Acoustic cameras have found many applications in practice. Accurate and reliable extrinsic calibration of the microphone array and visual sensors within acoustic cameras is crucial for fusing visual and auditory measurements. Existing calibration methods either require prior knowledge of the microphone array geometry or rely on grid search which suffers from slow iteration speed or poor convergence. To overcome these limitations, in this paper, we propose an automatic calibration technique using a calibration board with both visual and acoustic markers to identify each microphone position in the camera frame. We formulate the extrinsic calibration problem (between microphones and the visual sensor) as a nonlinear least squares problem and employ a batch optimization strategy to solve the associated problem. Extensive numerical simulations and real-world experiments show that the proposed method improves both the accuracy and robustness of extrinsic parameter calibration for acoustic cameras, in comparison to existing methods. Accurate calibration of acoustic sensing systems made of multiple asynchronous microphone arrays is essential for satisfactory performance in sound sour ce localization and tracking. State-of-the-art calibration methods for this type of system rely on the time difference of arrival and direction of arrival measurements among the microphone arrays (denoted as TDOA-M and DOA, respectively). In this paper, to enhance calibration accuracy, we propose to incorporate the time difference of arrival measurements between adjacent sound events (TDOA-S) with respect to the microphone arrays. More specifically, we propose a two-stage calibration approach, including an initial value estimation (IVE) procedure and the final joint optimization step. The IVE stage first initializes all parameters except for microphone array orientations, using hybrid TDOA (i.e., TDOA-M and TDOA-S), odometer data from a moving robot carrying a speaker, and DOA. Subsequently, microphone orientations are estimated through the iterative closest point method. The final joint optimization step estimates multiple microphone array locations, orientations, time offsets, clock drift rates, and sound source locations simultaneously. Both simulation and experiment results show that for scenarios with low or moderate TDOA noise levels, our approach outperforms existing methods in terms of accuracy. Cooperative Differential Game Guidance Laws for Target with Multiple Defenders against Missile

Cooperative guidance laws for a target aircraft with multiple defenders against an attacking missile are investigated. The engagement is described as a nonzero-sum differential game. Terminal angle difference constraints are added to the differential game problem to avoid the potential collision problem of the defenders. A class of cost functions segmented by relative distances between the players are presented, which can better reflect the objectives of the players. In the design, a systematic switching method between norm-bounded and linear quadratic differential game guidance laws is proposed based on the expected miss distances. The equilibrium solutions are obtained, which can reflect the extreme guidance performance of the respective players. Simulations verify the effectiveness of the design. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

In this work, we introduce an innovative approach to single-molecule quantum coherence (SMQC)-based disposable micro-optical anti-counterfeiting labels. This method facilitates the editing and reading of anti-counterfeiting with single molecules used as the anti-counterfeiting information labels. The label is meticulously crafted through inkjet printing technology, while its authentication is achieved via frequency domain imaging. Through a validation process including experimental demonstration, numerical simulation, and neural network analysis, we demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, further validate the integrity of the miniature anti-counterfeiting information storage, and verify the signal extraction accuracy with the recognition accuracy of the labels is consistently above 99.995%. The combination of SMQC-based disposable micro-optical anti-counterfeiting technology is expected to enable more precise preparation of single-molecule-array chips, thus providing a crucial foundation for the advancement of high-tech and intelligent manufacturing industries. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

Robust Consensus Based Secondary control for Microgrids Considering Communication Delay and Noises: A Kalman Filter Based Approach

