We investigate the quantum phase transition in the alternating XY chain with the XZX+YZY type of three-spin interactions. We present the exact solution derived by means of the Jordan-Wigner transformation and study the average magnetization, spin correlations, and von Neumann entropy to establish the phase diagram. The phase diagram consists of the ferromagnetic phases, the paramagnetic phases, and the phase with weak magnetization (WM). By examining the nearest-neighbor transverse spin correlation, we probe that in the WM phase, the spins within a supercell generate a cluster with a small total spin, but between the nearest-neighbor supercells are distributed randomly. Especially for the dimerized limit case, the spins within a supercell tend to point to opposite directions of the transverse field. In addition, we also investigate the influence of the three-site interaction, and find that the WM phase is absent as the strength of the three-site interaction increases. © 2024, The Authors. Energy cost and greenhouse gas emissions of a Chinese solar tower power plant

It is commonly assumed that the application of solar power system can save energy and relief global climate change. Presented in this study is the account of energy performance and greenhouse gas emissions of a planned solar tower power plant in China based on the life cycle analysis method. The conservative estimation of energy cost for the concerned plant is 1.21 times of the electricity output, which is a relatively decent performance amongst power generation technologies. In order to analyze the greenhouse gas performance, a comparison is carried out between the solar tower power plant and conventional coal-fired power plant in China. Results show the application of this solar system obtains a net greenhouse gas emission reduction of 0.31E+06 ton CO2 equivalent, during its operating period of twenty years. It is believed that this successful example can lend solid support to a future wide use of solar power in China.

The Schrödinger equation for general non-hermitian quantum system

We derive a new time-dependent Schrödinger equation(TDSE) for quantum models with nonhermitian Hamiltonian. Within our theory, the TDSE is symmetric in the two Hilbert spaces spanned by the left and the right eigenstates, respectively. The physical quantities are also identical in these two spaces. Based on this TDSE, we show that exchanging two quasi-particles in a non-hermitian model can generate arbitrary geometric phase. The system can also violate the Lieb-Robinson bound in non-relativistic quantum mechanics so that an action in one place will immediately cause a change in the distance. We show that the above two surprising behaviors can also appear in anyonic model, which makes us propose that the non-hermitian single particle model may possess many common features with anyonic model. Bose–Einstein condensation in one-dimensional systems with short-range correlated disordered on-site potentials

We study Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) in one-dimensional tight-binding systems with two kinds of short-range correlated disordered on-site energy sequences (OSESs). One is the chaotic sequence generated by the modified Bernoulli map, the other is the random-dimer sequence. For these two kinds of short-range correlated systems, we consider binary and non-binary versions of sequences. It is found that BEC can occur in these systems at finite temperature and their transition temperatures ( $$T_{C}s$$ ) increase with the potential strength w. Moreover, the $$T_{C}s$$ of the systems with non-binary OSESs are greater than those of the binary ones. And the $$T_{C}$$ increases with the correlation parameter B ( $$0

Possible existence of a dibaryon candidate N▵ (D21)

Inspired by the experimental report by WASA-at-COSY Collaboration, we investigate the possibile existence of the dibaryon candidate N▵ with quantum numbers IJP= 21+(D21). The dynamical calculation shows that we cannot obtain the bound D21 state in the models which can obtain the experimental d. The low-energy scattering phase shifts of the N-▵ scattering give the same conclusion. Besides, the mass calculation by using the Gursey-Radicati mass formula and the analysis of the matrix elements of the color magnetic interaction show that the mass of D21is larger than that of D12(N▵ with IJP= 12+), which indicate that it is less possible for the D21than the D12to form bound state. Summation of Divergent Series and Quantum Phase Transitions in Kitaev Chains with Long-Range Hopping

