Escalating variability of daily sea temperature decreases phytoplankton spring blooms

Increases in sea surface temperature (SST) and its variability (SSTV) in the context of climate change have a great impact on marine phytoplankton productivity, but their combined effects on phytoplankton biomass, especially at a daily scale, have been poorly assessed. Here, we used an extended autoregressive (EAR) model to assess the different roles of SST and SSTV on phytoplankton spring blooms (PSB) in the Yellow Sea, based on 25 years (1998–2022) of daily-scale high-resolution chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) data from satellites. The annual patterns of PSB indices (start, peak, and duration) clearly exhibited years which were weak (low peak: Chl-a <0.80 mg/m³;short duration: <15 days) and strong (high peak: Chl-a >1.0 mg/m³;long duration: >60 days). The EAR model detected the significant effects of SST and SSTV on PSB indices, with SSTV being the more important determinant. SST is highly related to the timing of PSB start and end, with the average SST of 9.5 ± 0.7 °C at the start and 13.2 ± 1.95 °C at the end. The amplitude of SSTV was negatively correlated with the daily increase in Chl-a, highlighting the role of SSTV in modulating the magnitude of PSB. At low SST, the deepening of the mixed layer prolonged the time for phytoplankton to equilibrate nutrient and light requirements, whereas at low SSTV, the rate of environmental change within the mixed layer was reduced, allowing phytoplankton to adapt to the environment more quickly. Since the accumulation of phytoplankton biomass depends largely on daily acclimated growth, our results suggest that increasing daily temperature anomalies and warming in future are detrimental to phytoplankton biomass accumulation, and may reduce the magnitude of PSB in mid-to high-latitude seas. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Constrained Multi-objective Optimization Based on Dynamic Priority and Cooperative Offspring Generation

As the number and complexity of constraints in constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs) increase, the performance of existing constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (CmoeAs) declines significantly. A novel idea is to sequentially address each constraint based on priority, effectively reducing the complexity of CMOPs. However, in these algorithms, the constraint-handling priority is determined statically in the initial stage. This may lead to inappropriate determination of constraint-handling priority since accurately estimating the constraint landscape in the initial stage is quite challenging. Moreover, these algorithms tackle constraints separately, neglecting the potential for inter-constraint cooperation and thus compromising their efficiency in constraint handling. Thus, we propose a constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on dynamic priority and cooperative offspring generation called DPCmoeA. Firstly, the constraint-handling priority is determined dynamically by the estimated inconsistency degree (EID) between the Pareto fronts of the candidate constraints and the current population. Secondly, computational resources are automatically allocated to each constraint according to EID based constraint relationship analysis. Finally, a new offspring generation strategy based on constraint cooperation is designed to enhance the quality of new solutions. Experimental results on six CMOP test suites demonstrate that DPCmoeA outperforms six state-of-the-art algorithms. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

In this paper,we analyze the relationship between the equilibrium reinsurance strategy and the tail of the distribution of the *** Mean Residual Life(MRL)has a close relationship with the tail of the distribution,we consider two classes of risk distributions,Decreasing Mean Residual Life(DMRL)and Increasing Mean Residual Life(IMRL)distributions,which can be used to classify light-tailed and heavy-tailed distributions,*** assume that the underlying risk process is modelled by the classical CramérLundberg model *** the mean-variance criterion,by solving the extended Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation,we derive the equilibrium reinsurance strategy for the insurer and the reinsurer under DMRL and IMRL,***,we analyze how to choose the reinsurance premium to make the insurer and the reinsurer agree with the same reinsurance *** find that under the case of DMRL,if the distribution and the risk aversions satisfy certain conditions,the insurer and the reinsurer can adopt a reinsurance premium to agree on a reinsurance strategy,and under the case of IMRL,the insurer and the reinsurer can only agree with each other that the insurer do not purchase the reinsurance.

Functional Multiple-Outcome Model in application to Multivariate Growth Curves of Infant data

Motivated by a medical study that attempts to analyze the relationship between growth curves and other variables and to measure the association among multiple growth curves,the authors develop a functional multiple-outcome model to decompose the total variation of multiple functional outcomes into variation explained by independent variables with time-varying coefficient functions,by latent factors and by *** latent factors are the hidden common factors that influence the multiple outcomes and are found through the combined functional principal component analysis *** the coefficients of the latent factors one may further explore the association of the multiple *** method is applied to the multivariate growth data of infants in a real medical study in Shanghai and produces interpretable *** rates for the proposed estimates of the varying coefficient and covariance functions of the model are derived under mild conditions.

The authors propose a two-step test for the two-sample problem of processes of OrnsteinUhlenbeck type. In the first step, the authors test the equality of correlation structures, based on the least square estimators of the correlation parameters, and the test statistic follows the standard normal distribution. If the null hypothesis is not rejected in the first step, the authors consider a second step to test the equality of marginal distributions, based on the weighted deviation of the empirical characteristic functions;the test statistic has a complicated asymptotic distribution, so that sequential bootstrap method is applied to reach a temporary decision. Simulation studies and real data analysis suggest that the proposed approach performs well in finite samples.

Simultaneous optimal control of directional missed discovery rates in data stream diagnosis

High-dimensional data streams are ubiquitous in modern manufacturing, due to their ability to provide valuable information about the industrial system’s performance on a real-time basis. If a shift occurs in a production process, fault diagnosis based on the data streams is of critical importance for identifying the root cause. Existing methods have largely focused on controlling the total missed discovery rate without distinguishing missed signals for positive versus negative components of the shift vector. In practice, however, losses incurred from the two directional shifts can differ substantially, so it is desirable to constrain the proportions of missed signals for positive and negative components at two distinctive levels. In this article, we propose a fault classification procedure that controls the two proportions separately. By formulating the problem as Lagrangian multiplier optimization, we show that the proposed procedure is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the expected number of false discoveries. We also suggest an iterative adjustment algorithm that converges to the optimal Lagrangian parameters. The asymptotic optimality for the data-driven version of our procedure is also established. Theoretical justification and numerical comparison with state-of-the-art methods show that the proposed procedure works well in applications.
