Functional connectivity networks (FCNs), particularly those utilizing the phase lag index (PLI) method, have been instrumental in elucidating the pathological features of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) by assessing the synchrony and lag of electroencephalogram (EEG) signal waveforms. Currently, the more prevalent methods are traditional FCNs that quantify phase synchronization as scalar values and dynamic FCNs (D-FCNs) that employ sliding window approaches to capture the instantaneous variations in functional connectivity. However, these two methods merely capture the low-level functional connections between paired regions of interest (ROIs) from both the static and dynamic perspectives, and fail to reflect the high-level functional connections involving multiple ROIs. Moreover, the feature dimension of the dynamic FCN is excessively high, and there exists a phase mismatch issue between different samples, which renders it impossible to be directly applied to the classification task, and no better solution is available at present. To mitigate these issues, we proposed a comprehensive framework that includes segmenting EEG sequences based on PLI to construct dynamic FCNs;employing seventh-order central moments for feature extraction to form low-order FCNs (Lo-FCNs);and establishing high-order FCNs (Ho-FCNs) based on Pearson correlation theory derived from Lo-FCNs. We conducted classification experiments across four distinct EEG frequency bands using our proposed framework while analyzing relevant features through graph theory and brain topological mapping techniques. The experiments showed that the proposed framework has a high classification accuracy rate in the classification experiments of MDD and NC, and proved the importance of high-order features in classification experiments, indicating that they may serve as physiological markers for MDD diagnosis. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Modeling multi-scale uncertainty with evidence integration for reliable polyp segmentation

Polyp segmentation is critical in medical image analysis. Traditional methods, while capable of producing precise outputs in well-defined regions, often struggle with blurry or ambiguous areas in medical images, which can lead to errors in clinical decision-making. Additionally, these methods typically generate only a single deterministic segmentation result, failing to account for the inherent uncertainty in the segmentation process. This limitation undermines the reliability of segmentation models in clinical practice, as they lack the ability to provide insights into the confidence or certainty of their predictions, leaving clinicians skeptical of their utility. To address these challenges, we propose a novel multi-scale uncertainty modeling framework for polyp segmentation, grounded in evidence theory. Our approach leverages the Dirichlet distribution to classify pixels within polyp images while integrating uncertainty across different scales. We first employ an Uncertainty Region Enhancement Process (UREP) to refine uncertain regions and Integrated Balance Module (IBM) to dynamically balance the weights between different feature maps for generating semantic fusion feature maps. Subsequently, we utilize two feature extraction sub-networks to learn feature representations from original images and semantic fusion feature maps. We further develop a Multi-scale Evidence Integration Network (MEIN) to robustly model uncertainty through subjective logic, merging results from two sub-networks to ensure a comprehensive understanding of uncertainty and produce reliable segmentation results. In contrast to most existing methods, our approach not only generates segmentation results but also provides uncertainty estimates, offering clinicians valuable insights into the reliability of the predictions. Methods based on dynamically expanding architectures can effectively mitigate catastrophic forgetting in class incremental learning (CIL), but they often overlook information sharing and integration between subnetworks, leading to performance degradation and increased parameter count and memory consumption as the network expands. To address these complex issues, we introduce a new method called Task Separation and Knowledge Sharing (TSKS), which transfers knowledge at both the logical and feature levels through Hybrid Knowledge Distillation (HKD). In logical distillation, we combine Global Knowledge Distillation (GKD) and Task Knowledge Distillation (TKD) to establish connections between tasks. To prevent the model from favoring new classes, we design an Attention- Based Feature Fusion (ABFF) mechanism to capture important features. Additionally, we introduce a Soft-Margin Auxiliary Loss (SMAL) to help the model learn new concepts. Extensive experiments show that TSKS outperforms existing models on CIFAR100 and ImageNet100, regardless of whether memory samples are used. Notably, TSKS demonstrates superior performance in memory-free settings, indicating a reduced reliance on rehearsal memory.

