An ultra wideband wide-angle scanning phased array antenna is designed. It is a banyan tree antenna, of which the radiation curved arm is obtained by stretching a closed envelope which is compose of three exponential curves and a straight *** gradually changing exponential curve envelope of the radiating curved arm greatly expands the impedance bandwidth. Simulated results show that in the frequency band of 30 MHz ∼ 100 MHz, the active voltage standing wave ratio (AVSWR) scanned from 0° to 60° in azimuth plane and from 0° to 30° in elevation plane are all less than 2.5. The simulated 10 × 6 array antennas have excellent ultra wideband wide-angle scanning characteristics. © 2024 IEEE.

Mapping, monitoring and parameter inversion in the mountain areas covered with dense vegetation as well as cloud and mist is always a complicated subject. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an effective sensor of great potential to solve this problem. In this paper, a high resolution P-band airborne SAR system is developed, which is the first quantitative airborne P-band SAR system for business operation in China. The inherent signal ambiguity phenomenon for wide beam radar system is discussed, and the solution is suggested and validated with this radar system. Then a flight campaign is launched with this P-band SAR system in the Southwest China. The defocusing introduced by the dramatic terrain undulations is analysed detailedly. By co-registering the external digital elevation model (DEM) to the SAR image and motion compensation, the refocused quality of the polarimetric SAR images satisfies the user's requirement. After polarimetric and radiometric calibration, the polarized composite and geocoded image products are obtained for further studies. With this P-band airborne SAR system, the repeat-pass interferometric data are expected to be collected in the future for the vegetated mountainous area, and it will play more important role in the fields of topographic mapping and deformation monitoring. © 2024 COPYRIGHT SPIE. When the high-speed maneuvering-platform synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is used for long-range imaging, the antenna elevation beam covers a large range of ground echoes, leading to a small PRF upper limit, while the large azimuth signal Doppler bandwidth caused by the high-speed motion of the platform results in a large PRF lower limit. This situation may cause the lower limit of the PRF to exceed the upper limit, making PRF design impossible. To tackle this problem, an improved design method of the PRF lower limit is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed method for high-speed maneuvering SAR imaging can effectively extend the range of PRF selection and better meet the need of practical engineering applications. © 2024 IEEE.

A modified altitude estimation method for airborne SAR is proposed in this paper by multi-channel Doppler spectrum sharpening, to enhance both the along-track measurement resolution and the estimation robustness. A certain along-track measurement resolution is realized by Doppler sharpening, and the robustness of the estimation is improved by multi-channel clutter spectrum averaging. Simulation results show that this method has both good measurement resolution and robust estimation accuracy of the relative altitude for airborne SAR radar with both forward-looking view and down-looking view illuminations. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2023.

Tomographic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has great application potential in forestry, ice and snow detecting, and urban modelling for its ability to extract vertical structure information of the target and reconstruct the illuminated area. To fulfil the requirement from forestry users, a P-band tomographic SAR campaign was carried out in Zhaoqin, Guangdong Province in 2022, by the No.38 Research Institute, China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC38). In this paper, the P-band SAR system is introduced briefly, and the flight design is presented. The airborne SAR imaging algorithm for this tomographic campaign is described. Particularly, the phase errors caused by topography are compensated by introducing the digital elevation model (DEM) from shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM). To evaluate the phase accuracy for the tomographic SAR images, two of them are co-registered and generate interferogram and coherence maps. It is illustrated that the coherence is improved greatly after topography-dependent motion compensation. In the conclusion, further work is expected. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2023.

In this paper, a measurement system that can measure the average permittivity of planar materials is introduced. It consists of two horn antennas placed on both sides of the object. The working frequency of the system is 28GHz, and there is direct contact between the object and the sensor during measurement. The transmission coefficient of the sensor pair is measured, and the data is then converted into the time domain, and the permittivity is estimated using the time delay. The system was tested using dielectric plates with known different dielectric properties, and the dielectric constant was accurately estimated, and the measured system was built to realize the dielectric constant estimation of unknown objects. The antennas can be replaced with multiple antenna arrays with switching matrices to improve the accuracy of dielectric constant estimation. © 2024 IEEE.

The new generation of aperture array radio telescopes need to process analogue signals from thousands of antennas, including channelization, correlation, and digital beamforming. The huge amount of raw data poses a great challenge to the processing capability of digital processing system. For 400 MHz bandwidth observation signal fed by 1024 antennas, the digital system should be able to process and exchange a real-time data stream of 3.88 Tbps. A 1024-channel digital subsystem prototype developed, which uses Field Programmable Gate array (FPGA) transceivers to implement direct, passive, high-speed serial connections between 16 Chinese Tile Processing Modules (CTPM) in one sub-rack and between different sub-racks, standard 10 Gbit/s Ethernet links are used to transfer data to Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) nodes. The digital sub-system can be flexibly customized and expanded to enable different configurations for 16~1024 and 1024*N analogue inputs. Preliminary experimental results such as channel response and channel correction showed that the prototype system has good channel-to-channel consistency and stability, which is suitable for large-scale aperture array applications. © 2023 IEEE.

In order to carry out non-destructive testing on the defects of basin insulator, a detection scheme using pulsed UWB radar is proposed. The UWB system has the advantages of high transmission rate, low power consumption, strong penetration and strong anti-interference ability, and has been widely used in military, radar, medical research and other scenarios. In this paper, the radar device and the radar motion model are introduced firstly. Secondly, a moving platform is built according to the testing requirements of the basin insulator. Finally, the test data are collected and analyzed by using the motion platform. The test results show that this method can be used for non-contact and non-destructive testing of the basin insulator. © 2024 IEEE.

In ISAR imaging of chirp-subpulse stepped frequency radar, a key step is estimating the velocity, which is the determinant of wideband synthesis. In this paper, a method of two steps is proposed, that is more robust for interferences in practices. Firstly, the coarse estimation is obtained based on the fact that the profiles of target from same frequency are similar. Meanwhile, for eliminating the disturbance from jam, some estimations from different frequencies are comprehended. After correcting migration through resolution cell based on the prior estimation, some stronger cells are selected and the high resolution range profiles of each cells are achieved through IFFT(Inverse Fast Fourier Transformation). And based on these, the more precise velocity is estimated. Finally, the validity and the robustness of the method are validated through the practical radar dataset. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2023.

The MLVDS interface can support up to 500Mbps data rate and a wide common mode voltage range, and has strong ESD protection characteristics, supporting hot swapping function. MLVDS solves electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems by controlling the voltage swing rate and output amplitude of output data. In addition, MLVDS also retains LVDS low-voltage differential signal characteristics, which can further reduce electromagnetic interference and drive multiple transceivers to achieve interconnection applications, Featuring high transmission rate, low power consumption, and low noise. The main control system of the Ka simulated phased array antenna wave control system controls multiple sub wave control components through the MLVDS bus. The MLVDS bus between the main control and sub wave control adopts a one-to-eight structure, and the MLVDS transmission rate is required to be 50Mbps, with reliable and stable transmission. From the perspective of reliability and derating design, the MLVDS bus of the system is required to transmit stably at a transmission rate of 100Mbps. Based on this, establish a testing platform to verify the reliable transmission of MLVDS one to eight bus at a transmission rate of 100Mbps. © 2024 SPIE.