We study the quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in extended Kitaev chains with long-range (1/rα) hopping. Formally, there are two QPT points at µ = µ0(α) and µπ(α) (µ is the chemical potential) which correspond to the summations of (formula presented) and (formula presented), respectively. When α ≤ 0, both the series are divergent and it is usually believed that no QPTs exist. However, we find that there are two QPTs at µ = µ0(0) and µπ(0) for α = 0 and one QPT at µ = µπ(α) for α 0 and induces topological phases with the winding number ω := ±1/2. At the same time, the von Neumann entropy are power law of the subchain length L no matter in the gapped region or not. In addition, we also study the QPTs, topological properties, and von Neumann entropy of the systems with α > 0. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking in non-Hermitian Kitaev and extended Kitaev models

The spontaneous parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking is discussed in non-Hermitian PT-symmetric Kitaev and extended Kitaev models whose Hermiticity is broken by the presence of two conjugated imaginary potentials ±iγ at two end sites. In the case of the non-Hermitian Kitaev model, a spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking transition (SPTBT) occurs at a certain γc in the topologically trivial phase (TTP) region, similar to that of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. However, unlike the SSH model, the system also undergoes such a transition in the topologically nontrivial phase (TNP) region. We study an extended Kitaev model by combining the superconducting pairing in the Kitaev model and the staggered hopping in the SSH model. This model contains three different topological phases: the TTP, the Kitaev-like TNP, and the SSH-like TNP. For the non-Hermitian extended Kitaev model, a SPTBT occurs in the Kitaev-like TNP region, as well as in part of the TTP and SSH-like TNP regions, whereas the PT symmetry is broken for an arbitrary nonzero γ in the rest of the TTP and SSH-like TNP regions. Therefore, we can conclude that there is no universal correlation between topological properties and the SPTBT.

Dynamical thermalization of Frenkel-Kontorova model in the thermodynamic limit

We study numerically the process of dynamical thermalization in the Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model with weak nonlinearity. The total energy has initially equidistributed among some of the lowest frequency linear modes. It is found that the energy transfers continuously to the high-frequency modes and finally evolves towards energy equipartition in the FK model. However, the metastable state, which was found in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) model and φ4 model in a relatively short time scale, is not found in the FK model. We further perform a very accurate systematic study of the equipartition time Teq as functions of the particle number N, the nonlinear parameter β, and the energy density ɛ. In the thermodynamic limit, the dependence of Teq on β and ɛ is found to display a power law behavior: Teq∝βaɛb. The exponents a and b are numerically found to be approximately −2.0 and 1.43. This scaling law is also quite different from those of the FPU-β model and φ4 model.

Work done and irreversible entropy production in a suddenly quenched quantum spin chain with asymmetrical excitation spectra

In this paper, we extend the studies on the emergent thermodynamics in a quenched quantum Ising chain (QIC) [R. Dorner, J. Goold, C. Cormick, M. Paternostro, and V. Vedral, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 160601 (2012)] to a more general quantum spin chain with asymmetrical excitation spectra. We verify that the Jarzynski and Tasaki-Crooks relations are still tenable in this system. As an example, we discuss the behaviors of the work done and irreversible entropy production induced by a sudden quenching in the anisotropic XY chain in a transverse field with the XZY-YZX type of three-site interactions. Different from the QIC, this system has the phase transitions not only between two gapped phases, but also between gapped (or gapless) and gapless phases at zero temperature. We discuss the effects of quantum phase transitions on the work done and irreversible entropy production at low temperature.

A wide part of scientific research in the food-packaging sector has shown interesting challenges in assuring food shelf-life extension. Conventional plastic is mostly used for food packaging, hence has major environmental drawbacks by being non-degradable and accumulating over the years due to its elimination process. Biodegradable food packaging polymers have contributed to overcoming these challenges and diverted from the environmental concern. In the light of the sustainable development goals, implementing green technology in current industries help secure the consumer's safety by minimizing food loss and reducing plastic waste, thus attaining environmental sustainability. Whey protein isolate (WPI) has been considerably investigated lately and used in packaging formulation for its functional properties. This work aims to produce a biopolymer film destined for food packaging based on the crosslinking of whey protein isolate using glycerol as a plasticizer. The thermal properties of the film samples were investigated. Other aspects of the WPI biopolymer can be studied for other potential uses, more additives can be added to develop further properties depending on the final use of the film. The developed polymer can potentially be used in the food packaging industry under various conservation conditions.
