Investigating the Impact of Selenium-Enriched Foliar Fertilizer on Chinese Wolfberry with a Sensitive, Simple, and Rapid Method Utilizing Hplc-Icp-Ms

This study established a sensitive, simple, and rapid method for the determination of different forms of selenium (Se) in Chinese wolfberry and selenium-rich foliar fertilizer using HPLC-ICP-MS, and successfully applied it to the quantitation of organic and inorganic selenium in 64 batches of Chinese wolfberry and its soaking solutions, as well as 5 types of foliar fertilizer. The results indicated that the selenium content in different batches of Chinese wolfberry varied greatly, with the main form being selenomethionine (SeMet). Moreover, spraying selenium-enriched foliar fertilizer may cause surface selenium residue on Chinese wolfberry, with the residual selenium forms being Se(VI) and Se(IV). This may affect the proportion of organic selenium in the plant (Chinese wolfberry) which has higher bioavailability and lower toxicity compared to inorganic selenium. Therefore, increasing the organic selenium content of the plant may be more beneficial for the application of Chinese wolfberry and the development of human health. © 2023, The Authors. Self-Assemble of Recyclable and Selective Pvdf-Based Molecularly Imprinted Membrane Combing Mussel-Inspired Biomimetic Strategy for Dmm Elimination

The indiscriminate application and abuse of the broad-spectrum fungicide DMM not only causes serious residues on agricultural products, which indirectly endangers human health, but also directly harms aquatic organisms through the persistence of water pollution. In the present study, the integration of eco-friendly membrane technology and highly selective molecular imprinting technology was facilitated through the introduction of PDA biomimetic technology, which promoted the elimination of DMM and held great significance for food safety and environmental protection. Herein, the fabrication process involved the initial preparation of polydopamine modification on the PVDF membrane surface, followed by molecular imprinting polymerization with DMM as a template molecule to obtain a specific adsorbed membrane material (dMIM) for DMM. The physical properties and chemical feature of the developed dMIM were investigated using various characterization techniques, and the preparation parameters were optimized. Ultimately, the superior adsorption capacity (maximum capacity, 314 μg/cm2) and adsorption selectivity of dMIM has been successfully achieved, alongside excellent reusability (number of cycles, 5 times). Moreover, in terms of practical application, the prepared dMIM demonstrated remarkable efficacy in eliminating DMM, with removal efficiencies in tap water ranging from 74.43% to 86.12% for three residual concentrations, and 90.71% - 95.67% in Panax notoginseng aqueous extracts at three material-to-liquid ratios, while had little impact on the quality of the extracts. We believe that this strategy provides a new insight into the design of novel adsorption materials for the selective elimination of DMM in environmental water and complex food matrix. © 2023, The Authors. Tumor metastasis, responsible for approximately 90% of cancer-associated mortality, remains poorly understood. Here in this study, we employed a melanoma lung metastasis model to screen for metastasis-related genes. By sequential tail vein injection of mouse melanoma B16F10 cells and the subsequently derived cells from lung metastasis into BALB/c mice, we successfully obtained highly metastatic B16F15 cells after five rounds of in vivo screening. RNA-sequencing analysis of B16F15 and B16F10 cells revealed a number of differentially expressed genes, some of these genes have previously been associated with tumor metastasis while others are novel discoveries. The identification of these metastasis-related genes not only improves our understanding of the metastasis mechanisms, but also provides potential diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for metastatic melanoma.

Neurotoxicity and transcriptome changes in embryonic zebrafish induced by halobenzoquinone exposure

