Modern power system is a typical multi-level complex giant system consisting of physical infrastructures, human operators, and social resources, etc. The conventional analytical methods and simulation systems can't provide sufficient guidance for its operation and management, because they are mainly based on physical models, natural phenomenon, or other existing control methods which are based on reductionism. ACP approach, mainly consisting of artificial systems (A), computational experiments (C) and parallel execution (P), which is based on holism and complex system theory, has its specific advantages in the research on power systems. In this article, ACP approach is applied to build up artificial power system (APS) by using multi-agent complex networks. With the help of APS, actual power system's control, scheduling, optimization and management can be improved further via providing theoretical guidance and technical support for the rolling optimizations in normal situations and emergency management in abnormal situations. As a case study, an APS constructed with actual data from North China power grid is constructed and its vulnerability is simulated and analyzed under random, dynamic and static attacks. © 2012 IEEE.

Internet as the fertile ground of free speech, everyone can express their emotions, cognition and views of things via the internet, especially in the era of Web2.0, the occurrence of blog which provides a wider space for personal speech. Internet provides a broad platform for contemporary college students to express thought and emotion, at the same time it provides a channel for education workers to understand students' thought and mental. Through real-time monitoring information on school area network, we can get real-time status, mood and some dynamic data which can portray characteristics of emotion of the concerned entity;also we can abstract the characterization of psychological crisis information, and use this feature to do data mining on these data. In this way we can find group of students which have tendency of psychological crisis, and use corresponding psychological crisis intervention online and offline methods to ease students' psychological crisis and to prevent tragic events in timely. © 2012 IEEE.

Traffic micro-simulation is an important tool in the Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) research. In the micro-simulation, a bottom up system can be built up by the interactions of vehicle agents, road agents, traffic lights agents, etc. The Artificial societies, Computational experiments, and Parallel execution (ACP) approach suggests integrating other metropolitan systems such as logistic, infrastructure, legal and regulatory, weather and environmental systems to build an Artificial Transportation system (ATS) to help solve ITS problems. This is reasonable as the transportation system is complex that is affected by many systems interacting with each other. However, there is a challenge that the computing burden can be very heavy as there can be many agents of different kinds interacting in parallel in ATS. In recent years, the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have been applied successfully in many areas for parallel computing. Compared with the traditional CPU cluster, GPU has an obvious advantage of low cost of hardware and electricity consumption. In this paper, we build a parallel traffic simulation module of ATS with GPU. The simulation results are reasonable and a maximum speedup factor of 105 is obtained compared with the CPU implementations. © 2012 IEEE.

Traffic signal coordination has long been a hot topic in Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) research. Simulation-based optimization is an important method to optimize the coordination designs as the traffic systems are not easily described by mathematical models accurately. For the traffic simulator in the method, micro-simulation is becoming more and more popular than the macroscopic or mesoscopic simulation in recent years, as the micro-simulation can describe drivers' decision-making process and their driving behaviors in the framework of ITS. However, the computing burden for the micro-simulation is usually very heavy as a large number of vehicles are modeled and simulated separately. For the optimizer in the method, iterative algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are widely used to find the global optimal solutions. However, these algorithms usually take too much time to converge when a large-scale road network is encountered. To alleviate the computing burden and speed up the convergence, we build an agent-based traffic simulator and employ Ordinal Optimization (OO) as the optimizer. We accelerate both the simulator and the optimizer with Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), which has been applied successfully in many areas for parallel computing. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the OO method and the power of GPU for parallel computing. © 2012 IEEE.

To further enhance emergency management skills of an organisation's emergency response personnel, emergency response training,especially 3D emergency drill, is currently becoming more and more important in the petrochemical sector. So, a novel 3D emergency drills system is designed and developed based on ACP approach, which can be used for mocking emergency response plan drills and evaluating the plan. A case study reveals that the performance of the system is good and the system can meet the needs of emergency response training and optimizing emergency response plan in petrochemical plants. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel WQA (Web Question Answering) approach based on the combination CCG (Combinatory Categorial Grammar) and DL (Description Logic) ontology, in order to promote semantic-level accuracy through deep text understanding capabilities. We propose to take DL based semantic modeling, i.e., translating lambda-expression encoding of question meaning into DL based semantic representations. The advantage of such approach is a seamless exploitation of existing semantic resource coded as DL ontology, which is widespread in such area as the Semantic Web and conceptual modeling. The experiments are conducted with a repository of complex Chinese questions which involves the satisfaction of some object property restrictions. The experimental results show that producing the semantic representations with the combination of CCG parsing and DL reasoning is an effective approach for question understanding at semantic level, in terms of both understanding accuracy promotion and semantic resource exploitation.

Because the structure and function of a high-rise building is complex and the density of occupants is high, and the rescue from outside is very difficult, safe and timely evacuation is an important issue under high-rise building fires. Worsely, it is impossible to do experiments for economic, moral, or even legal reasons. In this paper, based on an ACP (artificial systems, computational experiments, parallel excution) approach, a design of an artificial evacuation system for computational experiments research on societies evacuation strategies is proposed. Based on the buildingEXODUS platform, the agent technology is used to build the high-rise building architectures and occupant individuals who have autonomous activities. By using CFAST software, numerical calculation technology is used to build several kinds of fire scenarios. By interactions and influences, an artificial evacuation system can be built. © 2012 IEEE.

With the fast development of Internet and its data scale, B2B (Business to Business), whose speed and high availability advantage is based on Internet, is eroding more and more market share of traditional business. In recent years, the new data processing technologies, such as cloud computing, assure the enhancement of computer's computing capacity; it has become possible for researchers to process and analyze the massive business data, including large scale customer data, and large scale commodity information. A new B2B platform frame, based on cloud computing with less running time and better response efficiency, is proposed here to promote transaction handle efficiency. By adoption of complex network theory and cloud computing technology, the new platform has been evaluated to decrease transaction handle time, and make more benefits.
