We present a novel deep learning framework named the Iteratively Optimized Patch Label Inference Network (IOPLIN) for automatically detecting various pavement distresses that are not solely limited to specific ones, such as cracks and potholes. IOPLIN can be iteratively trained with only the image label via the Expectation-Maximization Inspired Patch Label Distillation (EMIPLD) strategy, and accomplish this task well by inferring the labels of patches from the pavement images. IOPLIN enjoys many desirable properties over the state-of-the-art single branch CNN models such as GoogLeNet and EfficientNet. It is able to handle images in different resolutions, and sufficiently utilize image information particularly for the high-resolution ones, since IOPLIN extracts the visual features from unrevised image patches instead of the resized entire image. Moreover, it can roughly localize the pavement distress without using any prior localization information in the training phase. In order to better evaluate the effectiveness of our method in practice, we construct a large-scale Bituminous Pavement Disease Detection dataset named CQU-BPDD consisting of 60,059 high-resolution pavement images, which are acquired from different areas at different times. Extensive results on this dataset demonstrate the superiority of IOPLIN over the state-of-the-art image classification approaches in automatic pavement distress detection. Spatio-temporal propagation of COVID-19 pandemics

The new coronavirus known as COVID-19 is rapidly spreading since December 2019. Without any vaccination or medicine, the means of controlling it are limited to quarantine and social distancing. Here we study the spatio-temporal propagation of the COVID-19 virus in China and compare it to other global locations. Our results suggest that the disease propagation is highly related to population migration from Hubei resembling a Lévy flight which is characteristic of human mobility and thus could be controlled by efficient quarantines. Since quarantine is usually applied on a city level, more insight can be obtained in analyzing the epidemic in cities. Our results suggest that the disease spread in a city in China is characterized by two-stages process. At early times, at order of few days, the infection rate in the city is close to constant probably due to the lack of means to detect infected individuals before infection signs are observed and at later times it decays approximately exponentially due to quarantines. These two stages can explain the significant differences between the propagation in China and in other world-wide locations. While most cities in China control the disease which resulted in the decaying stage, in other world-wide countries the situation is still becoming worse probably due to less social interactions control and overloaded health systems which reflects in the death and recovery rates. Light field cameras are considered to have many potential applications since angular and spatial information is captured simultaneously. However, the limited spatial resolution has brought lots of difficulties in developing related applications and becomes the main bottleneck of light field cameras. In this paper, a learning-based method using residual convolutional networks is proposed to reconstruct light fields with higher spatial resolution. The view images in one light field are first grouped into different image stacks with consistent sub-pixel offsets and fed into different network branches to implicitly learn inherent corresponding relations. The residual information in different spatial directions is then calculated from each branch and further integrated to supplement high-frequency details for the view image. Finally, a flexible solution is proposed to super-resolve entire light field images with various angular resolutions. Experimental results on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods by a large margin in both visual and numerical evaluations. Furthermore, the proposed method shows good performances in preserving the inherent epipolar property in light field images.

This article focuses on a well-studied theoretical problem that, for rapid sampling, a continuous-time system with minimum-phase properties may become a non-minimum phase discrete-time system in the discretization process. The properties of zeros for discrete-time linear models in the field of digital control when using the special shift operator was considered in this paper. From the former relevant studies one can know that the backward triangle sample-and-hold (BTSH) as an alternative hold method to discretize the continuous-time systems has an advantage over ZOH in stabilizing sampling zeros for linear system with classical forward shift operator. In this article, we deduce the exact sampled-data model of linear system using delta operator to replace forward shift operator in the case of BTSH. Furthermore, the expressions and properties of zeros for the corresponding discrete-time system are derived.

Hyperspectral Image Classification with Spatial Consistence Using Fully Convolutional Spatial Propagation Network

In recent years, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated impressive ability to represent hyperspectral images (HSIs) and achieved encouraging results in HSI classification. However, the existing CNN-based models operate at the patch-level, in which pixel is separately classified into classes using a patch of images around it. This patch-level classification will lead to a large number of repeated calculations, and it is hard to identify the appropriate patch size that is beneficial to classification accuracy. In addition, the conventional CNN models operate convolutions with local receptive fields, which cause the failure of contextual spatial information modeling. To overcome these aforementioned limitations, we propose a novel end-to-end, pixel-to-pixel fully convolutional spatial propagation network (FCSPN) for HSI classification. Our FCSPN consists of a 3D fully convolution network (3D-FCN) and a convolutional spatial propagation network (CSPN). Specifically, the 3D-FCN is firstly introduced for reliable preliminary classification, in which a novel dual separable residual (DSR) unit is proposed to effectively capture spectral and spatial information simultaneously with fewer parameters. Moreover, the channel-wise attention mechanism is adapted in the 3D-FCN to grasp the most informative channels from redundant channel information. Finally, the CSPN is introduced to capture the spatial correlations of HSI via learning a local linear spatial propagation, which allows maintaining the HSI spatial consistency and further refining the classification results. Experimental results on three HSI benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed FCSPN achieves state-of-the-art performance on HSI classification. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. A threshold effect of coupling delays on intra-layer synchronization in duplex networks

