Implementing a 1GHz Four-Issue Out-of-Order Execution Microprocessor in a Standard Cell ASIC Methodology

This paper introduces the microarchitecture and physical implementation of the Godson-2E processor, which is a four-issue superscalar RISC processor that supports the 64-bit MIPS instruction set. The adoption of the aggressive out-of-order execution and memory hierarchy techniques help Godson-2E to achieve high performance. The Godson-2E processor has been physically designed in a 7-metal 90nm CMOS process using the cell-based methodology with some bitsliced manual placement and a number of crafted cells and macros. The processor can be run at 1GHz and achieves a SPEC CPU2000 rate higher than 500.

Virtual resource monitoring in cloud computing

Cloud computing is a new computing model. The resource monitoring tools are immature compared to traditional distributed computing and grid computing. In order to better monitor the virtual resource in cloud computing, a periodically and event-driven push （PEP） monitoring model is proposed. Taking advantage of the push and event-driven mechanism, the model can provide comparatively adequate information about usage and status of the resources. It can simplify the communication between Master and Work Nodes without missing the important issues happened during the push interval. Besides, we develop ＂mon＂ to make up for the deficiency of Libvirt in monitoring of virtual CPU and memory.

Moore's law continues to grant computer architects ever more transistors in the foreseeable future, and para-llelism is the key to continued performance scaling in modern microprocessors. In this paper, the achievements in our research project, which is supported by the National Basic Research 973 Program of China, on parallel architecture, are systematically presented. The innovative approaches and techniques to solve the significant problems in parallel architecture design are summarized, including architecture level optimization, compiler and language-supported technologies, reliability, power-performance efficient design, test and verification challenges, and platform building. Two prototype chips, a multi-heavy-core Godson-3 and a many-light-core Godson-T, are described to demonstrate the highly scalable and reconfigurable parallel architecture designs. We also present some of our achievements appearing in ISCA, MICRO, ISSCC, HPCA, PLDI, PACT, IJCAI, Hot Chips, DATE, IEEE Trans. Though many research groups have explored the design methodology of cluster system software stack, few works discuss what constitutes a good one. In this paper, we choose four criteria throughout the lifecycle of cluster system software stack to evaluate its design methodology, including code reusability, evolveability, adaptability and manageability. According to the four criteria, we have proposed a management service-based layered design methodology and built a complete cluster system software stack for both scientific and business computing. Our practices and evaluations show our design methodology has advantages over others in terms of the proposed criteria. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Huffman codes are being widely used as a very efficient technique for compressing data. To achieve high compressing ratio, some properties of encoding and decoding for canonical Huffman table are discussed. A study and implementation of the Huffman algorithm based on condensed Huffman table is studied. New condensed Huffman table could reduce the cost of the Huffman coding table. Compared with traditional Huffman coding table and other improved tables, the best advantages of new condensed Huffman table is that the space requirement is reduced significantly. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we presented a method to improve structural modeling based on conserved domain clusters and structure-anchored alignments. We first constructed a template library of structural clusters for all conserved sequence domains. Then, for each cluster, we built the profile using the structure and sequence information. Finally we use the profile and structural alignments as anchors to increase the alignment accuracy between a query and its templates. Our preliminary results show that this method can be used for the partial prediction for a majority of known protein sequences with better qualities. Copyright 2007 ACM.

To obtain the efficiency of DBMS, HadoopDB combines Hadoop and DBMS, and claims the superiority over Hadoop in terms of performance. However, the approach of HadoopDB is simply putting MapReduce onto unmodified single-machined DBMSs which has several obvious weaknesses. In essence, HadoopDB is a parallel DBMS with fault tolerance, which incurs unnecessary overhead due to the DBMS legacy. Instead of augmenting DBMS with Hadoop techniques, we propose a new system architecture integrating modified DBMS engines as a read-only execution layer into Hadoop, where DBMS plays a role of providing efficient readonly operators rather than managing the data. Besides the obtained efficiency from DBMS engine, there are other advantages. The modified DBMS engine is able to directly process data from the HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File system) files at the block level, which means that the data replication can be handled by HDFS naturally, and the blocklevel parallelism is easily achieved. The global index access mechanism is added according to the MapReduce paradigm. The data loading speed is also guaranteed by directly writing the data into HDFS with simplified logic. Experiments show that our system outperforms both original Hadoop and HadoopDB styled system. © 2010 IEEE.

computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is an emerging branch of learning science concerned with studying how people can learn together with the help of computers. As an indispensable ingredient, computer mediation evolves through couples of phases, e.g. centralized server, peer-to-peer network, grid computing. Nevertheless, with daily rising trend on requirement's dynamic changes in service, existing models fall short to respond on demand. Thus, in this paper, by taking advantage of cloud computing, we propose a feasible CSCL platform and the experiments show that it can not only fulfill the basic requirement of CSCL, but also respond to learner's dynamic need on demand. In database systems, disk I/O performance is usually the bottleneck of the whole query processing. Among many techniques, compression is one of the most important ones to reduce disk accesses so to improve system performance. RLE (Run-Length Encoding) is one light-weight compression algorithm which incurs negligible CPU cost. A lot of work show that, although RLE is one of the most effective compression techniques in column-oriented systems, it is very hard to use due to bad value locality in row-oriented systems where values from multiple attributes are stored in the same page. We propose CRLE (Column-based RLE), one compression algorithm to apply RLE to row-oriented data storage. On row-oriented storage page, CRLE can exploit value locality in individual column and encode values from the same column in run-length format. Experiments show that CRLE can lead to very good compression ratio and performance in spite of row-oriented data storage. © 2009 IEEE.

ETL （Extract-Transform-Load） usually includes three phases： extraction, transformation, and loading. In building data warehouse, it plays the role of data injection and is the most time-consuming activity. Thus it is necessary to improve the performance of ETL. In this paper, a new ETL approach, TEL （Transform-Extract-Load） is proposed. The TEL approach applies virtual tables to realize the transformation stage before extraction stage and loading stage, without data staging area or staging database which stores raw data extracted from each of the disparate source data systems. The TEL approach reduces the data transmission load, and improves the performance of query from access layers. Experimental results based on our proposed benchmarks show that the TEL approach is feasible and practical.
