Impact of phase masks' stitching errors on the reflectivity of the chirped fiber Bragg grating

The chirped electron-beam written phase mask is fabricated by using step-chirped method. The step-chirped phase mask is a useful and powerful device for realizing a nonlinearly or linearly stepwise chirped fiber grating with a broad bandwidth. But the stitching errors of electron-beam written phase masks always occur between neighboring sections, which can impact the reflectivity fluctuation of chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs). The 140-mm-length chirped FBGs, which are written by using 1 mm-stepwise chirped phase mask, are studied by simulation and experiment. The simulation results agree well with those of the experiment.

In this paper, the time domain circuit finite difference method is studied. This method can be used to analyze the transient transmission characteristics of the equivalent circuit constructed by the distributed circuit parameters, which are extracted from the non-uniform transmission lines. The stability of the method is studied. The method is then used to analyze the reflected and transmitted pulse waveforms of the equivalent circuit. By comparing the waveforms obtained by this method with those obtained by FDTD, the applicability of this method can be studied.

Time-domain electric field integral equation method is used to obtain the transient current distribution and the far field of V-shaped dipole antenna array in this paper. The time-domain characteristics and the beam steering capability of V-shaped dipole antenna array are studied under new definitions based on energy for time-domain radiation. The beam can be steered into a given direction by properly controlling the time delay of the driving pulses fed to each element.

Effect of the Array Edges on the Overall Scattering Property of Planar Dipole Array with Reflector

In order to study the effect of the array edges on the overall scattering property of finite planar dipole array with reflector, the total induced current on the array is decomposed into the infinite array current component and the residual current component. The total current and the infinite array current component are obtained by the Finite Difference Time Domain method using the Perfect Matched Layer absorbing boundary condition and the periodic boundary condition respectively, while the residual current components both on the dipoles and reflector are obtained by extracting the infinite array current component from the total current. Hence, the scattering cross section due to the residual current component can be obtained individually, and the effect of this part on the overall scattering cross section can be studied. It is shown that for a well designed array, the back scattering cross section generated by the infinite array current component can be very small due to the cancellation of the reflections from the dipoles and the reflector. However, back scattering cross section generated by the residual current components can be significant due to the occurring of the large singular current on the reflector edges. Therefore, the total back scattering may mainly come from the residual current component.

The dispersion of 8×10Gb/s wavelength division multiplex (WDM) system has been compensated by the cascaded chirped fiber Bragg gratings(CFBGs), with ITU-T standard wavelengths and wavelength grid. The ASE of the EDFA could be reduced, the OSNR of the transmitted signal could be increased and the fluctuation of the EDFA gain could be controlled in the certain scope by the dispersion compensated CFBGs' WDM system. Impact of cascaded CFBGs' delay ripple on dispersion compensation has been analyzed. Experiment of error-free 8×10Gb/s 2015km transmission without forward error correction (FEC) and electronic repeaters were demonstrated. In the transmission, simplex CFBGs compensators were used and no other form of dispersion compensators were adopted. The experiment result showed that the consistency of the dispersion compensating in each channel is perfect over 2015km optical fiber transmission. The experiment result does agree with the theoretic analysis.

The micro oscillation phenomenon of bent microstrip line is investigated in this paper by FDTD method and FFT. The micro oscillation phenomenon actually is due the small discontinuity in the bent region. In this paper, a Gaussian pulse is excited into the bent microstrip line, and the oscillation phenomenon is then studied by analyzing the waveform of reflected pulse of the bend and the corresponding frequency spectrum. The relationship between the oscillation and the structure parameters of the bent microstrip line is given.

Influence of temperature on the optical properties of near-rectangle core photonic crystal fiber

Considering the variations of the refractive index and hole pitch with the temperature synchronously, the influences of temperature on the optical properties of near-rectangle core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), especially on the polarization and dispersion, are analyzed with a full vector model based on super-lattice. Numerical results demonstrate that the variation of polarization and dispersion is quite little even if large variation in temperature occurs. This means that the near-rectangle core PCF has good temperature stability.

Novel way to measure the temperature characteristic of polarization-maintaining fiber

Polarization-maintaining fibers (PMF) are widely used in coherent optical communication systems, optical fiber sensors, optical fiber lasers, optical fiber gyros, and so on. The temperature stability is one of the key factors for the application of such fiber. In this paper, the characteristics of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fabricated in the PMF are analyzed by both of the theory and experiments. The results show that the higher of the temperature, the narrower of the polarization peak space. This is the theory basis of the high resolution new method to get the temperature characteristic of PMF. The experiments for the PMF at temperature range from -40°C to 130°C are measured, and the results agree well with the theory analysis.