Diffusion models are powerful generative models, and this capability can also be applied to discrimination. The inner activations of a pre-trained diffusion model can serve as features for discriminative tasks, namely, diffusion feature. We discover that diffusion feature has been hindered by a hidden yet universal phenomenon that we call content shift. To be specific, there are content differences between features and the input image, such as the exact shape of a certain object. We locate the cause of content shift as one inherent characteristic of diffusion models, which suggests the broad existence of this phenomenon in diffusion feature. Further empirical study also indicates that its negative impact is not negligible even when content shift is not visually perceivable. Hence, we propose to suppress content shift to enhance the overall quality of diffusion features. Specifically, content shift is related to the information drift during the process of recovering an image from the noisy input, pointing out the possibility of turning off-the-shelf generation techniques into tools for content shift suppression. We further propose a practical guideline named GATE to efficiently evaluate the potential benefit of a technique and provide an implementation of our methodology. Despite the simplicity, the proposed approach has achieved superior results on various tasks and datasets, validating its potential as a generic booster for diffusion features. As blockchain technology rapidly advances, it faces significant security threats from attacks like selfish mining, which exploit consensus algorithm vulnerabilities, undermining system security. Traditional analysis methods, primarily reliant on Markov models, are often utilized to address these complex threats. However, these methods frequently fall short in accurately simulating the multifaceted nature of blockchain attacks, leading to gaps in security measures. To bridge this gap, we introduce AutoMiner, an innovative reinforcement learning-based framework that integrates Miner Monte Carlo Tree Search (MMCTS) with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for simulating and detecting potential mining attacks within the Proof of Work (PoW) framework. Our experimental results demonstrate AutoMiner’s capability to outperform traditional selfish and honest mining strategies, achieving up to 20% higher profits under specific scenarios. This highlights AutoMiner’s potential in enhancing blockchain security by providing a more comprehensive and effective approach to analyzing and mitigating mining attacks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The inherent complexity of Wi-Fi signals makes video-aided Wi-Fi 3D pose estimation difficult. The challenges include the limited generalizability of the task across diverse environments, its significant signal heterogeneity, and its inadequate ability to analyze local and geometric information. To overcome these challenges, we introduce WiViPose, a video-aided Wi-Fi framework for 3D pose estimation, which attains enhanced cross-environment generalization through cross-layer optimization. Bilinear temporal-spectral fusion (BTSF) is initially used to fuse the time-domain and frequency-domain features derived from Wi-Fi. Video features are derived from a multiresolution convolutional pose machine and enhanced by local self-attention. Cross-modality data fusion is facilitated through an attention-based transformer, with the process further refined under a supervisory mechanism. WiViPose demonstrates effectiveness by achieving an average percentage of correct keypoints (PCK)@50 of 91.01% across three typical indoor environments. © 2025 IEEE.

Diffusion models are initially designed for image generation. Recent research shows that the internal signals within their backbones, named activations, can also serve as dense features for various discriminative tasks such as semantic segmentation. Given numerous activations, selecting a small yet effective subset poses a fundamental problem. To this end, the early study of this field performs a large-scale quantitative comparison of the discriminative ability of the activations. However, we find that many potential activations have not been evaluated, such as the queries and keys used to compute attention scores. Moreover, recent advancements in diffusion architectures bring many new activations, such as those within embedded ViT modules. Both combined, activation selection remains unresolved but overlooked. To tackle this issue, this paper takes a further step with a much broader range of activations evaluated. Considering the significant increase in activations, a full-scale quantitative comparison is no longer operational. Instead, we seek to understand the properties of these activations, such that the activations that are clearly inferior can be filtered out in advance via simple qualitative evaluation. After careful analysis, we discover three properties universal among diffusion models, enabling this study to go beyond specific models. On top of this, we present effective feature selection solutions for several popular diffusion models. Finally, the experiments across multiple discriminative tasks validate the superiority of our method over the SOTA competitors. Image matching technology is crucial in computer vision applications. However, the traditional SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm often faces challenges under adverse conditions, such as a high number of mismatched points and few accurately matched points. Additionally, in practical scenarios, environmental factors like lighting changes and image blurring further reduce image similarity. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved SIFT-based image matching algorithm to address these challenges. First, SIFT is used to extract image features, and a bidirectional FLANN (Fast Library for Approximate Nearest Neighbors) matching strategy is employed to initially filter out incorrect features. Then, the RANSAC (Random Sample Consensus) algorithm is used to screen out unreliable matching point pairs. Finally, the matching accuracy is evaluated based on the remaining pure matching point pairs. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to the traditional SIFT algorithm, this improved algorithm achieves higher matching accuracy and robustness under adverse conditions, exhibiting superior performance.
