The Pallet Grouping Problem (PGP) is defined as minimizing the number of pallets for placing all materials in a collection and distribution center. A key to solving the PGP is to tackle the Pallet Loading Problem (PLP). The Pallet Loading Problem aims to maximize the number of identical rectangular boxes placed within a rectangular pallet. All boxes have identical rectangular dimensions and, when placed, must be located completely within the pallet. In this paper, a novel pallet grouping technology is proposed and a new learning algorithm, namely Learning Only from Excellence, (LOE) is presented for solving the pallet loading problem. Simulation results show that compared with the conventional Genetic Algorithm (AG) for two pallet loading problems with different scales, the new learning algorithm is proved to be more efficiently. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Modeling of batch process based on higher order partial least squares

The products of batch processes are closely related to the daily life of modern people, and it is crucial for batch process monitoring to establish a model based on the normal process data sets. In this paper, according to the characteristics of batch process, a new generalized multilinear regression model, termed the higher order partial least squares (HOPLS), is introduced with the aim to better model the three-way batch data. It differs substantially from the traditional modeling approach, and instead of unfolding the three-way array to a two-way array, it explains the data by a sum of orthogonal Tucker tensors. Higher order orthogonal iteration (HOSVD), tensor transformation and higher order orthogonal iteration (HOOI) are used to find the latent vectors, which contain the maximum information of independent variables and dependent variables simultaneously. And the loading vectors are calculated at the same time. For the new observation values, the dependent variables will be predicted through the output of the model. Finally, the feasibility and efficiency of the method are verified through the PenSim2.0 simulation platform. © All Rights Reserved

Modeling of ethylene cracking furnace yields based on transfer learning

Ethylene cracker generally utilizes petroleum products as raw materials, and turn the long-chain hydrocarbon molecules into a variety of short chain hydrocarbons like gaseous hydrocarbons and a small amount of liquid hydrocarbons at high temperature, thereby obtaining ethylene, propylene and other products. Establishing the yield model for main products is of great significance to advanced control, operation optimization of the pyrolysis furnace in theory and practice. Due to the semi-continuous and periodic characteristics of cracking furnace, establishing a yield model for each condition is time-consuming. Considering the temperature, residence time and pressure have common effect on product yields, so this article uses these similarities exist in the new and old processes, supplemented with transfer learning to accomplish quick modeling for different conditions. Compared to previous studies, this method can be able to fully exploit the information contained in the historical data from a small amount of new data. Meanwhile, building a model of ethylene in the process of cracking furnace, case studies demonstrate the efficacy of the developed methodology. ©, 2014, chemical Industry Press. All right reserved.

This paper studies the consensus problem of general linear multi-agent systems via self-triggered control. Two distributed self-triggered control schemes based on state feedback and output feedback are developed respectively. It is shown that under the proposed control protocols, consensus can be reached if the communication graph of the multi-agent system is *** example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methods.

This paper studies global synchronization between a heterogeneous dynamical network and a known target trajectory via distributed impulsive control. Synchronization with an error level, called quasi-synchronization, is analyzed by utilizing the time-varying Lyapunov function. Some sufficient quasi-synchronization conditions are presented and explicit expressions of error levels are derived. Furthermore, the effects of the pinning control matrix and the coupling strength are explored. Unlike the continuous pinning feedback control, it is shown that a large coupling strength will destroy synchronization in the present of impulsive controller, which is also verified by our simulations. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper deals with the H ∞ filter design problem for event-triggered networked control systems (NCSs), where the next task release time and finishing time are predicted based on the sampled states. The closed-loop filtering error system is modeled as a linear system with an interval time-varying delay and event-triggered communication strategy. Based on this model, some novel criteria for the asymptotic stability analysis and H ∞ filter design of the event-triggered NCSs with time-varying delay are established to guarantee a prescribed H ∞ disturbance rejection attenuation level. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In a resource limited multi-agent system, it is of practical importance to select a fraction of nodes (agents) to provide control inputs such that consensus can be achieved with optimized performance in terms of network cost and/or convergence speed. In this paper, we investigate the problem of how to select control nodes so as to minimize the network cost, where the control nodes are selected at the beginning and will be fixed all the time. This problem can be transformed to a combinatorial optimization problem, and further relaxed to a convex optimization problem with reweighted l1 norm. We propose a suboptimal algorithm to solve the convex optimization problem. Finally, we offer several numerical examples to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed strategies, and investigate the relationship how the degrees of control nodes will influence network cost and convergence speed. © IFAC.

In this paper, a linear unbiased minimum-variance filtering problem is considered for a class of systems with randomly multi-step sensor delays. A new mathematical model is established for the multi-step sensor delays. Different from the augmented method for dealing with delayed systems, a linear unbiased minimum-variance filter design method is proposed without augmenting the state vector, which effectively reduces the filter dimensions. A recursive algorithm for calculating the filter gain matrix is developed. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2014 IEEE.

Hybrid route to produce acrylic acid from sugarcane molasses

This work presents the synthesis of acrylic acid by hybrid route from sugarcane molasses fermentation and later acid lactic dehydration. Lactic acid was produced by sugarcane molasses fermentation using the Lactobacillus plantarum CCT 5731 bacteria in bioreactor BioFlo 415 at 37 °C. After of 46.4 h of fermentation 50.6 g/L of lactic acid was obtained with productivity of 1.1 g/L.h which was subsequently concentred to 152 g/L and stored to dehydration stage. Both commercial lactic acid and lactic acid obtained through fermentation stage were dehydrated by catalysts supported on basic zeolite (NaY) in a tubular reactor at 300 °C and continuous flow of CO2 (30 mL/min). The largest selectivity (25.7 %) for acrylic acid was obtained when the commercial lactic acid and KBr/NaY were used. When lactic acid obtained by fermentation a maximum acrylic acid selectivity of 16.7 % was achieved using KI/NaY.
