Semantic correspondence remains a challenging task for establishing correspondences between a pair of images with the same category or similar scenes due to the large intra-class appearance. In this paper, we introduce a novel problem called’Small Object Semantic Correspondence (SOSC).’ This problem is challenging due to the close proximity of keypoints associated with small objects, which results in the fusion of these respective features. It is difficult to identify the corresponding key points of the fused features, and it is also difficult to be recognized. To address this challenge, we propose the keypoint Bounding box-centered Cropping (KBC) method, which aims to increase the spatial separation between keypoints of small objects, thereby facilitating independent learning of these keypoints. The KBC method is seamlessly integrated into our proposed inference pipeline and can be easily incorporated into other methodologies, resulting in significant performance enhancements. Additionally, we introduce a novel framework, named KBCNet, which serves as our baseline model. KBCNet comprises a Cross-Scale Feature Alignment (CSFA) module and an efficient 4D convolutional decoder. The CSFA module is designed to align multi-scale features, enriching keypoint representations by integrating fine-grained features and deep semantic features. Meanwhile, the 4D convolutional decoder, based on efficient 4D convolution, ensures efficiency and rapid convergence. To empirically validate the effectiveness of our proposed methodology, extensive experiments are conducted on three widely used benchmarks: PF-PASCAL, PF-WILLOW, and SPair-71k. Our KBC method demonstrates a substantial performance improvement of 7.5% on the SPair-71K dataset, providing compelling evidence of its efficacy. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Diffuse tumors: Molecular determinants shared by different cancer types

Most cancer types have both diffuse and non-diffuse subtypes, which have rather distinct morphologies, namely scattered tiny tumors vs. one solid tumor, and different levels of aggressiveness. However, the causes for forming such distinct subtypes remain largely unknown. Using the diffuse and non-diffuse gastric cancers (GCs) as the illustrative example, we present a computational study based on the transcriptomic data from the TCGA and GEO databases, to address the following questions: (i) What are the key molecular determinants that give rise to the distinct morphologies between diffuse and non-diffuse cancers? (ii) What are the main reasons for diffuse cancers to be generally more aggressive than non-diffuse ones of the same cancer type? (iii) What are the reasons for their distinct immunoactivities? And (iv) why do diffuse cancers on average tend to take place in younger patients? The study is conducted using the framework we have previously developed for elucidation of general drivers cancer formation and development. Our main discoveries are: (a) the level of (poly-) sialic acids deployed on the surface of cancer cells is a significant factor contributing to questions (i) and (ii);(b) poly-sialic acids synthesized by ST8SIA4 are the key to question (iii);and (c) the circulating growth factors specifically needed by the diffuse subtype dictate the answer to question (iv). All these predictions are substantiated by published experimental studies. Our further analyses on breast, prostate, lung, liver, and thyroid cancers reveal that these discoveries generally apply to the diffuse subtypes of these cancer types, hence indicating the generality of our discoveries. © 2024

An Enhanced Approach for Few-Shot Segmentation Via Smooth Downsampling Mask and Label Smoothing Loss

Few-shot semantic segmentation aims to segment new categories with only a small number of annotated images. Previous methods mainly focused on exploiting the pixel-level correlation between the support image and the query image, combined with attention-based methods, resulting in significant advancements. In this paper, we introduce a new perspective to enhance few-shot segmentation. We identify that utilizing the bilinear interpolation method to downsample the mask leads to the loss of fine-grained information from the target features. To address this issue, we propose a Smooth Downsampling Mask (SDM) method. The SDM method is designed to retain more effective target semantic features by employing a cascaded downsampling approach with a smooth kernel for mask processing. Additionally, we propose a label smoothing loss to further enhance the performance, which provides direct guidance for low-resolution feature map optimization. Notably, our proposed method involves no additional learnable parameters and computes efficiently. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we conduct extensive experiments on three public benchmarks, PASCAL-5i, COCO-20i, and FSS-1000, and achieve considerable improvements. © 2024, The Authors. Medical image segmentation is a challenging task especially in multimodality medical image *** this paper,an improved pulse coupled neural network based on multiple hybrid features grey wolf optimizer(MFGWO-PCNN)is proposed for multimodality medical image ***,a two-stage medical image segmentation method based on bionic algorithm is presented,including image fusion and image *** image fusion stage fuses rich information from different modalities by utilizing a multimodality medical image fusion model based on maximum energy *** the stage of image segmentation,an improved PCNN model based on MFGWO is proposed,which can adaptively set the parameters of PCNN according to the features of the *** modalities of FLAIR and TIC brain MRIs are applied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed MFGWO-PCNN *** experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the other seven algorithms in subjective vision and objective evaluation indicators.

ResolvingWord Vagueness with Scenario-guided Adapter for Natural Language Inference

Natural Language Inference (NLI) is a crucial task in natural language processing that involves determining the relationship between two sentences, typically referred to as the premise and the hypothesis. However, traditional NLI models solely rely on the semantic information inherent in independent sentences and lack relevant situational visual information, which can hinder a complete understanding of the intended meaning of the sentences due to the ambiguity and vagueness of language. To address this challenge, we propose an innovative ScenaFuse adapter that simultaneously integrates large-scale pre-trained linguistic knowledge and relevant visual information for NLI tasks. Specifically, we first design an image-sentence interaction module to incorporate visuals into the attention mechanism of the pre-trained model, allowing the two modalities to interact comprehensively. Furthermore, we introduce an image-sentence fusion module that can adaptively integrate visual information from images and semantic information from sentences. By incorporating relevant visual information and leveraging linguistic knowledge, our approach bridges the gap between language and vision, leading to improved understanding and inference capabilities in NLI tasks. Extensive benchmark experiments demonstrate that our proposed ScenaFuse, a scenario-guided approach, consistently boosts NLI performance. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis with Explicit Sentiment Augmentations

