Test-time domain adaptation aims to adapt the model trained on source domains to unseen target domains using a few unlabeled images. Emerging research has shown that the label and domain information is separately embedded in the weight matrix and batch normalization (BN) layer. Previous works normally update the whole network naively without explicitly decoupling the knowledge between label and domain. As a result, it leads to knowledge interference and defective distribution adaptation. In this work, we propose to reduce such learning interference and elevate the domain knowledge learning by only manipulating the BN layer. However, the normalization step in BN is intrinsically unstable when the statistics are re-estimated from a few samples. We find that ambiguities can be greatly reduced when only updating the two affine parameters in BN while keeping the source domain statistics. To further enhance the domain knowledge extraction from unlabeled data, we construct an auxiliary branch with label-independent self-supervised learning (SSL) to provide supervision. Moreover, we propose a bi-level optimization based on meta-learning to enforce the alignment of two learning objectives of auxiliary and main branches. The goal is to use the auxiliary branch to adapt the domain and benefit main task for subsequent inference. Our method keeps the same computational cost at inference as the auxiliary branch can be thoroughly discarded after adaptation. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms the prior works on five WILDS real-world domain shift datasets. This paper examines the mixed convective heat transfer (HTR) of nanofluid (NFD) flow in a rectangular enclosure with the upper moving wall numerically. The lower wall has a high temperature and a number of semi-circular obstacles with the same temperature are installed on it. The upper moving wall has a low temperature and the other two walls are insulated. The enclosure can change from horizontal to vertical. Radiation HTR is considered in the enclosure and there is a magnetic field (MGF) that can change the angle from horizontal to vertical affecting the NFD. This study is carried out for different angles of the enclosure and MGF from horizontal to vertical for radiation parameters (RDP) of 0 to 3 and a constant MGF with Hartmann number of 20 and Richardson number of 10. The aim is to estimate the Nusselt number (Nu), entropy generation (ETG), and Bejan number (Be). The SIMPLE algorithm is utilized using FORTRAN software, and optimization is done using artificial intelligence to find the maximum and minimum output values. The results demonstrate that the maximum value of Nu and Bes corresponds to the MGF angle and enclosure angle of 90°. The minimum value of the Nu and the maximum amount of ETG corresponds to the horizontal MGF and horizontal enclosure when the RDP is 1.5. An increment in the RDP enhances the amount of Nu. The maximum amount of ETG, i.e. 12.87, corresponds to the enclosure with an angle of 45° for the horizontal MGF and the absence of RDP. corresponds to the enclosure with an angle of 45° for the horizontal MGF and the absence of RDP. It was also found that most environmental impacts, and hence values for different environmental factors, arise from the production of nanoparticles; thus, it is a significant contributor to environmental impacts.

Micro-Expression Recognition based on 2D Gabor Filter and Sparse Representation

Micro-expression recognition is always a challenging problem for its quick facial expression. This paper proposed a novel method named 2D Gabor filter and Sparse Representation (2DGSR) to deal with the recognition of micro-expression. In our method, 2D Gabor filter is used for enhancing the robustness of the variations due to increasing the discrimination power. While the sparse representation is applied to deal with the subtlety, and cast recognition as a sparse approximation problem. We compare our method to other popular methods in three spontaneous micro-expression recognition databases. The results show that our method has more excellent performance than other methods.

A reinforcement-learning-based energy-efficient framework for multi-task video analytics pipeline

Deep-learning-based video processing has yielded transformative results in recent years. However, the video analytics pipeline is energy-intensive due to high data rates and reliance on complex inference algorithms, which limits its adoption in energy-constrained applications. Motivated by the observation of high and variable spatial redundancy and temporal dynamics in video data streams, we design and evaluate an adaptive-resolution optimization framework to minimize the energy use of multitask video analytics pipelines. Instead of heuristically tuning the input data resolution of individual tasks, our framework utilizes deep reinforcement learning to dynamically govern the input resolution and computation of the entire video analytics pipeline. By monitoring the impact of varying resolution on the quality of high-dimensional video analytics features, hence the accuracy of video analytics results, the proposed end-to-end optimization framework learns the best non-myopic policy for dynamically controlling the resolution of input video streams to globally optimize energy efficiency. Governed by reinforcement learning, optical flow is incorporated into the framework to minimize unnecessary spatio-temporal redundancy that leads to re-computation, while preserving accuracy. The proposed framework is applied to video instance segmentation which is one of the most challenging computer vision tasks, and achieves better energy efficiency than all baseline methods of similar accuracy on the YouTube-VIS dataset. Characterizing Smart Contract Evolution

