Backup control barrier function (Backup CBF) is a tractable formulation that ensure the feasibility of CBF-based quadratic programming (QP) problems through implicitly defined control invariant set. Backup CBF is based on two fundamental ingredients: a known backup set and a fixed backup policy, and the implicitly defined control invariant set is evaluated through forward integration by backup policy in a finite horizon online. However, there is a lack of systematic methods for providing the backup set and backup policy for a system with input constraints, making it difficult to synthesize a backup CBF. In this paper, we propose a method for second-order systems to obtain backup policy and backup set practically, rather than empirical choice, by constructing a more conservative explicit CBF-QP with auxiliary velocity constraints integrated. The proposed method warms up a backup CBF by an explicit conservative CBF-QP under mild assumptions, while without excessive conservatism, allowing the tasks of safety and feasibility to be guaranteed theoretically. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in simulation.

Emergent grain boundary phases in stressed polycrystalline thin films

The grain boundary (GB) microstructure influences and is influenced by the development of residual stresses during synthesis of polycrystalline thin films. Recent studies have shown that the frustration between the preferred growth direction and rotations of abutting crystals to local cusps in GB energies leads to internal stresses localized within nanoscopic surface layers around the valleys and ridges that form at emergent boundaries (eGBs). Using a combination of continuum frameworks, numerical analyses, and all-atom simulations of bicrystal 〈111〉 copper films, we show that eGBs tune their surface morphology and rotation extent in response to external strains. Compression favors rotation to and growth of low-energy GB phases (complexions) at eGB valleys while tension favors the transitions at eGB ridges, a reflection of the stress-induced mass efflux/influx that changes the energetic balance between interfacial and deformation energies. Molecular dynamics simulations of strained and growing bicrystal films reveal that the eGB phase transition is coupled to island formation at the surface triple junctions, providing a direct link between eGB phases and surface step flow. The interplay between eGB structure, morphology, and mechanics emerges as a crucial ingredient for predictive understanding of stress and morphological evolution during film growth, with broad implications for multifunctional response of polycrystalline surfaces in a diverse range of surface phenomena such as surface-mediated deformation, interfacial embrittlement, thermal grooving, stress corrosion, surface catalysis, and topological conduction.

An Acid Rain–Friendly Nh3 Control Strategy to Maximize Benefits Toward Human Health and the Ecosystem

Ammonia (NH3) abatement remains controversial in China owing to its effectiveness in reducing PM2.5 pollution and nitrogen deposition but with the potential risk of promoting acid rain formation, necessitating scientific guidance. Here, we propose a novel method for designing an NH3 control strategy to mitigate both air pollution and nitrogen deposition without significantly exacerbating acid rain. This method involves extending the response surface model (RSM) to deposition using a delicately developed polynomial response function of deposition (i.e., dep-RSM). The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) dep-RSM application reveals that 16 out of 41 cities have NH3 control potentials from 15% to 71%. Excellent NH3 control potentials have been noted between April and June (78%–92%). From 2013 to 2017, the effective SO2 and NOx control significantly reduced wet sulfur and oxidized nitrogen deposition, providing considerable NH3 abatement potentials (15%–24%) to further reduce PM2.5 and nitrogen deposition by up to 2% and 9%, respectively, without acid rain exacerbation (the wet neutralization factor was maintained). Additionally, 57% and 73% NH3 emission reduction potentials were obtained under acid rain constraints with 75% and 86% reductions in the other precursors to reduce the average PM2.5 concentration below 25 and 15 µg/m3, and an additional 8408 and 14459 premature deaths could only be avoided at an extra cost of 8.7 and 19.7 billion CNY, respectively. Meanwhile, the N deposition considerably reduced by 10 and 13 kgN/ha·yr. However, the YRD region could still simultaneously obtain substantial amounts of PM2.5 and N deposition mitigation using the strategy proposed herein. The expanded optimization system can be directly adopted by policymakers to implement coordinated control in regions or countries facing the same NH3 control conundrum. © 2022, The Authors. The value of a statistical life(VSL)is a crucial tool for monetizing health *** explore the VSL in China,this study examines people’s willingness to pay(WTP)to reduce death risk from air pollution in six representative cities in China based on face-to-face contingent valuation interviews(n=3936)from March 7,2019 to September 30,*** results reveal that the WTP varied from CNY 455 to 763 in 2019(USD 66-111),corresponding to a VSL range of CNY 3.79-6.36 million(USD 549395-921940).The VSL in China in 2019 is estimated to be CNY 4.76 million(USD 689659).The statistics indicate that monthly expenditure levels,environmental concerns,risk attitudes,and assumed market acceptance,which have seldom been dis‐cussed in previous studies,significantly impact WTP and *** findings will serve as a reference for ana‐lyzing mortality risk reduction benefits in future research and for policymaking.