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA), a fine-grained sentiment classification task, has received much attention recently. Many works investigate sentiment information through opinion words, such as "good" and "bad". However, implicit sentiment data widely exists in the ABSA dataset, whose sentiment polarity is hard to determine due to the lack of distinct opinion words. To deal with implicit sentiment, this paper proposes an ABSA method that integrates explicit sentiment augmentations (ABSA-ESA) to add more sentiment clues. We propose an ABSA-specific explicit sentiment generation method to create such augmentations. Specifically, we post-train T5 by rule-based data and employ three strategies to constrain the sentiment polarity and aspect term of the generated augmentations. We employ Syntax Distance Weighting and Unlikelihood Contrastive Regularization in the training procedure to guide the model to generate the explicit opinion words with the same polarity as the input sentence. Meanwhile, we utilize the Constrained Beam Search to ensure the augmentations are aspect-related. We test ABSA-ESA on two ABSA benchmarks. Medical scene graph contributes to cognitive tasks such as question answering. An automatic medical scene graph generator can annotate medical images with scene graphs conveniently. An end-to-end model is proposed, which contains an automatic medical scene graph generator based on medical images and surgery records. The novel model can extract symptom information of the images from surgery records via name entity recognition then convert it into scene graphs. The content and format of the scene graph are pre-defined according to the features of the images. A medical scene graph (MSG) dataset is also produced. The dataset contains 116 scene graphs where each graph includes 6 to 30 entities. Experiments show that our model performs well on making scene graphs of CT coronary angiography. Significantly, the scene graphs have the type, state, location, and index of arteries. To verify the practicability of the MSG dataset, We construct an intelligent model that can generate key diagnostic results. In addition, our medical scene graph generator can be applied to other medical areas to annotate different kinds of medical images intelligently. And the MSG dataset can directly be used in other cognitive visual tasks. © 2021 IEEE.

In visual-based Reinforcement Learning (RL), agents often struggle to generalize well to environmental variations in the state space that were not observed during training. The variations can arise in both task-irrelevant features, such as background noise, and task-relevant features, such as robot configurations, that are related to the optimal decisions. To achieve generalization in both situations, agents are required to accurately understand the impact of changed features on the decisions, i.e., establishing the true associations between changed features and decisions in the policy model. However, due to the inherent correlations among features in the state space, the associations between features and decisions become entangled, making it difficult for the policy to distinguish them. To this end, we propose Saliency-Guided Features Decorrelation (SGFD) to eliminate these correlations through sample reweighting. Concretely, SGFD consists of two core techniques: Random Fourier Functions (RFF) and the saliency map. RFF is utilized to estimate the complex non-linear correlations in high-dimensional images, while the saliency map is designed to identify the changed features. Under the guidance of the saliency map, SGFD employs sample reweighting to minimize the estimated correlations related to changed features, thereby achieving decorrelation in visual RL tasks. Our experimental results demonstrate that SGFD can generalize well on a wide range of test environments and significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in handling both task-irrelevant variations and task-relevant variations.

Secure and Energy-efficient Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-enabled Visible Light Communication via A Multi-objective Optimization Approach

In this research, a unique approach to provide communication service for terrestrial receivers via using unmanned aerial vehicle-enabled visible light communication is investigated. Specifically, we take into account a unmanned aerial vehicle-enabled visible light communication scenario with multiplex transmitters, multiplex receivers, and a single eavesdropper, each of which is equipped with a single photodetector. Then, a unmanned aerial vehicle deployment multi-objective optimization problem is formulated to simultaneously make the optical power received by receiving surface more uniform, minimize the amount of information collected by a eavesdropper, and minimize the energy consumption of unmanned aerial vehicles, while the locations and transmission power of unmanned aerial vehicles are simultaneously optimized under certain constraints. Since the formulated unmanned aerial vehicle deployment multiobjective optimization problem is complex and nonlinear, it is challenging to be tackled by using conventional methods. For the purpose of solving the problem, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition with chaos initiation and crossover mutation is proposed. Simulation outcomes show that the proposed approach is superior to other approaches, and is efficient at improving the security and energy efficiency of visible light communication system. Enhancing Unsupervised Graph Few-shot Learning via Set Functions and Optimal Transport

Graph few-shot learning has garnered significant attention for its ability to rapidly adapt to downstream tasks with limited labeled data, sparking considerable interest among researchers. Recent advancements in graph few-shot learning models have exhibited superior performance across diverse applications. Despite their successes, several limitations still exist. First, existing models in the meta-training phase predominantly focus on instance-level features within tasks, neglecting crucial set-level features essential for distinguishing between different categories. Second, these models often utilize query sets directly on classifiers trained with support sets containing only a few labeled examples, overlooking potential distribution shifts between these sets and leading to suboptimal performance. Finally, previous models typically require necessitate abundant labeled data from base classes to extract transferable knowledge, which is typically infeasible in real-world scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a novel model named STAR, which leverages Set funcTions and optimAl tRansport for enhancing unsupervised graph few-shot learning. Specifically, STAR utilizes expressive set functions to obtain set-level features in an unsupervised manner and employs optimal transport principles to align the distributions of support and query sets, thereby mitigating distribution shift effects. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that STAR can capture more task-relevant information and enhance generalization capabilities.
