FPGA-based real-time depth estimation for 3D video system

Depth estimation is one of the key techniques in the front-end of stereoscopic video system which still faces some challenges, such as the depth accuracy, real-time processing and high resolution depth map generation. This paper proposes a hardware solution for real-time depth estimation to mainly resolve the speed issue, the accuracy as well as the high resolution. The system is implemented on a single FPGA, which uses match algorithm mixed by census transform and sum of absolute differences (SAD) to obtain a dense depth map. The design makes full use of the massive parallel resources and pipeline architectures of FPGA to improve data through-out and system clock frequency. Experiment results show that the proposed method is reasonable and can achieve real-time depth estimation for the full high definition (HD) (1920×1080) resolution video, with the disparity search range up to 240 pixels and the frame rate up to 69.6 frame/s. The performance of the proposed hardware system meets the requirements of 3D video system.

A low complexity adaptive loop filter algorithm for multi-view video coding

Adaptive loop filter (ALF) is a newly introduced technique for high-definition multi-view video coding. Its basic idea is to estimate Wiener filter parameters at the encoder and filter the reconstructed image with them to depress coding artifacts. ALF can improve video compression in both objective quality and subjective performance by adopting Wiener filtering with the goal of minimizing the mean square error between the original frame and the coded frame. However, the high computation complexity prevents it from the real-time application. Therefore, a low complexity algorithm is proposed to speed up the process of ALF. The basic idea of the method is to exploit inter-view correlation and inter-layer correlation to reduce the cumbersome process. We not only narrow down the maximum division depth candidates of the chrominance component and luminance component for every frame, but also adaptively terminate the process of deciding block control (DBC) of most frames in advance. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve the encoding time saving up to about 61% for ALF compared with the HEVC-based test model (i. e., HTM 6.1) without significant loss of encoding performance. Therefore, our algorithm can achieve a better tradeoff between coding efficiency and the ALF complexity, and well improve the performance of ALF.

Multi-view video plus depth (MVD) is a new 3D video format that would support 3D application developed by MPEG. Such a format is a combination of texture video and associated depth maps. For 3 viewing angles, there are 6 MVD components (texture center view, texture left view, texture right view, depth center view, depth left view and depth right view) in total for every time entity. The AVC-based test model (ATM) implements the joint encoding of MVD format. And due to the functionality and validity, the ATM makes the encoding of MVD more and more effective. Therefore, this makes compressed bit-streams very sensitive to transmission errors and leads to error propagation easily. In order to avoid the error propagation, effective error concealment (EC) algorithms are necessary. An error concealment method for ATM is proposed in this paper to improve video quality at decoder when video bit stream data with transmission errors. Based on the relationships between depth map and texture map, the inter-view correlation and the intra-view correlation, this paper proposes the corresponding operations to reconstruct the lost MBs in different views. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to the conventional concealment algorithms in terms of subjective evaluation.

Stabilizing ordering instead of randomness in alloy semiconductor materials is a powerful means to change their physical properties. We used scanning tunneling and transmission electron microscopies to reveal the existence of an unrecognized ordering in ternary III-V materials. The lazarevicite short-range order, found in the shell of InAs1−xSbx nanowires, is driven by the strong Sb-Sb repulsion along 〈110〉 atomic chains during their incorporation on unreconstructed {110} sidewalls. Its spontaneous formation under group-III-rich conditions of growth offers the prospect to broaden the limited classes of ordered structures occurring in III-V semiconductor alloys.

Online-programming IP design and implementation based on SoC

It is mainly proposed that the design and implementation for an online-programming IP core based on MV10, an SoC, which is an 8-bit MCU having passed the silicon verification with Global Foundry 0.35um mix-signal library in this thesis. The online-programming IP core can write BIN file into the on-chip SRAM, which is mainly controlled by erasing state machine and programming state machine, for program debugging with high accuracy-communication and error self-detection. The online-programming IP core proposed in this thesis can also be used in other SoCs. © Yang et al.