To achieve the frequency and voltage regulation as well as active and reactive power sharing, the consensus-based secondary controls of microgrids rely on communication network to exchange signals between neighbor inverters, which may be affected by the communication delay and noises. Unlike the existing methods that focus solely on communication delay, this paper proposes a Kalman filter-based robust consensus control to address the communication delay and noises comprehensively. Based on the discrete differential equation of the signal transmitted via communication network, the multi-step prediction model of the delayed signal is firstly built by considering the prediction errors. The state space model is then constructed by taking the predicted signals at each step as the state variables while the delayed and noise-involved signal and its differential value are seen as the measurements. A Kalman filter is further designed to comprehensively handle the communication delay, noises and prediction errors to estimate the true signal generated from neighbor inverters. With the estimated signals of all neighbor inverters, the consensus control is performed to coordinate the grid-following and grid-forming inverters within the microgrid. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated with simulations and experiments performed on the modified IEEE-33 bus-based microgrid. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Pure magnesium is a very promising material in the fields of biomedical and engineering. Obtaining pure magnesium with superior mechanical properties has consistently been a significant challenge in the area of materials science. This study focuses on investigating the processing method and strengthening mechanism of pure magnesium by ultra-precision cutting. The research results show that the pure magnesium grains were significantly refined after ultra-precision cutting. The average grain size reduced from ∼24 µm to nanometers, and the average nano-hardness increased from 1.02 GPa to 2.82 GPa. Amorphous pure magnesium structure and body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice pure magnesium were reported. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation confirmed that the high shear strain and hydrostatic pressure during ultra-precision cutting was the origin of amorphization and lattice transformation. The amorphous phase and a significant number of long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) phases inside the pure magnesium were responsible for the high hardness after ultra-precision cutting. © 2025

sEMG (surface electromyography) signal control of bionic prostheses has been widely studied over the past few years. In particular, sparse sEMG signals are rapidly developing in the field of gesture recognition for their convenience, noninvasiveness, and ease of access. However, compared with high-density EMG signals, sparse EMG signals lack rich feature information, which in turn affects gesture recognition accuracy. In order to reduce the loss of feature information of sparse EMG signals in the spatio-temporal dimension, this paper proposes a hybrid neural network Res-LSTM combining residual network and long short-term memory network. The ordinary convolutional blocks in the CNN network are replaced with residual blocks, and the final fully connected layer is removed and a constant mapping layer is added to adequate extraction of spatial feature information of the data. The Res layer’s output is utilized as the input for the long and short-term memory (LSTM) network, which further extracts the features of the data in the temporal dimension, and finally completes the categorization output through a fully connected layer. The average accuracy of 91.11% for gesture-motion classification was verified by training on a homebrew dataset;and tested on a public dataset, NinaPro DB1, with an average accuracy of 91.03%. The experimental findings indicate that the proposed Res-LSTM network framework contributes to solving the problem of lack of feature information of sparse sEMG signals and improves the pattern recognition accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Taking underwater robots project as an example, this paper discusses the innovation of the teaching mode of engineering drawing courses under the guidance of a project. The traditional engineering drawing course often lacks the link of practice and project application, which leads to the lack of students’ understanding and application ability of the course content. Therefore, this study proposes a teaching mode based on project guidance. By using underwater robots as teaching cases, theoretical knowledge and practical application are combined to promote the cultivation of students’ comprehensive abilities. This paper first reviews the research progress in related fields, then introduces the design and implementation methods of the teaching mode in detail, and analyzes the actual effect of the model through the underwater robot case. The results show that the teaching mode of engineering drawing courses under the guidance of the project has a positive impact on students’ learning interest, practical ability and teamwork ability. The results of this study will provide practical and feasible solutions for the innovation of the teaching mode of engineering drawing courses, and also provide a reference for the reform of undergraduate teaching mode in the construction of "New Engineering Education". © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Electric Vehicle Routing Problem with Capacitated Charging Stations and Dynamic Electricity Prices

With rapid electrification of transportation systems in recent years, the electric vehicle routing problem (EVRP) has received increasing attention. In order to serve a set of valuable transportation tasks using a fleet of electric vehicles, EVRP intends to jointly determine their routes and the charging schedules, with the aim of optimizing service reward and charging cost under state of charge (SOC) constraints of battery. EVRP is a difficult nonlinear integer program, and due to its intrinsic NP-hardness early EVRP studies often oversimplify the charging process and assume unlimited capacity of charging stations and constant electricity price. The contribution of this paper lies in twofold. First, to better characterize the practical charging process, this paper introduces a new graph model that can take the charging station capacity and dynamic electricity price into full consideration. Second, we design a series of transformation techniques, including reformulation SOC dynamics, Lagrangian relaxation, exact linear programming relaxation, etc, which eventually convert the original EVRP into an approximate linear program. Extensive simulations across 14 instances demonstrate that, the proposed approach is capable of solving large-scale instances over 500 nodes, and is 100 times faster than traditional analytic methods while achieving very close optimality. While comparing with the popular heuristic method ALNS (Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search), our method is several times faster and obtains much better optimality. © 2014 IEEE.
