Mobile and Web-of-Things (WoT) devices at the network edge account for more than half of the world's web traffic, making a great data source for various machine learning (ML) applications, particularly federated learning (FL) which offers a promising solution to privacy-preserving ML feeding on these data. FL allows edge mobile and WoT devices to train a shared global ML model under the orchestration of a central parameter server. In the real world, due to resource heterogeneity, these edge devices often train different versions of models (e.g., VGG-16 and VGG-19) or different ML models (e.g., VGG and ResNet) for the same ML task (e.g., computer vision and speech recognition). Existing FL schemes have assumed that participating edge devices share a common model architecture, and thus cannot facilitate FL across edge devices with heterogeneous ML model architectures. We explored this architecture heterogeneity challenge and found that FL can and should accommodate these edge devices to improve model accuracy and accelerate model training. This paper presents our findings and FlexiFed, a novel scheme for FL across edge devices with heterogeneous model architectures, and three model aggregation strategies for accommodating architecture heterogeneity under FlexiFed. Experiments with four widely-used ML models on four public datasets demonstrate 1) the usefulness of FlexiFed;and 2) that compared with the state-of-the-art FL scheme, FlexiFed improves model accuracy by 2.6%-9.7% and accelerates model convergence by 1.24 × -4.04 ×. © 2023 ACM.

In recent years, high-speed trains are one of the popular research topics in the field of transportation and have attracted much attention from scholars at home and abroad in view of their high efficiency and safety features. High-speed trains are susceptible to unexpected situations of delayed arrival due to the disturbance of external factors including wind and temperature during the trip. The delay of high-speed trains has a vital impact on people's work efficiency and living standards. To solve the problem of intelligent forecast of high-speed train delay, we design and implement a clustering ensemble algorithm based on text data of bullet train operation environment monitoring. We firstly combine the concepts of cosine similarity, Jaccard similarity and information entropy, then fuse a bidirectional weighting formula, and further propose a novel Clustering Ensemble algorithm based on Bidirectional Weighted Co-association (CE-BWC). This approach consists of an inter-cluster weighting formula used to obtain the implicit generalized information by weighting each cluster between clusters, and a reliability weighting formula transferring the cluster information to the data item itself to measure the correlation degree of the data group. Experiments prove that our CE-BWC has better prediction performance for high-speed train delay and outperforms the state-of-the-art benchmark algorithms. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The development of the software and hardware has brought about the abundance and overflow of computing resources. Many Internet companies can lease idle computing resources based on the peak and valley cycles of usage load to provide IaaS service. After the surging development, more and more companies are gradually paying attention to the specific user experience in cloud computing. But there are few works about that aspect in load balance problem. Therefore, we consider the load balancing resource allocation problem, from the perspective of user experience, mainly based on geographical distance and regional Equilibrium, combined with user usage habits, in multiple service periods. A detailed mathematical definition has been established for this problem. This article proposes a mathematical model for the problem, along with an modified CMA-ES (Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy) algorithm, called WS-ESS-CMA-ES algorithm, to allocate computing resources and solve the above problem. The process of using the proposed algorithm to solve the problem of cloud computing resource allocation in real scenarios is simulated, and compared with some other algorithms. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) is the stan-dard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). With the development of artificial intelligence, an increasing number of studies have begun to explore its application in cancer treatment prediction. However, the prior methods exhibit considerable variability even with slight modifications to the input data, which could potentially undermine the reliability of the results. In this paper, we proposed RP-Net, a novel multi-modal fusion-based framework that combines feature information from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and whole slide images (WSI), establishing a relationship to map the therapeutic effectiveness of nCRT for LARC. We investigated the relationship of the tumour region and its periphery tissues, and demonstrated the validity of the proposed framework that involving 11 different combinations of modalities. The experimental results revealed that it has achieved higher prediction accuracy compared to the four intra-categories single-modal combinations and outperformed the two intra-categories multi-modal combinations. When compared to the other four inter-categories multi-modal combinations, the fusion features get accuracy of 2 % ~ 6% improvement respectively.