NH 3 emission control has proven to be of great importance in reducing PM 2.5 concentrations in China, while how it affects nitrogen/sulfur (N/S) deposition is still unclear. This study developed a new response surface model to quantify the responses of N/S deposition to NH 3 emission control in the Yangtze River Delta, China. NH 3 control was found to have higher efficiency in reducing N/S deposition than NO x and SO 2 alone. The reduced N deposition response to NH 3 emission abatement was higher in the northern part of the YRD region, whereas oxidized N deposition decreased sharply in the region with a low N critical load. An unexpected cobenefit was found in reducing N deposition when we controlled the NH 3 and NO x emissions simultaneously. Compared with the sum effect of individual NH 3 and NO x emission abatement, the extra benefits from the synergy controls accounted for 4.4% (1.23 kg N·ha -1 ·yr -1 ) of the total N deposition, of which 81% came from the oxidized N deposition. The YRD region could receive the largest cobenefits with a 1:1 ratio of NO x :NH 3 emission reduction. The NH 3 emission control also changed the ratio of wet S deposition to dry S deposition and mitigated wet S deposition. These findings highlight the effectiveness of NH 3 emission control and suggest a multiple pollutant control strategy for reducing N/S deposition, which may also be appropriate for other regions in China and other countries. © 2022, The Authors. Mainland China is the world's largest emitter of anthropogenic air pollutants, and measurable amounts of Mainland Chins's pollution are transported via the atmosphere to other countries, including the United ***, a large fraction of Mainland Chinas emissions is due to manufacture of goods for foreign ***, we analyze the itnpacts of trade-related Mainland China's air pollutant emissions on the global atmospheric environment, linking an economic-emission analysis and atmospheric chemical transport *** find that in 2006, 36% of anthropogenic sulfur dioxide, 27% of nitrogen oxides, 22 % of carbon monoxide, and 17% of black carbon emitted in Mainland China were associated with production of goods for *** each of these pollutants, about 21% of export-related Mainland China's emissions were attributed to Mainland Chinato-US *** modeling shows that transport of the export-related Mainland China's pollution contributed 3-10% of annual mean surface sulfate concentrations and 0.5-1.5% of ozone over the western United States in *** Mainland China's pollution also resulted in one extra day or more of noncompliance with the US ozone standard in 2006 over the Los Angeles area and many regions in the eastern United *** a daily basis, the export-related Mainland China's pollution contributed, at a maximum, 12-24% of sulfate concentrations over the western United *** the United States outsourced manufacturing to Mainland China, sulfate pollution in 2006 increased in the western United States but decreased in the eastern United States, reflecting the competing effect between enhanced transport of Mainland China's pollution and reduced US *** findings are relevant to international efforts to reduce transboundary air pollution.

In this paper, a stochastic model predictive control (SMPC) approach is proposed to schedule a hybrid energy system (HES) which composes a battery energy storage system (BESS) and a wind farm. The SMPC is used to control the charge and discharge of the BESS to minimize the operation costs and maximum the selling power revenue for the HES owner with considering wind production and electricity price forecast uncertainties. Case study is employed to assess the performance of the SMPC approach and simulation results show that this approach proposed in this paper is effective and feasible.

A hybrid phase field method for fluid-structure interactions in viscous fluids

We present a novel computational modeling framework to numerically investigate fluid-structure interaction in viscous fluids using the phase field embedding method. Each rigid body or elastic structure immersed in the incompressible viscous fluid matrix, grossly referred to as the particle in this paper, is identified by a volume preserving phase field. The motion of the particle is driven by the fluid velocity in the matrix for passive particles or combined with its self-propelling velocity for active particles. The excluded volume effect between a pair of particles or between a particle and the boundary is modeled by a repulsive potential force. The drag exerted to the fluid by a particle is assumed proportional to its velocity. When the particle is rigid, its state is described by a zero velocity gradient tensor within the nonzero phase field that defines its profile and a constraining stress exists therein. While the particle is elastic, a linear constitutive equation for the elastic stress is provided within the particle domain. A hybrid, thermodynamically consistent hydrodynamic model valid in the entire computational domain is then derived for the fluid-particle ensemble using the generalized Onsager principle accounting for both rigid and elastic particles. Structure-preserving numerical algorithms are subsequently developed for the thermodynamically consistent model. Numerical tests in 2D and 3D space are carried out to verify the rate of convergence and numerical examples are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the computational framework for simulating fluid-structure interactions for passive as well as self-propelling active particles in a viscous fluid matrix. Most previous studies involving public goods games are investigated under a simplifying assumption that participators are compulsive in collective interactions and contribute unconditionally to the public pool. Nevertheless, how the conditional investment mechanism based on individual's reputation affects the evolution of cooperation in structured populations is still unclear. Here we introduce a reputation-based conditional investment rule for constituting participant groups into spatial threshold public goods game, where the public goods game can be conducted only if the participant number is not less than the threshold parameter. Interestingly, we find that large threshold parameter results in the optimal environment for cooperators' viability.

Energy cost and greenhouse gas emissions of a Chinese solar tower power plant

It is commonly assumed that the application of solar power system can save energy and relief global climate change. Presented in this study is the account of energy performance and greenhouse gas emissions of a planned solar tower power plant in China based on the life cycle analysis method. The conservative estimation of energy cost for the concerned plant is 1.21 times of the electricity output, which is a relatively decent performance amongst power generation technologies. In order to analyze the greenhouse gas performance, a comparison is carried out between the solar tower power plant and conventional coal-fired power plant in China. Results show the application of this solar system obtains a net greenhouse gas emission reduction of 0.31E+06 ton CO2 equivalent, during its operating period of twenty years. It is believed that this successful example can lend solid support to a future wide use of solar power in China.