Smart contracts are programs that permanently store and automatically execute on the blockchain system such as Ethereum. Due to the non-tamperable nature of the underlying blockchain, smart contracts are difficult to update once deployed, which requires redeploying the contracts and migrating the data. It means that the observation of smart contract evolution in the real world makes more sense. Hence, in this paper, we conducted the first large-scale empirical study to characterize the evolution of smart contracts in Ethereum. For evolution identification, we presented a contract similarity-based search algorithm, digEvolution, and evaluated its effectiveness with five different search strategies. Then we applied this algorithm to 80,152 on-chain contracts we collected from Ethereum, to dig out the evolution among these contracts. We then explored three research questions. We first studied whether the evolution of smart contracts is common (RQ1), then we studied how do the Gas consumption (RQ2) and the vulnerability (RQ3) of smart contracts vary during the evolution. Our research results show that the evolution of smart contracts is not very common. There are some contract components that have vulnerability but still be called by users. The Gas consumption of most smart contracts doesn’t vary during the evolution, contract is Gas-efficient before and after the evolution. The vulnerability of most smart contracts doesn’t vary during the evolution, both are secure before and after the evolution.

Nasotracheal intubation is a crucial emergency procedure that can improve the survival rate of injured patients. Compared to orotracheal intubation, nasotracheal intubation offers greater stability and comfort. However, due to the large curvature of the cavity, the procedure is highly challenging and requires skilled medical staff, which can be a shortage in emergencies and delay patient rescue. To solve this problem, a flexible and portable robot for nasotracheal intubation has been developed in this paper. The robot incorporates a continuum catheter, allowing the shape of the endotracheal tube’s distal section to be controllable and making it easier to pass through the nasal cavity into the trachea. An endoscope is integrated into the distal section of the catheter to make the intubation process more intuitive, allowing doctors to observe the injuries through endoscopic images and adjust the treatment plan. Additionally, the robot is designed with a quick-detachable structure, enabling aseptic and low-cost intubation procedures. The structure and circuitry of the robot are designed for portability, with a smaller size and lower power consumption, which can work for a long time just powered by batteries. Finally, experiments on a mannequin validate that the robotic system effectively reduces the difficulty of tracheal intubation, enabling even non-medically trained operators to complete the procedure with the assistance of the robot.

The field of pose estimation has a wide range of application prospects in various industries in the current era. With the continuous development of deep learning techniques, the effects in the field of human pose estimation are constantly being optimized. However, due to the influence of factors such as occlusion and human posture variability, it is easy to lead to inaccurate identification of keypoints and even keypoints' missing and matching errors, there is still a lot of optimization space for the effect of pose estimation. In this paper, we propose an improvement to generate heatmaps in the training process: increase the radius of the Gaussian kernel and adjust the smoothness of Gaussian distribution to get a larger receptive field, encourage the model to use more context information in prediction, and control other parameters unchanged on the premise of using heatmap regression. Improve keypoint detection performance by optimizing this item. In the experiment, for the COCO-keypoint data set, we selected different methods published in recent years, and after our improvement, we obtained better accuracy and performance than the original method, which proves the validity of our method.

In real-world scenarios, capturing scenes with excessive dynamic range often leads to the partial loss of highlight or dark area information due to irradiance variations and limitations in the capture capabilities of imaging devices caused by their size and material constraints. This phenomenon gives rise to anomalous exposure problems and triggers the loss of crucial initial details, thereby becoming a significant obstacle to achieving high image quality. Despite numerous researchers' integration of exposure compensation techniques into the imaging process, the anomalous exposure problem remains unsolved, hindering progress in image processing. Consequently, considerable research is valuable in implementing exposure calibration techniques on visual perception and multimedia devices. This dissertation proposes FARDBUNet, a novel end-to-end exposure calibration model designed to address the anomalous exposure problem. A key innovation of FARDBUNet is the incorporation of a fused attention mechanism, enabling the model to prioritize regions needing enhanced correction while accounting for the global exposure characteristics of the image. Additionally, to tackle the challenge of inadequate information availability in the localized areas due to exposure issues, we introduce an atrous residual dense block that efficiently captures local information by expanding the receptive field. Comprehensive tests validate the effectiveness of our suggested model, which performs on par with leading techniques on expansive exposure datasets.

Recently published graph neural networks (GNNs) show promising performance at social event detection tasks. However, most studies are oriented toward monolingual data in languages with abundant training samples. This has left the more common multilingual settings and lesser-spoken languages relatively unexplored. Thus, we present a GNN that incorporates cross-lingual word embeddings for detecting events in multilingual data streams. The first exploit is to make the GNN work with multilingual data. For this, we outline a construction strategy that aligns messages in different languages at both the node and semantic levels. Relationships between messages are established by merging entities that are the same but are referred to in different languages. Non-English message representations are converted into English semantic space via the cross-lingual word embeddings. The resulting message graph is then uniformly encoded by a GNN model. In special cases where a lesser-spoken language needs to be detected, a novel cross-lingual knowledge distillation framework, called CLKD, exploits prior knowledge learned from similar threads in English to make up for the paucity of annotated data. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets show the framework to be highly effective at detection in both multilingual data and in languages where training samples are scarce. © 2021, CC BY.
