The global context is crucial for the precise segmentation of remote sensing images. However, the large volumes and high spatial resolutions of remote sensing images make efficient analysis of the entire scene challenging for most convolutional neural network (CNN)-based methods. To address this issue, we propose to design an innovative framework for semantic segmentation of remote sensing images called Feature Enhancement Swin Transformer (FEST). Firstly, we utilize the Swin Transformer as the encoder and incorporates a Global Information Enhancement Model (GIEM) within each Swin Transformer block to reduce information loss and enable encoding of more accurate spatial information. Secondly, we introduce an enhanced decoding structure called Enhanced Feature Fusion Module (EFFM) with added enhanced channel and spatial attention modules to retain localized information while obtaining extensive contextual information. Finally, for loss calculation, we utilize the dice and cross-entropy loss to jointly supervise the model, aiming to achieve a competitive performance. We comprehensively evaluated FEST on the ISPRS-Vaihingen and Potsdam datasets. The results indicate that our approach has achieved significant improvements in semantic segmentation tasks compared to existing methods.

The primary objective of medical image segmentation is the isolation of pathological tissues and distinct organs from medical images, thereby assisting in medical diagnosis. The methods employed for medical image segmentation encompass convolutional neural networks and transformer-based methods. Although the self-attention mechanism in Transformers improves its capability to capture long-range dependencies, it have limitations in learning local (contextual) relationships between pixels. Some previous research has tried to solve this problem by incorporating convolutional layers into the encoder or decoder of transformers, but sometimes feature inconsistencies arise. To better extract local features from images using convolutional neural networks and to fuse low-resolution and high-resolution features from higher-level and lower features, we propose the Convolutional Attention Augmentation TransUNet (CAA-TransUNet) model. In our model, firstly, we propose a convolutional attention augmentation module that enhances both local and global features by suppressing irrelevant background information. Secondly, we have integrated attention gates into the skip connections to aggregate feature information from various stages of the encoder during the upsampling process. Finally, we employ the technique of aggregating the loss of multi-stage features to expedite convergence speed and enhance performance. The experimental results on three public datasets demonstrate that our proposed model significantly outperforms the baseline methods.

Most Seq2Seq neural model-based medical question summarization (MQS) systems have a severe mismatch between training and inference, i.e., exposure bias. However, this problem remains unexplored in the MQS task. To bridge this research gap and alleviate the problem of exposure bias, we propose a novel re-ranking training framework for MQS called Multi-view Contrastive Learning (MvCL). MvCL simultaneously considers the similarity scores between medical questions and candidate summaries as well as the average similarity scores between candidate summaries and other candidates within the same group, and utilizes contrastive learning to optimize the model’s ranking ability. Additionally, we propose a new multilevel inference approach to adapt to this training strategy. The approach first filters out candidate summaries that are dissimilar to the original medical question, and then selects the summary with the highest average similarity to other candidate summaries from the remaining candidates as the final output. We conducted extensive experiments, and the results demonstrate that our proposed MvCL framework achieves state-of-the-art results on the majority of evaluation metrics across four datasets. 1

Extracting buildings from remote sensing images using deep learning techniques is a widely applied and crucial task. Convolutional Neural networks (CNNs) adopt hierarchical feature representation, showcasing powerful capabilities in extracting local information but facing challenges in capturing global features. Transformers can address this limitation, but they perform poorly in extracting local features and significantly increase memory requirements and computational complexity. To overcome these challenges, we propose a method for building extraction from remote sensing images called LGDB-Net (Local-Global Dual-Branch Network), employing a dual-branch approach. Firstly, inspired by Swin Transformer, we designed GB-Former(Global Branch-Former) as the backbone network to model global information. We use a linear multi-head self-attention mechanism to reduce time and memory complexity while maintaining a large global receptive field. Additionally, we replace the traditional multi-layer perceptron with a convolution-enhanced multi-layer perceptron to improve channel feature representation, reduce model parameters, and enhance segmentation performance. Secondly, we use multiple Depth-wise Conv3×3 + LN (Layer Normalization) + GeLU (Gaussian Error Linear Unit) modules as the auxiliary branch for local detailed feature extraction. Finally, we adopt a multi-scale feature fusion strategy to integrate feature information from both branches. We conduct a series of experiments on three datasets: WHU, Massachusetts, and Inria. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method not only effectively improves segmentation accuracy with lower building omission and commission rates but also significantly reduces model parameters and computational complexity.

