A modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed. Linear constraints in the PSO are added to satisfy the normalization conditions for different problems. A hybrid algorithm based on the modified PSO and combining forecasting is presented. Combining forecasting can improve the forecasting accuracy through combining different forecasting methods. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated through the prediction on the sunspots and the stocks data. Simulated results show that the hybrid algorithm can improve the forecasting accuracy to a great extent.

The accuracy of concrete strength inspection has a great influence on the safety evaluation of the building. In order to increase the accuracy, Fuzzy Neural Network (FNN) was built up to evaluate concrete stmngth: It takes full advantage of the characteristics of the common concrete testing methods: drill and rebound, and the abilities of FNN including automatic learning, generation and fuzzy logic inference. The experiment shows that the max relative error of the predicted results is 1.12%, which is satisfied with the requirements of the engineering. The method effieieatly maps the complex non-linear relationship between the drill values and the rebound values, and provides a efficient way for the concrete strength inspection and evaluation.

The gene section ordering on solving traveling salesman problems is analyzed by numerical experiments. Some improved crossover operations are presented. Several combinations of genetic operations are examined and the functions of these operations are analyzed. The essentiality of the ordering of the gene section and the significance of the evolutionary inversion operation are discussed. Some results and conclusions are obtained and given, which provide useful information for the implementation of the genetic operations for solving the traveling salesman problem.

Computational intelligence is the computational simulation of the bio-intelligence, which includes artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems and evolutionary computations. This article summarizes the state of the art in the field of simulated modeling of vibration systems using methods of computational intelligence, based on some relevant subjects and the authors' own research work. First, contributions to the applications of computational intelligence to the identification of nonlinear characteristics of packaging are reviewed. Subsequently, applications of the newly developed training algorithms for feedforward neural networks to the identification of restoring forces in multi-degree-of-freedom nonlinear systems are discussed. Finally, the neural-network-based method of model reduction for the dynamic simulation of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) using generalized Hebbian algorithm (GHA) and robust GHA is outlined. The prospects of the simulated modeling of vibration systems using techniques of computational intelligence are also indicated.

The objective of computer supported knowledge aided collaborative conceptual design (CSKACCD) is to aid group design activities semi-automatically or automatically with multidisciplinary knowledge. This paper presents a general distributed design system model to give a global view of CSKACCD, and then designs a constraint-based distributed knowledge representation model based on different constraints abstracted from the domain specific knowledge of the designing artifact. The Hybrid technology Multi-Threading project is a long-term study of the feasibility of combining several emerging technologies to reach 1 petaFLOPS within ten years. HTMT will combine high-speed superconductor processors, semiconductor memories with built-in processors, high-speed optical interconnects, and high-density holographic storage. While there are major challenges in all aspects of this project, those in processor architecture are the focus of this paper. Fundamental differences between RSFQ circuits and conventional semiconductor circuits, including a radical jump in clock speed, make today's processor design approaches inappropriate for HTMT. Sequential instruction dispatching, even within the lowest programming unit (a strand), will lead to unacceptably high latencies, hence poor performance. We propose alternative processor designs which use fine-grain synchronizations between individual instructions in order to avoid these bottlenecks.

Overlapping computation with communication is central to obtaining high performance on distributed-memory multiprocessors. This report explicates the overlapping capability of two distributed-memory multiprocessors: the EM-X and IBM SP-2. The well-known bitonic sorting algorithm is selected for experiments. Various message sizes are used to determine when, where, how much and why overlapping takes place. Experimental results indicate that both multiprocessors would yield up to 30% to 40% overlap of communication time when the message size is approximately 1K integers. EM-X is found to be message-size insensitive yielding high overlap for various message sizes, while SP-2 was effective for the window of message size 512 to 2K integers.