Halobenzoquinones(HBQs) are emerging disinfection byproducts(DBPs) with a widespread presence in drinking water that exhibit much higher cytotoxicity than regulated DBPs. However, the developmental neurotoxicity of HBQs has not been studied in vivo. In this work, we studied the neurotoxicity of HBQs on zebrafish embryos, after exposure to varying concentrations(0-8 μmol/L) of three HBQs, 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone(2,5-DCBQ), 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone(2,6-DCBQ), and 2,5-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinone(2,5-DBBQ) for 4 to 120 hr post fertilization(hpf). HBQ exposure significantly decreased the locomotor activity of larvae, accompanied by significant reduction of neurotransmitters(dopamine and γ-aminobutyric acid) and acetylcholinesterase activity. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in neuronal morphogenesis( gfap, α1-tubulin, mbp, and syn-2 α) were downregulated by 4.4-, 5.2-, 3.0-, and 4.5-fold in the 5 μmol/L 2,5-DCBQ group and 2.0-, 1.6-, 2.1-, and 2.3-fold in the 5 μmol/L 2,5-DBBQ group, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that HBQ exposure affected the signaling pathways of neural development. This study demonstrates the significant neurotoxicity of HBQs in embryonic zebrafish and provides molecular evidence for understanding the potential mechanisms of HBQ neurotoxicity.

Exploring new therapeutic potential of five commonly used Pteris medicinal plants through pharmaphylogenomics and network pharmacology

Objective: This study investigates the novel medicinal potential of five commonly used Pteris genus plants, including Pteris cretica, P. multifida, P. wallichiana, P. semipinnata, and P. vittata, by analyzing their chloroplast genomes, chemical compositions, and pharmacological activities. Methods: We conducted a rigorous phylogenetic analysis of these five pteridophytes to elucidate their evolutionary relationships. Chemical constituents were subjected to network pharmacology analysis to investigate their potential medicinal properties. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) networks and compounds-disease target networks were constructed using Cytoscape 3.7.2. Functional annotations, including Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis, were conducted by the Metascape platform. Finally, molecular docking simulations were carried out with AutoDock software to validate key findings. Results: Our study revealed a close phylogenetic relationship between P. cretica and P. multifida, with P. cretica exhibiting a higher enrichment score for COVID-19-related pathways. Network pharmacology analysis of P. cretica identified 21 compounds and 540 targets, including 69 associated with COVID-19. The potential therapeutic effects of P. cretica were linked to virus infection, inflammation, and immune response modulation. Core pathways included “coronavirus disease-COVID-19”, “JAK-STAT signaling pathway”, and “Toll-like receptor signaling pathway”. Molecular docking identified (22E)-5α,8α-epidioxyergosta-6,22-dien-3β-ol, notholaenic acid, 2β,15α-diol-ent-kaur-16-ene, and multikaurane A as vital compounds for COVID-19 treatment in P. cretica. Conclusion: This study highlights P. cretica as a potential candidate for COVID-19 prevention and treatment, identifying its key active components and mechanisms. These findings provide a scientific basis for further development of potential therapeutic agents based on P. cretica. © 202

Study on Soil Water Migration Patterns Under Multiple Irrigation Events in Gynostemma Longipes Plantations

Clarifying the changes in soil water related parameters in irrigation event can help optimize the design of irrigation systems and formulate irrigation strategies, which have been widely applied in agriculture and forestry. However, as a commonly used traditional medicinal plant that prefers humid environments, field water migration patterns of Gynostemma longipes has not yet been reported. Therefore, this study focused on the one-year G. longipes as the research object and established a plantation in its real estate area, Ankang City, Shaanxi Province. We studied the dynamic changes in soil water migration characteristics (radius of saturated water, horizontal and vertical migration distance), soil water potential, and environmental factors of multiple irrigation events inG. longipes plantations. Furthermore, we constructed and validated the model of soil water potential based on soil horizontal migration distance. We found that the soil horizontal and vertical migration distance reached 15 cm and 24 cm respectively when irrigation was stopped, which remained stable with different irrigation events (environmental changes). The parameters of soil water migration characteristics and soil water potential over time could be quantitatively described (R2 > 0.94), and the quantitative relationships varied with changes in environmental factors. In addition, soil water potential could be simulated through easily measurable soil horizontal migration distances during and after stopping irrigation (R2> 0.92). Subsequently, we successfully predicted the variation pattern of soil water potential under the condition of variable dripper flow rate (R2 > 0.68). In summary, our findings enrich the relevant theories of soil water migration patterns and provide new ideas for obtaining soil water potential in the field.
