Counterfactual universal quantum computation

Universal quantum computation is usually associated with interaction among two-level quantum subsystems, as this interaction is commonly viewed as a necessity to achieve universal quantum computation. In this work we show that, contrary to this intuition, universal quantum computation can be achieved without interaction among initially independent two-level quantum subsystems. We call it counterfactual universal quantum computation. As special cases, we show how to achieve counterfactual communication of quantum states, counterfactual quantum swapping, and counterfactual quantum erasure codes. To ease practical implementation, we analyze counterfactual universal quantum computation with realistic devices, including the effects of finite execution time, photon loss, and atom missing. Besides the theoretical interest of illustrating the mysterious and counterintuitive nature of quantum physics, our work has practical applications to color imaging of ancient arts, upon which light is forbidden to shine.

Kinetics of COx formation in the homogeneous metal/bromide-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of p-xylene

The homogeneous metal/bromide-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of p-xylene with different catalyst concentrations was carried out, and the formation kinetics of COx including CO2 and CO was measured. The simplified elementary steps for the formation of COx were summarized, on the basis of which the kinetic model of COx formation was established. The model calculations were in good agreement with the experimental data for the CO2 formation and also successfully captured the first peak of the CO formation rate as a function of time. The obtained rate constants have narrow confidence intervals, among which only k1 and k2 are the adjustable parameters for different catalyst conditions. The decarboxylation of the carboxyl group in aromatic acid, the oxidation of the aryl radical, and the destruction of acetic acid are the major sources of CO2. The formation of CO mainly results from the destruction of acetic acid and the oxidation of the aryl radical. Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper studies global synchronization between a heterogeneous dynamical network and a known target trajectory via distributed impulsive control. Synchronization with an error level, called quasi-synchronization, is analyzed by utilizing the time-varying Lyapunov function. Some sufficient quasi-synchronization conditions are presented and explicit expressions of error levels are derived. Furthermore, the effects of the pinning control matrix and the coupling strength are explored. Unlike the continuous pinning feedback control, it is shown that a large coupling strength will destroy synchronization in the present of impulsive controller, which is also verified by our simulations.

Discrete-phase-randomized measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution removes all detector-side attacks in quantum cryptography, and in the meantime doubles the secure distance. The source side, however, is still vulnerable to various attacks. In particular, the continuous phase randomization assumption on the source side is normally not fulfilled in experimental implementation and may potentially open a loophole. In this work, we first show that indeed there are loopholes for imperfect phase randomization in measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution by providing a concrete attack. Then we propose a discrete-phase-randomized measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol as a solution to close this source-side loophole.

Hybrid adaptive cuckoo algorithm based on local search strategy

To enhance the search accuracy and global convergence rate of Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm, a Hybrid Adaptive Cuckoo algorithm based on Local search strategy (LHACS) was proposed. In this algorithm, a local population was randomly generated around each current solution, the local optimal solution was obtained by sine cosine operator and the current solution was replaced by local optimal solution, which had improved the local search accuracy actually. The adaptive discovery probability and factor of search step were substituted for the fixed ones in CS to enhance the global convergence speed of the algorithm. The experiment of 25 classical high-dimensional benchmark functions showed that the LHACS was superior to CS in convergence rate and search accuracy, and it was applied to engineering optimization design and 0-1 knapsack problems, which verified the validity of the algorithm. © 2019, Editorial Department of CIMS. This paper is dealt with the rotor speed tracking problem of variable-speed wind turbine systems operating under the partial load condition. Singular perturbation techniques are used to characterize the two-time-scale property of the wind turbine system, and a linear parameter varying (LPV) model is formed to approximate nonlinear behaviours of a wind turbine system. Based on the slow-fast decomposition method, slow and fast subsystems are constructed: one for the mechanical dynamics and the other for the electrical dynamics. Slow and fast controls are derived, respectively, and then a local state feedback controller, sum of the slow and fast control, is formulated. A design procedure, using the linear parameter varying control to combine local controllers, is proposed to guarantee the robustness of the closed-loop nonlinear wind turbine system. Numerical examples are given to show the validity of the proposed control scheme. © 2020 IEEE.

In this paper, an automatic arithmetic generation system which can be remotely controlled by a particular speaker is designed and implemented to improve children's interest in learning math and facilitate parents to supervise children. The system is composed of the sender subsystem and the receiver subsystem. The sender subsystem is responsible to recognize speech and send the control command, and then the receiver subsystem can receive the command and execute corresponding program. The hardware system is made up of the SPCE061A microchip, keyboard, NRF2401 and LCD SPLC501 etc. The software system mainly achieves the following functions: recognition of speech, the control of NRF2401, random generation of arithmetic test samples, adjustment of different level, and supply of the correct answer. Finally, the system is experimented in some children. The result of experiment shows the system can greatly improve children's interest in learning math. ©2010 IEEE.

Based on the switching strategy, this paper presents an finite frequency formulation for the robust stabilization of singularly perturbed uncertain systems. An uncertain system is modeled as a parallel connection of a nominal system and an error system represented in the form of a linear parameter-varying system. A family of dynamic output feedback controllers are designed to enhance the robustness of the error system against finite frequency uncertainties over the operational region. A hysteresis switching is proposed to coordinate the candidate controllers. The proposed scheme is applied in the longitudinal control of an F16 aircraft to verify its effectiveness and merits.

This paper is concerned with leader-follower synchronization of complex dynamical networks with sampled-data control. By sampling the signal from the leader at some discrete time instants and using a zero-order hold function, synchronization is achieved between the network and a desired orbit, known as the leader. By applying Lyapunov functional approach and the property of the network topology matrix, a delay-dependent criterion is derived. It is shown that synchronization of N coupled dynamical systems with a leader can be recast into the stability of N decoupled systems, in which eigenvalues of the network topology matrix are involved. Finally, a chaotic neural network is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2012 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

In this paper, a novel second-order integral sliding mode control (SOSMC) algorithm is proposed to accomplish velocity control of the permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) so that the performance can be improved. An integral manifold is utilized to reduce the static error during the sliding mode movement phase to improve the control precision, and a new SOSMC law is achieved by a Lyapunov function approach so the system convergence is guaranteed. The presented method can not only eliminate the system chattering problem successfully but also improve the performance of the PMSM control system. Meanwhile, in order to solve the problem of the windup phenomenon of the PMSM control system, an anti-windup control method is proposed in the PMSM control system. The simulation experimental results are given to indicate that the proposed method is effective and can improve the performance of the PMSM control system such as fast response, high robustness and speed tracking precision, etc. © The Author(s) 2013..
