Emerging technologies in sixth generation (6G) of wireless communications, such as terahertz communication and ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output, present promising prospects. Despite the high data rate potential of millimeter wave communications, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in urban low altitude economy (LAE) environments are constrained by challenges such as signal attenuation and multipath interference. Specially, in urban environments, mmWave communication experiences significant attenuation due to buildings, owing to its short wavelength, which necessitates developing innovative approaches to improve the robustness of such communications in LAE networking. In this paper, we explore the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-carried intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to support low altitude mmWave communication. Specifically, we consider a typical urban low altitude communication scenario where a UAV-carried IRS establishes a line-of-sight (LoS) channel between the mobile users and a source user (SU) despite the presence of obstacles. Subsequently, we formulate an optimization problem aimed at maximizing the transmission rates and minimizing the energy consumption of the UAV by jointly optimizing phase shifts of the IRS and UAV trajectory. Given the non-convex nature of the problem and its high dynamics, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-based approach incorporating neural episodic control, long short-term memory, and an IRS phase shift control method to enhance the stability and accelerate the convergence. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively resolves the problem and surpasses other benchmark algorithms in various performances. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Divergent Projection Analysis for Unsupervised Dimensionality Reduction

Principal component analysis (PCA) has been extended to a series of classical methods in dimensionality reduction for unsu¬pervised learning. However, the differences among the projected data samples may not be sufficient by PCA, causing problems both in data visualization and recognition. Though some nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods have been proposed to preserve the samples’ differences, their nonlinear mappings hide the relationships among the data features, e.g., Isometric mapping (Isomap) and Locally Linear Embedding (LLE). In this paper, we propose a linear dimensionality reduction method, called Divergent Projection Analysis (DPA), to preserve the largest differences among the samples. Our DPA projects the sam¬ples into a low-dimensional space such that any two projected samples have a certain distance, resulting in solving a nonconvex optimization problem. The nonconvex problem is solved by the subgradient descent algorithm and particle swarm optimiza¬tion algorithm, and their solution qualities are compared in the experiments. Experiments on a synthetic dataset and three face recognition problems confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method compared with other state-of-the-art methods.

Aerial Secure Collaborative Communications under Eavesdropper Collusion in Low-altitude Economy: A Generative Swarm Intelligent Approach

The rapid development of the low-altitude economy (LAE) has significantly increased the utilization of autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs) in various applications, necessitating efficient and secure communication methods among AAV swarms. In this work, we aim to introduce distributed collaborative beamforming (DCB) into AAV swarms and handle the eavesdropper collusion by controlling the corresponding signal distributions. Specifically, we consider a two-way DCB-enabled aerial communication between two AAV swarms and construct these swarms as two AAV virtual antenna arrays. Then, we minimize the two-way known secrecy capacity and maximum sidelobe level to avoid information leakage from the known and unknown eavesdroppers, respectively. Simultaneously, we also minimize the energy consumption of AAVs when constructing virtual antenna arrays. Due to the conflicting relationships between secure performance and energy efficiency, we consider these objectives by formulating a multi-objective optimization problem, which is NP-hard and with a large number of decision variables. Accordingly, we design a novel generative swarm intelligence (GenSI) framework to solve the problem with less overhead, which contains a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE)-based generative method and a proposed powerful swarm intelligence algorithm. In this framework, CVAE can collect expert solutions obtained by the swarm intelligence algorithm in other environment states to explore characteristics and patterns, thereby directly generating high-quality initial solutions in new environment factors for the swarm intelligence algorithm to search solution space efficiently. Simulation results show that the proposed swarm intelligence algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art baseline algorithms, and the GenSI can achieve similar optimization results by using far fewer iterations than the ordinary swarm intelligence algorithm. A Unified Collaborative Representation Learning for Neural-Network based Recommender Systems