This paper investigates the impact of inter-layer coupling functions and intra-layer coupling delays on intra-layer synchronization regions and sychronizability. It is found that the inter-layer coupling functions have great influence on intra-layer synchronization regions, as well as on the intra-layer synchronizability. In particular, there exists an inter-layer coupling function such that the inter-layer coupling strength neither improves nor weakens the intra-layer synchronizability. Furthermore, no matter which one of three inter-layer coupling functions is chosen, a small intra-layer delay always keeps the intra-layer synchronized regions almost unchanged, implying that the small delay neither enhances nor suppresses the intra-layer synchronizability. At the same time the delay greatly frustrates the synchronizability in each layer when it is greater than some threshold. Our results may have potential applications for interconnected technological networks where communication delays are inevitably present.

Batched network coding is a variation of random linear network coding which has low computational and storage costs. In order to adapt to random fluctuations in the number of erasures in individual batches, it is not optimal to recode and transmit the same number of packets for all batches. Different distributed optimization models, which are called adaptive recoding schemes, were formulated for this purpose. The key component of these optimization problems is the expected value of the rank distribution of a batch at the next network node, which is also known as the expected rank. In this paper, we put forth a unified adaptive recoding framework with an arbitrary recoding field size. We show that the expected rank functions are concave when the packet loss pattern is a stationary stochastic process, which covers but not limited to independent packet loss and Gilbert-Elliott packet loss model. Under this concavity assumption, we show that there always exists a solution which not only can minimize the randomness on the number of recoded packets but also can tolerate rank distribution errors due to inaccurate measurements or limited precision of the machine. We provide an algorithm to obtain such an optimal optimal solution, and propose tuning schemes that can turn any feasible solution into a desired optimal solution. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Micro-supervised disturbance learning: A perspective of representation probability distribution

The instability is shown in the existing methods of representation learning based on Euclidean distance under a broad set of conditions. Furthermore, the scarcity and high cost of labels prompt us to explore more expressive representation learning methods which depends on the labels as few as possible. To address these issues, the small-perturbation ideology is firstly introduced on the representation learning model based on the representation probability distribution. The positive small-perturbation information (SPI) which only depend on two labels of each cluster is used to stimulate the representation probability distribution and then two variant models are proposed to fine-tune the expected representation distribution of RBM, namely, Micro-supervised Disturbance GRBM (Micro-DGRBM) and Micro-supervised Disturbance RBM (Micro-DRBM) models. The Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence of SPI is minimized in the same cluster to promote the representation probability distributions to become more similar in Contrastive Divergence (CD) learning. In contrast, the KL divergence of SPI is maximized in the different clusters to enforce the representation probability distributions to become more dissimilar in CD learning. To explore the representation learning capability under the continuous stimulation of the SPI, we present a deep Micro-supervised Disturbance Learning (Micro-DL) framework based on the Micro-DGRBM and Micro-DRBM models and compare it with a similar deep structure which has not any external stimulation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed deep Micro-DL architecture shows better performance in comparison to the baseline method, the most related shallow models and deep frameworks for clustering. © 2020, CC0.

The rapid accumulation of indoor positioning data is increasingly booming the interest in indoor mobility analyses. As a fundamental analysis, it is highly relevant to translate raw indoor positioning data into mobility semantics that describe what, where and when in a more concise and semantics-oriented way. Such a translation is challenging as multiple data sources are involved, raw indoor positioning data is of low quality, and translation results are hard to assess. We demonstrate a system TRIPS that streamlines the entire translation process by three functional components. The Configurator provides a standard but concise means to configure multiple input sources, including the indoor positioning data, indoor space information, and relevant contexts. The Translator cleans the indoor positioning data and exports reliable mobility semantics without manual interventions. The Viewer offers a suite of flexible operations to trace the input, output and intermediate data involved in the translation. data analysts can interact with TRIPS to obtain the desired mobility semantics in a visual and convenient way. © 2018 VLDB Endowment.

Practical adaptive time-varying output formation tracking problems for high-order nonlinear strict-feedback multiagent systems are investigated in this paper. The time-varying output formation tracking requires the followers' output vectors to track the output vector of the leader while achieving a time-varying formation. The dynamics of the leader and the followers can have uncertain mismatched nonlinearities while the leader's control input is also unknown. To deal with the mismatched nonlinearities, the backstepping techniques are utilized to construct the protocols. Firstly, visual controllers are designed to overcome the effects of the uncertainties while guaranteeing the stability of each layer. The complicated visual controllers are estimated by the neural networks. A full adaptive protocol is constructed with adaptive gains to avoid using the global information of the interaction topology. Then, an algorithm is presented to design the protocol, whose parameters are much less. Besides, the stability of the algorithm is proved by Lyapunov theories. Finally, simulation results are presented to prove the effectiveness.
