Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)have attracted significant interest as self-templates and precursors for the synthesis of carbon-based composites aimed at electromagnetic wave(EMW)***,the utilization of high-temperature treatments has introduced uncertainties regarding the compositions and microstructures of resulting ***,complete carbonization has led to diminished yields of the produced carbon composites,significantly limiting their practical ***,the exploration of pristine MOF-based EMW absorbers presents an intriguing yet challenging endeavor,primarily due to inherently low electrical *** this study,we showcase the utilization of struc-turally robust Zr-MOFs as scaffolds to build highly conductive Zr-MOF/PPy composites via an inner-outer dual-modification approach,which involves the production of conducting polypyrrole(PPy)both within the confined nanoporous channels and the external surface of Zr-MOFs via post-synthetic *** interconnection of confined PPy and surface-lined PPy together leads to a consecutive and extensive conducting network to the maximum *** therefore entails outstanding conductivity up to～14.3 S cm-1 in Zr-MOF/PPy composites,which is approximately 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that for conductive MOF nanocomposites constructed from either inner or outer *** from the strong and tunable conduction loss,as well as the induced dielectric polarization originated from the porous structures and MOF-polymer interfaces,Zr-MOF/PPy exhibits excellent microwave attenuation capabilities and a tunable absorption frequency ***,with only 15 wt.％loading,the mini-mum reflection loss(RLmin)can reach up to-67.4 dB,accompanied by an effective absorption bandwidth(EAB)extending to 6.74 ***,the microwave absorption characteristics can be tailored from the C-band to the Ku-band by adjusting the loading of *** work provide

Formative manufacturing of heterogeneous composite plates: a review

The integration of superior characteristics from individual components achievable in heterogeneous composite plates can be achieved through optimal material configuration and combination methods. This approach results in significant enhancements in physical, mechanical, and forming properties when compared to traditional single metal plates. However, challenges such as prolonged manufacturing cycles and the complexity of coordinating interface characteristics and microstructural properties impede the rapid advancement and widespread adoption of heterogeneous composite plate manufacturing. This study offers a comprehensive overview of the primary forming methods for heterogeneous composite plates, including rolling, extrusion, welding, hot pressing, and additive manufacturing. It addresses current challenges and anticipates potential developmental directions, such as the application of specialized energy field-assisted forming techniques and the design of heterogeneous microstructures. The exploration of new resources, the expansion of innovative concepts, the establishment of novel models, the promotion of new principles, and the adoption of transformative technologies are essential for the breakthrough development of heterogeneous composite plate manufacturing. Aligning with the national innovation-driven development strategy and the requirements of major national projects remains a fundamental objective of this research direction. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

One-step direct ammonia synthesis by pulse-modulated microwave plasma at atmospheric pressure

In this study,we explored a one-step direct synthesis of NH3 under mild experimental conditions utilizing pulse-modulated microwave plasma technology at atmospheric *** a substantial gas flow rate,a microwave plasma jet was formed and the microwave-assisted ammonia synthesis can be *** of various parameters including the gas flow rate,gas component,microwave absorbed power,pulse modulation frequency,and pulse duty cycle on ammonia synthesis were systematically *** indicate the reaction path of ammonia synthesis,the distributions of both the gas temperature and active species were also studied using optical emission spectra *** is found that a considerable amount of ammonia was directly synthesized without involvement of any catalysts,the highest ammonia production rate and energy efficiency(EE),up to 2.93μmol·min^(-1) and 6.64×10^(-2)g·(k W·h)^(-1),respectively,were achieved under low microwave power of 84.42 *** duty cycle has obvious influences on the synthesis efficiency,compared to a duty cycle of 80%,the ammonia synthesis rate,EE and nitrogen conversion decreased by about 22%at a duty cycle of 100%.This finding underscores the significance of incorporating pulse modulation in the microwave discharge process for ammonia ***,it was found that vibrational excitation of microwave plasma has a significant driving effect on ammonia synthesis.

Chemical units of binary solid-solution alloys directly derived from short-range-order parameters

Short-range ordering is a typical structural characteristic of solid solutions. According to our cluster-plus-glue-atom model, the chemical unit of a solid solution covers a nearest-neighbor cluster and a few next-nearest-neighbor glue atoms, [cluster](glue atoms). However, the determination of the number of atoms located in these two shells requires complex calculations. The present work provides a simple method to obtain the chemical unit in a direct manner using Cowley's short-range-order parameters α1 and α2, by graphically illustrating the relationship between the total number of glue atoms and the ratio of atomic radii. For example, according to this graphical illustration, the Cu68.9Zn31.1 alloy should have four glue atoms. Using its measured α1 = -0.137 and α2 = 0.149, a new form of chemical unit is obtained, [Zn-Cu9.40Zn2.60]-Zn1.65Cu2.35, which is further simplified into integer forms of [Zn-Cu10Zn2]-Zn3Cu1 = Cu11Zn6 or [Zn-Cu9Zn3]Zn1Cu3 = Cu12Zn5, explaining the cartridge brasses C27000 (65Cu-35Zn) and C26000 (70Cu-30Zn), respectively. This provides a new way of understanding the composition of industrial alloys from their atomic origins and offers a new alloy design strategy. © Li, Dong, Wang and Dong 2025.