With the boosting of neural networks, recommendation methods become significantly improved by their powerful ability of prediction and inference. Existing neural-network based recommender systems (NN-RSs) usually first employ matrix embedding (ME) as a pre-process to learn users’ and items’ representations (latent vectors), then input these representations to a specific modified neural network framework to make accurate Top-k recommendations. Obviously, the performance of ME has a significant effect on RS models. However, most NN-RSs focus on accuracy by building representations from the direct user-item interactions (e.g., user-item rating matrix), while ignoring the underlying relatedness between users and items (e.g., users who rate the same ratings for the same items should be embedded into similar representations), which is an ideological disadvantage. On the other hand, ME models directly employ inner products as a default loss function metric that cannot project users and items into a proper latent space, which is a methodological disadvantage. In this paper, we propose a supervised collaborative representation learning model - Magnetic Metric Learning (MML) - to map users and items into a unified latent vector space, enhancing the representation learning for NN-RSs. Firstly, MML utilizes dual triplets to model not only the observed relationships between users and items, but also the underlying relationships between users as well as items to overcome the ideological disadvantage. Specifically, a modified metric-based dual loss function is proposed in MML to gather similar entities and disperse the dissimilar ones. With MML, we can easily compare all the relationships (user to user, item to item, user to item) according to the weighted metric, which overcomes the methodological disadvantage. Are Your Apps Accessible? A GCN-based Accessibility Checker for Low Vision Users

Context: Accessibility issues (e.g., small size and narrow interval) in mobile applications (apps) lead to obstacles for billions of low vision users in interacting with Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). Although GUI accessibility scanning tools exist, most of them perform rule-based check relying on complex GUI hierarchies. This might make them detect invisible redundant information, cannot handle small deviations, omit similar components, and is hard to extend. Objective: In this paper, we propose a novel approach, named ALVIN (Accessibility Checker for Low Vision), which represents the GUI as a graph and adopts the Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCN) to label inaccessible components. Method: ALVIN removes invisible views to prevent detecting redundancy and uses annotations from low vision users to handle small deviations. Also, the GCN model could consider the relations between GUI components, connecting similar components and reducing the possibility of omission. ALVIN only requires users to annotate the relevant dataset when detecting new kinds of issues. Results: Our experiments on 48 apps demonstrate the effectiveness of ALVIN, with precision of 83.5%, recall of 78.9%, and F1-score of 81.2%, outperforming baseline methods. In RQ2, the usefulness is verified through 20 issues submitted to open-source apps. The RQ3 also illustrates the GCN model is better than other models. Conclusion: To summarize, our proposed approach can effectively detect accessibility issues in GUIs for low vision users, thereby guiding developers in fixing them efficiently. Contrastive Fusion of Generative and Discriminative Lesion Maps for Weakly Supervised Medical Image Segmentation

Medical image segmentation is a crucial computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) procedure in various clinical applications. However, most existing methods rely on pixel-level annotations, which are costly and time-consuming. We propose a novel contrastive fusion model of generative and discriminative lesion maps for weakly supervised medical image segmentation to address this limitation. The generative lesion map is generated by a lesion region-guided cycle-consistent adversarial network (CCANet), and the discriminative lesion map is produced by a class-aware-based discriminative lesion localization network (DLLNet). CCANet and DLLNet share weights at the encoder layer, which contains skip connections and channel attention modules to enhance feature embedding. In order to fully utilize and integrate the generative and discriminative lesion maps, and improve the segmentation accuracy, we design a fusion method based on contrastive loss to jointly train CCANet and DLLNet. The final lesion segmentation result is obtained by applying dense conditional random fields (Dense CRF) to the fused lesion map. Extensive experiments on three benchmark medical image datasets show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on weakly supervised medical image segmentation, especially in datasets with few samples, validating the proposed model's good generalization ability and robustness in various medical image segmentation scenarios. Spirit distillation: A model compression method with multi-domain knowledge transfer