The thesis mainly proposed a novel design method for Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) controller based on modulation waveform cycle normalization. T is the period of sinusoidal modulation waveform, and T/n is the cycle of triangular carrier. Shift registers and adders of SPWM controller were designed to translate the 2n numerical value for SPWM waveform on-off switching points, which were calculated offline, to control the level of the outpout SPWM waveform,which is the key point of modulation waveform cycle normalization, hi the thesis RTL function simulation verification by ModelSim and testing for FPGA have been achieved successfully. The results show that the novel SPWM controller is reliable, which has practical significance. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Multi-view video plus depth (MVD) is a new 3D video format that would support 3D application developed by MPEG. Such a format is a combination of texture video and associated depth maps. Consequently, for the efficient transmission of 3D video signals, the compression of texture and depth maps is required to reduce the inter-view correlation, the correlation between texture and the depth maps as well as the spatio-temporal correlation. Therefore, this makes the compressed bit-streams very sensitive to transmission errors and leads to error propagation easier. In order to prevent the error propagation, effective error concealment (EC) algorithms are necessary. An error concealment method for multi-view video plus depth is proposed in this paper. Based on the corrections between depth map and texture map and the spatial corrections, the lost macroblocks (MBs) are classified into three types: simple MB, less complex MB and complex MB. Following the classification, corresponding operations, including candidate motion vector refinement EC algorithm, depth-based outer boundary matching algorithm and error concealment with adjustable weights, are used to reconstruct the lost MBs. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the complexity of EC algorithm and ensure the video quality at the same time.

Recently just noticeable distortion (JND) has been highly successful in improving the video coding efficiency. Foveated JND (FJND) is an extension of the JND by further exploiting the human vision characteristic. However, there is a challenge to quickly estimate the foveation point and accurately combine the foveation factor with the spatio-temporal JND model of DCT domain for FJND. In this paper, a new FJND model in DCT domain is proposed, which adaptively searches the foveation point by exploiting the property of image signature and builds a foveation model based on the contrast threshold. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposal model remarkably reduces the complexity of FJND in searching foveation. In a number of video coding experiments, we find that, in terms of coding efficiency, the proposed perceptual coding based on FJND for multiview video coding (MVC) significantly outperforms the existing algorithm.

Fabrication and optical properties of silicon nanopillar arrays with controllable surface structures

A fabrication method of controllable sizes and surface structures silicon nanopillar arrays was reported in this paper by the method of nanosphere lithography combining with dry etching. Silica monolayers were fabricated by using Langmuir-Blodgett assembly, which were used as masks. Silicon nanopillar arrays with the controllable sizes and surface structures were then fabricated by using deep reactive ion etching or inductively coupled plasma etching. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and optical reflectance spectra. The results show that the reflectivity of light was about 5% within the wavelength from 400 to 1000 nm. These Si nanopillar arrays were promising for future applications in photovoltaic.

Block sizes larger than the traditional 16×16 macroblock (MB) structure and extended macroblock (EMB) size motion estimation (ME) are introduced in joint model key technology areas software to improve the inter block coding efficiency. Similar to H.264, variable size motion estimation (VS-ME) is still adopted for each 16×16 MB including 16×16, 16×8, 8×16, 8×8, 8×4, 4×8, and 4×4. EMB size ME and VS-ME achieve the highest possible coding efficiency, but result in extremely large coding time which obstructs it from practical use. A fast mode decision algorithm for EMBs based on motion homogeneity is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of ME. The basic idea of the proposed method is to utilize the spatial property of motion field in prediction where EMB size ME and small size ME (including 8×8, 8×4, 4×8 and 4×4) are needed, and only in these regions EMB size ME and small size ME are enabled. The motion field is generated by the corresponding motion vectors in spatial window. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can save 55% average computational complexity, with negligible loss of coding efficiency. © 2012 SPIE and IS&T.