Effect of alumina fibers on microstructure and mechanical properties of composite enamel coatings

Glass enamel coatings are widely used to protect metal against corrosion and weathering due to their exceptional chemical stability. However, the application potential of enamel coatings will be further enhanced if their mechanical properties, particularly impact resistance and toughness, can be improved. In this study, we investigated the influence of varying amounts of alumina fibers on the microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical properties of enamel coatings by fabricating composite enamel coatings. The impact strength, hardness and modulus of the resulting materials were evaluated by falling ball impact tests and nanoindentation tests. The results showed that the alumina fibers were well bonded to the enamel matrix, and the coating surface roughness and contact angle increased with fiber addition. The coating had the lowest porosity and best impact resistance at 0.5 wt% fiber addition. At this point, the modulus and hardness of the composite enamel coating demonstrated improved stability, with the overall hardness reaching its maximum value, and excessive addition of alumina fibers can lead to a reduction in coating performance. As a result, the alumina fibers appear feasible to use as reinforcing material to produce high performance composite enamel coatings. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Grain morphology and plasticizing mechanism of AZ31 magnesium alloy curved profiles by staggered extrusion

Traditional manufacturing processes for lightweight curved profiles are often associated with lengthy procedures,high costs,low efficiency,and high energy *** order to solve this problem,a new staggered extrusion(SE)process was used to form the curved profile of AZ31 magnesium alloy in this *** study investigates the mapping relationship between the curvature,microstructure,and mechanical properties of the formed profiles by using different eccentricities of the *** electron microscopy(SEM)and electron backscatter diffraction techniques are employed to examine the effects of different eccentricity values(e)on grain morphology,recrystallization mechanisms,texture,and Schmid factors of the *** results demonstrate that the staggered extrusion method promotes the deep refinement of grain size in the extruded products,with an average grain size of only 15%of the original billet,reaching 12.28μ*** tensile strength and elongation of the curved profiles after extrusion under the eccentricity value of 10 mm,20 mm and 30 mm are significantly higher than those of the billet,with the tensile strength is increased to 250,270,235 MPa,and the engineering strain elongation increased to 10.5%,12.1%,15.9%.This indicates that staggered extrusion enables curvature control of the profiles while improving their strength.

Two-dimensional fluid simulations of sawtooth waveform pulsed inductively coupled Ar/O2 plasma discharges

In this work, the effect of sawtooth waveforms on the plasma properties in pulsed inductively coupled Ar/O2 discharges is investigated using a two-dimensional fluid model. It is shown that by increasing the slope of sawtooth waveforms with a constant delivery of RF power during the pulse-on phase, the power rises steadily, and the electron density at the beginning of the pulse-on period is higher, which helps to suppress the overshoot phenomenon in the electron temperature. The peak of the potential when the power is turned on also disappears at larger slopes, indicating that the ion bombarding energy on the wafer is lowered. Since the ion flux above the wafer during the first half of the pulse period is the lowest under this condition, the damage to the wafer caused by energetic ion bombardment could be effectively reduced when operating without bias sources. The effects of duty cycle and pulse frequency on the plasma parameters are also investigated, and the results show that increasing the duty cycle is beneficial to suppress the overshoot in the electron temperature and potential, while the influence of pulse frequency is limited. © 2025 IOP Publishing Ltd. Significant enhancement of the second harmonic generation in Janus α-In/GaSe3 structures

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, known for their small size and high responsiveness, are key to advancing nanoscale nonlinear optical devices. 2D III–VI semiconductors like InSe have enabled transistors with speeds exceeding silicon limits. Recently, the 2D semiconductor α-In2Se3 has achieved large single crystals, with its noncentrosymmetric nature and ferroelectric polarization showing promise for nonlinear optical applications. Here, we investigate its Janus structures, formed by metal substitution in α-In2Se3 to produce InGaSe3 and GaInSe3, and examine their enhanced nonlinear optical properties. We find that the metal substitution significantly boosts the second-harmonic generation (SHG) response in α-In2Se3, with the second-order susceptibility of GaInSe3 reaching 256.9 pm/V at 444 nm, over eight times that of commercial LiNbO3. This enhancement is attributed to changes in the conduction band near the Fermi level due to metal substitution. Polarization-resolved SHG reveals that the vertical and parallel components of InGaSe3 differ by nearly 100 times, a significant anisotropy absent in α-In2Se3 and GaInSe3. These findings highlight the potential of metal-substituted InGaSe3 as a strong, anisotropic nonlinear optical material for compact photonic chips and other devices.

Effect of Substrate Negative Bias on the Composition and Structure of nc-Cu/a-C:H Nanocomposite Films Deposited by FCVA

Copper-doped hydrogenated amorphous carbon (Cu-doped a-C:H) films were synthesized using copper as the cathode and C2H2 as the precursor. The result shows that the negative bias voltage can affect the composition and microstructure of nanocomposite films. With bias voltage increasing, Cu content first increases in the range of 50~300 V and then declines with higher voltage, while the deposition rate decreases continuously. The stress and sp3 content present a similar trend with the bias voltage, increasing during the range from 50 V to 200 V and then decreasing with higher voltage. © 2025 by the authors.
