Interactive segmentation has recently been explored to effectively and efficiently harvest high-quality segmentation masks by iteratively incorporating user hints. While iterative in nature, most existing interactive segmentation methods tend to ignore the dynamics of successive interactions and take each interaction independently. We here propose to model iterative interactive image segmentation with a Markov decision process (MDP) and solve it with reinforcement learning (RL) where each voxel is treated as an agent. Considering the large exploration space for voxel-wise prediction and the dependence among neighboring voxels for the segmentation tasks, multi-agent reinforcement learning is adopted, where the voxel-level policy is shared among agents. Considering that boundary voxels are more important for segmentation, we further introduce a boundary-aware reward, which consists of a global reward in the form of relative cross-entropy gain, to update the policy in a constrained direction, and a boundary reward in the form of relative weight, to emphasize the correctness of boundary predictions. To combine the advantages of different types of interactions, i.e., simple and efficient for point-clicking, and stable and robust for scribbles, we propose a supervoxel-clicking based interaction design. Experimental results on four benchmark datasets have shown that the proposed method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-arts, with the advantage of fewer interactions, higher accuracy, and enhanced robustness. Heat Transfer Performance of Flat Micro-Heat Pipe with Sintered Multi-Size Copper Powder Wick

Flat Micro-Heat Pipe (FMHP) with sintered copper powder wick is a popular device for heat flux management of highly integrated electronic circuits. To this end, a Sintered Multi-size copper powder wick (SMW) is prepared, basing a Sintered Single-size copper powder wick (SSW). The evaporator and condenser section of the SMW is a doublelayer structure with two copper powder diameters to increase the evaporation and condensation rates inside the FMHP. The adiabatic section is a single-layer structure with single powder diameter to add a capillary gradient force in the liquid channel. Six SSWs with different copper powder diameters are prepared and tested to compare with SMW. The methanol pumping experiment is carried out to evaluate the capillary pressure of different wicks, and the surface temperature experiment is carried out to evaluate the thermal transfer performance of the FMHP with different wicks, respectively. The experimental results show that the liquid transfer time of the SMW is shortened 16.59% compared to the SSW. The dynamic response time constant of the SMW FMHP is decreased by 0.9 s , and the overall thermal resistance is reduced by 14.22%. The SMW can enhance the heat transfer performance of the FMHP. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Detecting the status of autonomous underwater vehicle, referred to hereinafter as an underwater target, is fundamental for successfully fulfilling cognition tasks or improving communication quality. In this article, we present a thorough study over the passive detection issue for multiple underwater targets emitting the linear frequency modulation signals. Specifically, hypothesis testing model, which comprises the signals received at the underwater detection node including periodic emission signals from the targets and additive noise, is firstly proposed for the practical scenarios. Then, the detection scheme has been investigated. Among this scheme, the behavior of the signals emitted by the underwater targets has been analyzed; and the primary aiming of the detection procedure, i.e., decision rule and its performance, has also been discussed and derived for the aforementioned scenarios. Towards the end, to confirm the advantages of our proposed studies, numerical simulation examples are carried out to examine the performance under different conditions.

Embedding-based retrieval methods construct vector indices to search for document representations that are most similar to the query representations. They are widely used in document retrieval due to low latency and decent recall performance. Recent research indicates that deep retrieval solutions offer better model quality, but are hindered by unacceptable serving latency and the inability to support document updates. In this paper, we aim to enhance the vector index with end-to-end deep generative models, leveraging the differentiable advantages of deep retrieval models while maintaining desirable serving efficiency. We propose Model-enhanced Vector Index (MEVI), a differentiable model-enhanced index empowered by a twin-tower representation model. MEVI leverages a Residual Quantization (RQ) codebook to bridge the sequence-to-sequence deep retrieval and embedding-based models. To substantially reduce the inference time, instead of decoding the unique document ids in long sequential steps, we first generate some semantic virtual cluster ids of candidate documents in a small number of steps, and then leverage the well-adapted embedding vectors to further perform a fine-grained search for the relevant documents in the candidate virtual clusters. We empirically show that our model achieves better performance on the commonly used academic benchmarks MSMARCO Passage and Natural Questions, with comparable serving latency to dense retrieval solutions.

