmark datasets. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Hand Hygiene Assessment via Joint Step Segmentation and key Action Scorer

Hand hygiene is a standard six-step hand-washing action proposed by the World Health organization (WHo). However, there is no good way to supervise medical staff to do hand hygiene, which brings the potential risk of disease spread. Existing action assessment works usually make an overall quality prediction on an entire video. However, the internal structures of hand hygiene action are important in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, we propose a novel fine-grained learning framework to perform step segmentation and key action scorer in a joint manner for accurate hand hygiene assessment. Existing temporal segmentation methods usually employ multi-stage convolutional network to improve the segmentation robustness, but easily lead to over-segmentation due to the lack of the long-range dependence. To address this issue, we design a multi-stage convolution-transformer network for step segmentation. Based on the observation that each hand-washing step involves several key actions which determine the hand-washing quality, we design a set of key action scorers to evaluate the quality of key actions in each step. In addition, there lacks a unified dataset in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, under the supervision of medical staff, we contribute a video dataset that contains 300 video sequences with fine-grained annotations. Extensive experiments on the dataset suggest that our method well assesses hand hygiene videos and achieves outstanding performance. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

LasHeR: A large-scale high-diversity benchmark for RGBT tracking

RGBT tracking receives a surge of interest in the computer vision community, but this research field lacks a large-scale and high-diversity benchmark dataset, which is essential for both the training of deep RGBT trackers and the comprehensive evaluation of RGBT tracking methods. To this end, we present a Large-scale High-diversity benchmark for short-term RGBT tracking (LasHeR) in this work. LasHeR consists of 1224 visible and thermal infrared video pairs with more than 730K frame pairs in total. Each frame pair is spatially aligned and manually annotated with a bounding box, making the dataset well and densely annotated. LasHeR is highly diverse capturing from a broad range of object categories, camera viewpoints, scene complexities and environmental factors across seasons, weathers, day and night. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation of 12 RGBT tracking algorithms on the LasHeR dataset and present detailed analysis. In addition, we release the unaligned version of LasHeR to attract the research interest for alignment-free RGBT tracking, which is a more practical task in real-world applications. Federated Client-tailored Adapter for Medical Image Segmentation

Medical image segmentation in X-ray images is beneficial for computer-aided diagnosis and lesion localization. Existing methods mainly fall into a centralized learning paradigm, which is inapplicable in the practical medical scenario that only has access to distributed data islands. Federated Learning has the potential to offer a distributed solution but struggles with heavy training instability due to client-wise domain heterogeneity (including distribution diversity and class imbalance). In this paper, we propose a novel Federated Client-tailored Adapter (FCA) framework for medical image segmentation, which achieves stable and client-tailored adaptive segmentation without sharing sensitive local data. Specifically, the federated adapter stirs universal knowledge in off-the-shelf medical foundation models to stabilize the federated training process. In addition, we develop two client-tailored federated updating strategies that adaptively decompose the adapter into common and individual components, then globally and independently update the parameter groups associated with common client-invariant and individual client-specific units, respectively. They further stabilize the heterogeneous federated learning process and realize optimal client-tailored instead of sub-optimal global-compromised segmentation models. Extensive experiments on three large-scale datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed FCA framework for federated medical segmentation. © 2025, CC BY.

In the past three decades, a large number of metaheuristics have been proposed and shown high performance in solving complex optimization problems. While most variation operators in existing metaheuristics are empirically designed, this paper aims to design new operators automatically, which are expected to be search space independent and thus exhibit robust performance on different problems. For this purpose, this work first investigates the influence of translation invariance, scale invariance, and rotation invariance on the search behavior and performance of some representative operators. Then, we deduce the generic form of translation, scale, and rotation invariant operators. Afterwards, a principled approach is proposed for the automated design of operators, which searches for highperformance operators based on the deduced generic form. The experimental results demonstrate that the operators generated by the proposed approach outperform state-of-theart ones on a variety of problems with complex landscapes and up to 1000 decision variables. © 2021, CC BY.

Multi-interactive dual-decoder for RGB-thermal salient object detection

RGB-thermal salient object detection (SoD) aims to segment the common prominent regions of visible image and corresponding thermal infrared image that we call it RGBT SoD. Existing methods don’t fully explore and exploit the potentials of complementarity of different modalities and multi-type cues of image contents, which play a vital role in achieving accurate results. In this paper, we propose a multi-interactive dual-decoder to mine and model the multi-type interactions for accurate RGBT SoD. In specific, we first encode two modalities into multi-level multi-modal feature representations. Then, we design a novel dual-decoder to conduct the interactions of multi-level features, two modalities and global contexts. With these interactions, our method works well in diversely challenging scenarios even in the presence of invalid modality. Finally, we carry out extensive experiments on public RGBT and RGBD SoD datasets, and the results show that the proposed method achieves the outstanding performance against state-of-the-art algorithms. Existing Lexical Punctuation Prediction methods are mainly trained on the standard clean data while losing the generalization in practical automatic speech recognition (ASR) system with ubiquitous transcription errors. To bridge the gap between clean training data and noisy testing data, we propose three random (3R) data augmentation strategies: random word deletion (RWD), random word substitution (RWS), and random phoneme edition (RPE) in both word and phoneme levels on the training dataset. Specifically, we contribute an acoustically similar vocabulary with phoneme level editions for acoustically similar word substitution. In addition, we first introduce the RoBERTa-large model into a punctuation prediction task to capture the semantics and the long-distance dependencies in language. Extensive experiments on the English dataset IWSLT2011 yield to a new state-of-the-art comparing to the prevalent punctuation prediction methods.

Automatic report generation plays a crucial role in clinical practice by alleviating the heavy workload on doctors and helping to prevent misdiagnoses or missed diagnoses. In the context of radiology report generation, knowledge injection is essential, particularly with the encoder-decoder framework commonly used in image captioning tasks. However, existing studies predominantly rely on expert knowledge, which is both challenging to collect and lacks universality. Additionally, this expert knowledge typically influences single-mode information and overlooks the importance of bridging the visual-to-textual gap. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid graph-based approach for radiology report generation. our method integrates two key components: the semantic homogeneous graph (SHG) and the cross-modal heterogeneous graph (CHG). Specifically, the SHG is constructed by mining semantic relationships between keywords across the entire corpus to generate universal knowledge. The CHG, conversely, is built from visual features, textual features, and corresponding knowledge embeddings, enabling knowledge injection during modal interaction. By leveraging graph convolutional networks to enhance graph embeddings, our model improves the quality of generated reports. Experimental results on two widely used benchmark datasets, IU-Xray and MIMIC-CXR, demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Notably, our method achieves a BLEU-4 score of 0.185 on the IU-Xray dataset and an F1 score of 0.418 on the MIMIC-CXR dataset, significantly outperforming existing methods.
