The rapid advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) has made the industry a significant contributor to global carbon emissions. As the foundation of ICT, next-generation mobile communication networks aim to be more powerful and energy-efficient. However, optimizing energy efficiency in real networks is challenging due to large-scale, multi-layer control variables and the dynamic environment. This paper addresses the energy efficiency optimization problem from a network perspective by controlling cross-layer variables including both cell activation status and cell priority, to minimize overall network energy consumption while ensuring user quality-of-experience, which poses an NP-hard mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. To tackle this, we propose a non-cooperative game where each cell acts as a player, optimizing its activation status and reference signal transmission power (determining its priority). We show that the game is a potential game, guaranteeing the existence of Nash equilibrium and the convergence of simple distributed algorithms towards Nash equilibrium. We further show that the Nash equilibrium points of the game can (but not always) reach the global optimal energy efficiency. Simulation results show that our proposed method can reduce the total system cost (including both energy consumption cost and user experience loss) by up to 28% compared to existing methods in the literature. Moreover, the performance loss of our proposed method, compared to the global optimal solution, is less than 13.7%. In summary, this work offers a realistic network model, introduces a novel game-based method, and provides extensive performance evaluation, making a significant contribution to both industry and academia.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has the advantages of efficient spectrum utilization and low hardware cost. It is promising to be implemented in the fifth-generation-advanced (5G-A) and sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems, having the potential to be applied in intelligent applications requiring both communication and high-accurate sensing capabilities. As the fundamental technology of ISAC, ISAC signal directly impacts the performance of sensing and communication. This article systematically reviews the literature on ISAC signals from the perspective of mobile communication systems, including ISAC signal design, ISAC signal processing and ISAC signal optimization. We first review the ISAC signal design based on 5G, 5G-A and 6G mobile communication systems. Then, radar signal processing methods are reviewed for ISAC signals, mainly including the channel information matrix method, spectrum lines estimator method and super resolution method. In terms of signal optimization, we summarize peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) optimization, interference management, and adaptive signal optimization for ISAC signals. In this paper, we propose an Industrial Semantic Communications (ISC) framework to ensure efficient and in-telligent communication in Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) networks, and further apply the proposed framework to the task of tool wear monitoring. A semantic-aware tool wear monitoring network (TWM-Net) is designed to accurately identify the idling state from tool wear data, thus assisting the semantic data transmission process of the ISC framework. Then, a demo software system is implemented to verify the delay performance of the proposed ISC framework. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed ISC framework can facilitate the semantic information exchange between edge industrial system and cloud platform together with the deep compressed sensing method, and significantly reduce the amount of data transmissions in IIoT networks. Mobile edge caching (MEC) is a promising technique to improve the quality of service (QoS) for mobile users (MU) by bringing data to the network edge. However, optimizing the crucial QoS aspects of message freshness and service promptness, measured by age of information (AoI) and service delay, respectively, entails a tradeoff due to their competition for shared edge resources. This paper investigates this tradeoff by formulating their weighted sum minimization as a sequential decision-making problem, incorporating high-dimensional, discrete-valued, and linearly constrained design variables. First, to assess the feasibility of the considered problem, we characterize the corresponding achievable region by deriving its superset with the rate stability theorem and its subset with a novel stochastic policy, and develop a sufficient condition for the existence of solutions. Next, to efficiently solve this problem, we propose a mixed-order drift-plus-penalty algorithm by jointly considering the linear and quadratic Lyapunov drift and then optimizing them with dynamic programming (DP). Finally, by leveraging the Lyapunov optimization technique, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves an O(1/V) versus O(V) tradeoff for the average AoI and average service delay.