The UNet architecture, which is widely used for biomedical image segmentation, has limitations like blurred feature maps and over- or under-segmented regions. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel network architecture called MACCoM (Multiple Attention and Convolutional Cross-Mixer) – an end-to-end depthwise encoder-decoder fully convolutional network designed for binary and multi-class biomedical image segmentation built upon deeperUNet. We proposed a multi-scope attention module (MSAM) that allows the model to attend to diverse scale features, preserving fine details and high-level semantic information thus useful at the encoder-decoder connection. As the depth increases, our proposed spatial multi-head attention (SMA) is added to facilitate inter-layer communication and information exchange, enabling the network to effectively capture long-range dependencies and global context. MACCoM is also equipped with a convolutional cross-mixer we proposed to enhance the feature extraction capability of the model. By incorporating these modules, we effectively combine semantically similar features and reduce artifacts during the early stages of training. Experimental results on 4 biomedical datasets crafted from 3 datasets of varying modalities consistently demonstrate that MACCoM outperforms or matches state-of-the-art baselines in the segmentation tasks. With Breast Ultrasound Image (BUSI), MACCoM recorded 99.06 % Jaccard, 77.58 % Dice, and 93.92 % Accuracy, while recording 99.50 %, 98.44 %, and 99.29 % respectively for Jaccard, Dice, and Accuracy on the Chest X-ray (CXR) images used. The Jaccard, Dice, and Accuracy for the High-Resolution Fundus (HRF) images are 95.77 %, 74.35 %, and 95.95 % respectively. The findings here highlight MACCoM's effectiveness in improving segmentation performance and its valuable potential in image analysis. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Recent advancements in CNNs for medical image segmentation have focused on the combination of CNN and Transformer architectures to capture both local and global features. However, challenges remain, such as effectively utilizing fused features at the encoder-decoder bottleneck and addressing blurred object edges in datasets. To tackle these issues, we introduce a multi-scale channel adaptive sensing module, enhancing the model's representational and perceptual capabilities by integrating multi-scale and channel-specific information. Additionally, we propose a cross-perception module and multi-scale segmentation head to improve global coordination and multi-scale information gathering. Experiments on the ACDC and Synapse datasets demonstrate our model's superiority.

The sea-surface wind fields are pivotal for studies in both oceanography and meteorology. However, the acquisition of ocean wind data is often challenged by practical constraints, especially near coasts, leading to significant data gaps. This paper introduces a two-stage approach that combines interpolation optimization with a residual network to improve satellite-derived sea-surface wind fields data. Initially, the Kriging interpolation method is employed to fill missing regions. Subsequently, a network structure similar to ResNet-18 is tailored to revise the interpolated data using buoy anemometer observations. By establishing a correlation model between the interpolated results and ground truth through supervised training, the approach ensures the interpolated results gravitate towards the actual measurements. The efficacy of the proposed model is corroborated through experimental visual analysis and error cure assessments.

Popular methods usually use a degradation model in a supervised way to learn a watermark removal model. However, it is true that reference images are difficult to obtain in the real world, as well as collected images by cameras suffer from noise. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose a perceptive self-supervised learning network for noisy image watermark removal (PSLNet) in this paper. PSLNet depends on a parallel network to remove noise and watermarks. The upper network uses task decomposition ideas to remove noise and watermarks in sequence. The lower network utilizes the degradation model idea to simultaneously remove noise and watermarks. Specifically, mentioned paired watermark images are obtained in a self-supervised way, and paired noisy images (i.e., noisy and reference images) are obtained in a supervised way. To enhance the clarity of obtained images, interacting two sub-networks and fusing obtained clean images are used to improve the effects of image watermark removal in terms of structural information and pixel enhancement. Taking into texture information account, a mixed loss uses obtained images and features to achieve a robust model of noisy image watermark removal. Comprehensive experiments show that our proposed method is very effective in comparison with popular convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for noisy image watermark removal. This paper focuses on the gridless direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation for data acquired by non-uniform linear arrays (NLAs) in automotive applications. Atomic norm minimization (ANM) is a promising gridless sparse recovery algorithm under the Toeplitz model and solved by convex relaxation, thus it is only applicable to uniform linear arrays (ULAs) with array manifolds having a Vandermonde structure. In automotive applications, it is essential to apply the gridless DoA estimation to NLAs with arbitrary geometry with efficiency. In this paper, a fast ANM-based gridless DoA estimation algorithm for NLAs is proposed, which employs the array manifold separation technique and the accelerated proximal gradient (APG) technique, making it applicable to NLAs without losing of efficiency. Simulation and measurement experiments on automotive multiple-input multiple-outpt (MIMO) radars demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Align, Perturb and Decouple: Toward Better Leverage of Difference Information for RSI Change Detection

Change detection is a widely adopted technique in remote sense imagery (RSI) analysis in the discovery of long-term geomorphic evolution. To highlight the areas of semantic changes, previous effort mostly pays attention to learning representative feature descriptors of a single image, while the difference information is either modeled with simple difference operations or implicitly embedded via feature interactions. Nevertheless, such difference modeling can be noisy since it suffers from non-semantic changes and lacks explicit guidance from image content or context. In this paper, we revisit the importance of feature difference for change detection in RSI, and propose a series of operations to fully exploit the difference information: Alignment, Perturbation and Decoupling (APD). Firstly, alignment leverages contextual similarity to compensate for the non-semantic difference in feature space. Next, a difference module trained with semantic-wise perturbation is adopted to learn more generalized change estimators, which reversely bootstraps feature extraction and prediction. Finally, a decoupled dual-decoder structure is designed to predict semantic changes in both content-aware and content-agnostic manners. Extensive experiments are conducted on benchmarks of LEVIR-CD, WHU-CD and DSIFN-CD, demonstrating our proposed operations bring significant improvement and achieve competitive results under similar comparative conditions.