Recent applications pose requirements of both cross-domain knowledge transfer and model compression to machine learning models due to insufficient training data and limited computational resources. In this paper, we propose a new knowledge distillation model, named Spirit Distillation (SD), which is a model compression method with multidomain knowledge transfer. The compact student network mimics out a representation equivalent to the front part of the teacher network, through which the general knowledge can be transferred from the source domain (teacher) to the target domain (student). To further improve the robustness of the student, we extend SD to Enhanced Spirit Distillation (ESD) in exploiting a more comprehensive knowledge by introducing the proximity domain which is similar to the target domain for feature extraction. Results demonstrate that our method can boost mIOU and high-precision accuracy by 1.4% and 8.2% respectively with 78.2% segmentation variance, and can gain a precise compact network with only 41.8% FLOPs. Automatic Controversy Detection Based on Heterogeneous Signed Attributed Network and Deep Dual-Layer Self-Supervised Community Analysis

Controversial analysis entails identifying and scrutinizing contentious events or issues within a specific domain. Detecting controversy, particularly on social media, poses challenges due to the need to consider numerous contents and user interactions. Unlike previous work, rather than studying controversy on limited knowledge of the topic discussion, we introduce multidimensional and heterogeneous information to conduct a comprehensive evaluation. Our method to quantify controversy is based on heterogeneous signed attributed network. This framework constructs a comprehensive heterogeneous signed attributed network to integrate diverse semantic and structural information on social media, encompassing user, retweet, comment, summary, topic, sentiment information, and user attributes. We introduce a deep dual-layer self-supervised algorithm for community detection and controversial analysis within this network. We gauge controversy levels in hot events via community distinctions, betweenness centrality, and user representations. Extensive comparisons of state-of-the-art baseline approaches are performed. We find that existing methods shows instability on different datasets. Whereas our approach integrates the multidimensional features of topics and also takes into account various computational results, our method consistently yields stable results. Don’t Confuse! Redrawing GUI Navigation Flow in Mobile Apps for Visually Impaired Users

Mobile applications (apps) are integral to our daily lives, offering diverse services and functionalities. They enable sighted users to access information coherently in an extremely convenient manner. However, it remains unclear if visually impaired users, who rely solely on the screen readers (e.g., Talkback) to navigate and access app information, can do so in the correct and reasonable order. This may result in significant information bias and operational errors. Furthermore, in our preliminary exploration, we explained and clarified that the navigation sequence-related issues encountered by visually impaired users could be categorized into two types: unintuitive navigation sequence and unapparent focus switching. Considering these issues, in this work, we proposed a method named RGNF (Re-draw GUI Navigation Flow). It aimed to enhance the understandability and coherence of accessing the content of each component within the Graphical User Interface (GUI), together with assisting developers in creating well-designed GUI navigation flow (GNF). This method was inspired by the characteristics identified in our preliminary study, where visually impaired users expected navigation to be associated with close position and similar shape of GUI components that were read consecutively. Thus, our method relied on the principles derived from the Gestalt psychological model, aiming to group GUI components into different regions according to the laws of proximity and similarity, thereby redrawing the GNFs. To evaluate the effectiveness of our method, we calculated sequence similarity values before and after redrawing the GNF, and further employed the tools proposed by Alotaibi et al. to measure the reachability of GUI components. Our results demonstrated a substantial improvement in similarity (0.921) compared to the baseline (0.624), together with the reachability (90.31%) compared to the baseline GNF (74.35%). Multi-focus image fusion based on fully convolutional networks

We propose a multi-focus image fusion method, in which a fully convolutional network for focus detection(FD-FCN) is constructed. To obtain more precise focus detection maps, we propose to add skip layers in the network to make both detailed and abstract visual information available when using FD-FCN to generate maps. A new training dataset for the proposed network is constructed based on dataset CIFAR-10. The image fusion algorithm using FD-FCN contains three steps: focus maps are obtained using FD-FCN, decision map generation occurs by applying a morphological process on the focus maps, and image fusion occurs using a decision map. We carry out several sets of experiments, and both subjective and objective assessments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed fusion method to state-of-the-art algorithms.
