Measuring method for the vertex radius of curvature of an asphere with a laser tracker

Aspheric elements are widely applied in optical systems and the vertex radius of curvature （VROC） is one of the important fundamental parameters of an asphere. We present a method for measuring the VROC of asphere. We use a portable laser tracker to measure the optical interval of the null testing path and then determine the VROC of the asphere through ray tracing. Based on this method, we carry out an accurate measurenlent. The accuracy can reach up to 0.056 mm on an asphere with VROC of approximately 2 m and the relative error is 0.003%.

High-pressure abrasive water jet dressing of metal bonded diamond grinding wheel

To solve the problem that dressing of metal bonded diamond grinding wheels during the grinding process for a large aperture aspherical RB-SiC mirror, high pressure abrasive water jet dressing was investigated. The unused, worn and dressed grinding wheel topographies were observed and compared to analyze the wear and dressing mechanism. 3D surface roughness amplitude parameters of these topographies, which include Sp, Sq, Ssk, and Sku, were analyzed and comprehensive evaluated. The experiment results show that abrasive grains of the unused or the worn grinding wheel are increased and well protruded from binder after dressing, which will lead to a decrease of normal and tangential grinding force. The feed rate of nozzle have no significant effect on the 3D surface roughness of grinding wheel as the feed rate is between 0.5 to 16 m/min. The results verified the feasibility of high pressure abrasive water-jet in-process dressing of metal bond diamond grinding wheel. © 2016, Science Press. All right reserved.

A dual-band flexible frequency selective surface （FSS） with miniaturized elements and maximally flat （Butterworth） response is presented in this paper. It is composed of three metallic layers, which are fabricated on thin flexible polyimide substrates and bonded together using thin bonding films. The overall thickness of the proposed structure is only about 0.3 mm, making it an attractive choice for conformal FSS applications. All the three layers can constitute a miniaturized- element FSS （MEFSS） and produce the first pass-band with miniaturization property, while the up and bottom layers can constitute a symmetric biplanar FSS and produce the second pass-band with maximally fiat （Butterworth） response. The two pass-bands are independent and there is a wide band spacing up to 30 GHz between them. The principles of operation, the simulated results by using the vector modal matching method, and the experimental values of the fabricated prototype are also presented and discussed.

Floquet Topological Insulator in the BHZ Model with the Polarized optical Field

Topological phase of newly found matter has aroused wide interests, especially related with the external periodical modulating. With the help of the Floquet theory, we investigate the possibility of externally manipulating the topological property in a HgTe/CdTe quantum well system with the polarized optical field. We give the phase diagram, showing that by modulating the parameters of the polarized optical field, especially the phase, the topological phase transition can be realized in the QW and lead to the so-called Floquet topological insulator. When the optical field is weak, the driven QSH state of QW is robust with the optical field. However, when the optical field is relatively larger, the group velocity of edge states and the gap between the bulk states exhibit certain oscillations. The implications of our results are discussed.

Third-order aberration analysis of tilted-pupil optical systems

The aberration field of an optical system with a tilted pupil is explored through expanding the vector expressions of the third-order wavefront aberrations. First, the vector forms of the wavefront aberrations are modified to obtain the aberration expressions with the pupil tilted; full field displays of coma and astigmatism in this situation are given. Then, the third-order aberration formulas with the pupil decentered and tilted simultaneously are derived and discussed. Finally, an example is taken to certify the validity of aberration distribution properties.

Identification and thermodynamic mechanism of the phase transition in hafnium nitride films

A stoichiometry-driven phase transition from rocksalt to “nitrogen-rich” structure exists in group-IVB transition metal nitride films. As this phase transition is critical in controlling the film properties it has attracted numerous studies. However, researchers are still divided with regard to the structural identity of this “nitrogen-rich” phase, not to mention detailed exploration of the phase transition mechanisms. In this study, we confirmed that the “nitrogen-rich” phase in hafnium nitride (HfN x ) films had a cubic Th 3 P 4 structure of space group symmetry of I- 43 d (220), namely c -Hf 3 N 4 . The confirmation was obtained by combining the first-principle calculations with a series of experiments: Selected Area Electron Diffraction, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Raman, Gracing Incident X-ray Diffraction and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The mechanisms of the phase transition were elucidated through calculations on enthalpy of formation ( EOF ). The experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculations. We conclude that with increasing nitrogen, phase transition takes place from rocksalt ( δ -HfN) to c -Hf 3 N 4 through three stages of structural evolution: δ -HfN (containing Hf vacancies) → mixture of ( δ -HfN + c -Hf 3 N 4 ) → c -Hf 3 N 4 . The driving force of the phase transition is energy minimization. The three stages of structural evolution are explained by comparing the EOF of the δ -HfN and c -Hf 3 N 4 phases. As the phase transition takes place, the hafnium nitride film morphs from a conductive and opaque metal into an insulating and transparent semiconductor.

In this paper, the performance comparison between glass ceramics (Zerodur) and silicon carbide (SiC) which are two kinds of common materials used for space optical reflector is carried out, and several lightweight structure forms are analyzed. The oval plane reflector is applied in ultra-low temperature environment of space, take this kind of reflector as an example, its lightweight structure is optimized by CAD, then through finite element analysis, deformation of the planar lightweight mirror is 0.014λ (rms) in gravity condition, and deformation is 0.002λ (rms) in ultra-low temperature of-150 degrees environment. The actual lightweight processing is controled by the CNC system in a graphical way, and using chemical method to eliminate the stress and micro crack generated during processing, its final surface shape precision reaches 0.022λ (rms). Finally, this paper introduces the manufacture method of novel silicon carbide (SiC), and analyzes the current situation and development trends of the spatial lightweight reflector manufacturing technology. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Experimental study of fabricating SiC mirror in full aperture with optimized fixed abrasive polishing pad

The removal function test is carried out on the earlier round-pellet polishing pad. The concept of filling factor is introduced to evaluate the removal function obtained from the experiments mentioned in the paper. To improve the filling factor and characteristics of the polishing pad, the pad structure is optimized according to the experimental results of the round-pellet pad. The removal function of the new polishing pad is simulated with MATLAB. The stability experiment is carried out in full aperture at the same time. The fixed abrasive and the slurry abrasive polishing experiment both are performed under the same conditions. Finally, the structural similarity index is introduced to evaluate the similarity between simulations and experiments. The best structural similaritv index of multi-square-mellet oad is 0.4257. The comparison results are acceptable and Positive. The optimized fixed abrasive polishing pad is proved to be highly promising for large-diameter SiC mirror fabrication.

Due to the special properties of asphere lens, the testing of it is more difficult than that of spherical lens. In this paper, the development of a new method using the liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) to measure the accuracy of an aspheric surface is presented. The surface form was measured using a new component as the compensator lens in conjunction to provide an interferogram representing the aspheric form deviation from the nominal. Interferograms are decoded using a spatial-carrier phase-shifting technique. The interferometric data is compared to data obtained using a contact stylus profilometer. The system can be mounted over a polishing machine and used for on-line testing of aspheric mirror surfaces. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