Generative models have attracted considerable attention for speech separation tasks, and among these, diffusion-based methods are being explored. Despite the notable success of diffusion techniques in generation tasks, their adaptation to speech separation has encountered challenges, notably slow convergence and suboptimal separation outcomes. To address these issues and enhance the efficacy of diffusion-based speech separation, we introduce EDSep, a novel single-channel method grounded in score matching via stochastic differential equation (SDE). This method enhances generative modeling for speech source separation by optimizing training and sampling efficiency. Specifically, a novel denoiser function is proposed to approximate data distributions, which obtains ideal denoiser outputs. Additionally, a stochastic sampler is carefully designed to resolve the reverse SDE during the sampling process, gradually separating speech from mixtures. Extensive experiments on databases such as WSJ0-2mix, LRS2-2mix, and VoxCeleb2-2mix demonstrate our proposed method's superior performance over existing diffusion and discriminative models, validating its efficacy. © 2025 IEEE.

To achieve progressive and accurate decision-making for long-term time series data while meeting the needs of privacy-friendly and early, this paper proposes a universal framework for sequential progressive decision-making (SPD). This framework first segments the data and sets up multiple columns of neural networks according to the number of segments. Each column can make segmented decisions based on the inputs for the period. Additionally, without sharing the original data, the framework leverages lateral hidden layer connections between preceding and succeeding columns to obtain useful features for subsequent decision-making, gradually improving accuracy while avoiding the risk of data leakage. SPD has the advantages of privacy friendliness, column model diversification, prior knowledge reuse, and easy scalability, making it an effective framework for continuous decision-making. The effectiveness of that was validated using various network models in handwritten digit recognition and electrocardiogram classification tasks. The obtained experimental results reveal that SPD not only enables early decision-making while ensuring accuracy but also achieves accuracy levels comparable to or even surpassing those obtained using complete data, with the added benefit of privacy protection.

Recycled and recirculated books, such as ancient texts and reused textbooks, hold significant value in the secondhand goods market, with their worth largely dependent on surface preservation. However, accurately assessing surface defects is challenging due to the wide variations in shape, size, and the often imprecise detection of defects. To address these issues, we propose DDNet, an innovative detection model designed to enhance defect localization and classification. DDNet introduces a surface defect feature extraction module based on a deformable convolution operator (DC) and a densely connected FPN module (DFPN). The DC module dynamically adjusts the convolution grid to better align with object contours, capturing subtle shape variations and improving boundary delineation and prediction accuracy. Meanwhile, DFPN leverages dense skip connections to enhance feature fusion, constructing a hierarchical structure that generates multi-resolution, high-fidelity feature maps, thus effectively detecting defects of various sizes. In addition to the model, we present a comprehensive dataset specifically curated for surface defect detection in recycled and recirculated books. This dataset encompasses a diverse range of defect types, shapes, and sizes, making it ideal for evaluating the robustness and effectiveness of defect detection models. Through extensive evaluations, DDNet achieves precise localization and classification of surface defects, recording a mAP value of 46.7% on our proprietary dataset—an improvement of 14.2% over the baseline model—demonstrating its superior detection capabilities.

With the increasing number of services and their homogenization, the use of Quality of Service (QoS) for recommendations has become necessary. However, existing QoS prediction solutions have limitations in solving the noise and label imbalance problems of dataset, which greatly limit the improvement of QoS prediction accuracy. In this paper, we propose FSNet that contains a feature distribution smoothing module and an improved W-Huber loss function. The feature distribution smoothing module mitigates the effect of noise problem by fitting potential Gaussian distribution of known features with a supervised feedforward neural network. W-Huber loss function mitigates the impact of label imbalance problem on QoS prediction by reweighting the two components of Huber loss function. We conduct extensive experiments on real large-scale QoS dataset, and the results demonstrate that the proposed FSNet method outperforms existing QoS prediction methods.

An improved support vector machine model for energy consumption prediction is proposed to achieve efficient energy saving in *** this paper,firstly,a gray correlation analysis model is used to measure the correlation between temperature,humidity,sunlight and other factors and building energy ***,the sparrow search algorithm(SSA) is introduced to optimize the penalty coefficient c and kernel function parameter g of the support vector machine,and then the SSA-SVM energy consumption prediction model is ***,the experimental results are analyzed by comparing with the data derived from the support vector machine prediction(SVM) model and BP neural network energy consumption *** experimental results show that compared with SVM and BP neural network,the prediction results of SSA-SVM model perform better in error index,indicating that the energy consumption prediction of SSA-SVM model has higher prediction accuracy;the maximum relative error of SSA-SVM prediction model is 0.0514,and the maximum relative errors of the other two models are greater than 0.55,indicating that SSA-SVM model has a higher degree of reliability.