Discrete chaotic systems based on memristors exhibit excellent dynamical properties and are more straightforward to implement in hardware, making them highly suitable for generating cryptographic keystreams. However, most existing memristor-based chaotic systems rely on a single memristor. This paper introduces a novel discrete chaotic system employing dual memristors, named the 3D memristive cubic map with dual discrete memristors (3D-MCM). The 3D-MCM system demonstrates richer and more intricate dynamical behaviors compared to its single-memristor counterparts, as verified through bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponent spectra, and complexity analyses. Notably, the system exhibits coexisting attractors, substantially enhancing its dynamical complexity. Hardware implementation of the 3D-MCM attractors confirms its feasibility for industrial applications. To illustrate the system's potential in encryption tasks, this study integrates the quaternary-based permutation and dynamic emanating diffusion (QPDED-IE) scheme for image encryption with the *** results demonstrate that the QPDED-IE scheme based on the 3D-MCM exhibits strong diffusion and confusion properties, effectively resisting cryptanalytic attacks. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

The evolution of wireless communications and networking technologies has led significantly expansion of the dimensionality of network resources, which compels innovations in resource management. Graphs, a classic discrete mathematical tool, have long been widely used for resource management thanks to their capabilities to model complex relationships and interactions among elements in wireless networks. Recently, resource management over graphs embraces various advanced approaches of graph optimization and graph learning, aligned with evolving demands in future wireless networks. To better learn recent research landscape and explore important trends, this twopart survey provides a comprehensive overview for resource management via graph optimization and learning. Part I presents the fundamentals of graph optimization and provides a recent literature review of graph optimization for resource management in various wireless communication scenarios, including cellular networks, device-to-device communications, multi-hop networks, multi-antenna systems, edge caching and computing, and nonterrestrial networks. Part II gives the basics of graph learning and provides a state-of-the-art literature review of graph learning in wireless networks for addressing various resource management issues, covering power control, spectrum management, beamforming design, task scheduling, and aerial coverage planning. A discussion of technical challenges and future research directions is covered in Part II. © 2015 IEEE.

This two-part survey provides a comprehensive review of graph optimization and learning for resource management in wireless networks. In Part I, we introduced the fundamentals of graph optimization and provided a recent literature review of graph optimization for resource management in various wireless communication scenarios. In this part, we first present an overview of graph learning and introduce several modern graph neural network models. Then, a state-of-the-art literature review of graph learning for different resource management issues in wireless networks is provided, which covers power control, spectrum management, beamforming design, task scheduling, and aerial coverage planning. Furthermore, we discuss current technical challenges and future research directions of graph optimization and learning for resource management in future wireless networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Learning Cautiously in Federated Learning with Noisy and Heterogeneous Clients

Federated learning (FL) is a distributed framework for collaborative training with privacy guarantees. In real-world scenarios, clients may have Non-IID data (local class imbalance) with poor annotation quality (label noise). The coexistence of label noise and class imbalance in FL’s small local datasets renders conventional FL methods and noisy-label learning methods both ineffective. To address the challenges, we propose FEDCNI without using an additional clean proxy dataset. It includes a noise-resilient local solver and a robust global aggregator. For the local solver, we design a more robust prototypical noise detector to distinguish noisy samples. Further to reduce the negative impact brought by the noisy samples, we devise a curriculum pseudo labeling method and a denoise Mixup training strategy. For the global aggregator, we propose a switching re-weighted aggregation method tailored to different learning periods. Extensive experiments demonstrate our method can substantially outperform state-of-the-art solutions in mix-heterogeneous FL environments. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Eliciting Causal Abilities in Large Language Models for Reasoning Tasks

Prompt optimization automatically refines prompting expressions, unlocking the full potential of LLMs in downstream tasks. However, current prompt optimization methods are costly to train and lack sufficient interpretability. This paper proposes enhancing LLMs’ reasoning performance by eliciting their causal inference ability from prompting instructions to correct answers. Specifically, we introduce the Self-Causal Instruction Enhancement (SCIE) method, which enables LLMs to generate high-quality, low-quantity observational data, then estimates the causal effect based on these data, and ultimately generates instructions with the optimized causal effect. In SCIE, the instructions are treated as the treatment, and textual features are used to process natural language, establishing causal relationships through treatments between instructions and downstream tasks. Additionally, we propose applying Object-Relational (OR) principles, where the uncovered causal relationships are treated as the inheritable class across task objects, ensuring low-cost reusability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method effectively generates instructions that enhance reasoning performance with reduced training cost of prompts, leveraging interpretable textual features to provide actionable insights. Conventional federated learning (FL) coordinated by a central server focuses on training a global model and protecting the privacy of clients' training data by storing it locally. However, the statistical heterogeneity hinders the global model from adapting to the non-IID distributions among clients. Moreover, untrusted and unreliable central servers and malicious clients may compromise model integrity and availability, thus degrading the robustness of FL. To address these challenges, we present RobustPFL, a decentralized personalized federated learning (PFL) approach that combines α-based Layer-position Normalized Similarity (α-LNS) and local collaborative training to improve personalized performance while utilizing a blockchain-based committee mechanism to coordinate the aggregation process, thereby achieving high personalized accuracy and robustness. Extensive experiments show that our RobustPFL approach outperforms multiple algorithms, including Local training, FedAvg, FedReptile, Per-FedAvg, FedBN, and SPFL, on MNIST, CIFAR10, EMNIST, and N-BaIoT datasets in four non-IID settings. We also evaluate RobustPFL's effectiveness against attacks - poisoning attacks and free-riding attacks. Particularly, for three prevalent poisoning attacks (backdoor, label flipping, and model poisoning attacks), we compare non-defensive (FedAvg) and defensive (Krum, trimmed mean, Bulyan, FedBN, FLAME, and FangTrmean) methods with our proposed RobustPFL. The results show that our approach achieves significant defensive effects. © 2004-2012 IEEE.