We introduce a new code for cosmological simulations, PHoToNs, which has features on performing massive cosmological simulations on heterogeneous high performance computer (HPC) and threads oriented programming. PHoToNs adopts a hybrid scheme to compute gravity force, with the conventional PM to compute the long-range force, the Tree algorithm to compute the short range force, and the direct summation PP to compute the gravity from very close particles. A self-similar space filling Peano-Hilbert curve is used to decompose computing domain. Threads programming is highly used to more flexibly manage the domain communication, PM calculation and synchronization, as well as Dual Tree Traversal on the CPU+MIC platform. The scalability of the PHoToNs performs well and the efficiency of PP kernel achieves 68.6% of peak performance on MIC and 74.4% on CPU platforms. We also test the accuracy of the code against the much used Gadget-2 in the community and found excellent agreement. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we investigate the safe task offloading and primary node selection in blockchain, digital twin (DT) and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) enabled Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Edge servers centers provide computing power for task processing for Mobile Vehicles (MVs), while blockchain can provide security guarantees for MVs during task offloading. Based on the above system, we propose a joint optimization scheme for vehicle task offloading decision and the Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) consensus process. Due to the large number of optimization variables and constraints, the problem becomes more complex. Traditional convex optimization and dynamic programming methods are difficult to effectively solve this problem. To address this issue, we propose a deep reinforcement learning based algorithm that utilizes Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). The experimental results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper outperforms the benchmark algorithm in terms of convergence and other aspects.

Golden grain: Building a secure and decentralized model marketplace for MLaaS

ML-as-a-service (MLaaS) becomes increasingly popular and revolutionizes the lives of people. A natural requirement for MLaaS is, however, to provide highly accurate prediction services. To achieve this, current MLaaS systems integrate and combine multiple well-trained models in their services. Yet, in reality, there is no easy way for MLaaS providers, especially for startups, to collect sufficiently well-trained models from individual developers, due to the lack of incentives. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by building up a model marketplace, called as Golden Grain, to facilitate model sharing, which enforces the fair model-money swapping process between individual developers and MLaaS providers. Specifically, we deploy the swapping process on the blockchain, and further introduce a blockchain-empowered model benchmarking process for transparently determining the model prices according to their authentic performances, so as to motivate the faithful contributions of well-trained models. Especially, to ease the blockchain overhead for model benchmarking, our marketplace carefully offloads the heavy computation and designs a secure off-chain on-chain interaction protocol based on a trusted execution environment (TEE), for ensuring both the integrity and authenticity of benchmarking. We implement a prototype of our Golden Grain on the Ethereum blockchain, and conduct extensive experiments using standard benchmark datasets to demonstrate the practically affordable performance of our design. © 2020, CC BY.

Superpixel segmentation aims at dividing the input image into some representative regions containing pixels with similar and consistent intrinsic properties, without any prior knowledge about the shape and size of each superpixel. In this paper, to alleviate the limitation of superpixel segmentation applied in practical industrial tasks that detailed boundaries are difficult to be kept, we regard each representative region with independent semantic information as a subspace, and correspondingly formulate superpixel segmentation as a subspace clustering problem to preserve more detailed content boundaries. We show that a simple integration of superpixel segmentation with the conventional subspace clustering does not effectively work due to the spatial correlation of the pixels within a superpixel, which may lead to boundary confusion and segmentation error when the correlation is ignored. Consequently, we devise a spatial regularization and propose a novel convex locality-constrained subspace clustering model that is able to constrain the spatial adjacent pixels with similar attributes to be clustered into a superpixel and generate the content-aware superpixels with more detailed boundaries. Finally, the proposed model is solved by an efficient alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) solver. Experiments on different standard datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves superior performance both quantitatively and qualitatively compared with some state-of-the-art methods. © 2020, CC BY-NC-ND.

Cluster analysis is important in scientific and industrial fields. In this study, we proposed a novel chaotic biogeography-based optimization (CBBO) method, and applied it in centroid-based clustering methods. The results over three types of simulation data showed that this proposed CBBO method gave better performance than chaotic particle swarm optimization, genetic algorithm, firefly algorithm, and quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization. In all, our CBBO method is effective in centroid-based clustering.
