Approximate computing, which trades off computation quality (e.g, accuracy) and computation efforts, has becoming a promising technique to improve performance for many mission-non-critical and error-tolerant applications. The computations in such applications usually exhibit superior value locality, i.e, computations performed by a function or code region are very likely to reproduce “similar” results. Reusing the similar results can bypass redundant computations, as long as “exact” results are not mandatory. However, conventional computation reuse techniques are less effective in approximate computing paradigm. The input values of two computation instances have to be identical to reuse one for another, hence “exact” in *** propose ACR, an approximate computation reuse framework, to enable computation reuse for approximate computing. ACR relaxes the exact matching requirement in inputs to some extent regulated by “similarity” quantification, thereby shifting the exact computation reuse paradigm to its approximate counterpart. We furthermore propose an input significance-aware similarity quantification scheme through statistical approaches. Experimental result shows ACR could effectively exploit the potential of computation reuse for approximate computing and reduce 47.6% computations on average for a set of approximate applications.

Automatic tuning of sparse matrix-vector multiplication on multicore clusters

To have good performance and scalability, parallel applications should be sophisticatedly optimized to exploit intra-node parallelism and reduce inter-node communication on multicore clusters. This paper investigates the automatic tuning of the sparse matrix-vector(Sp MV) multiplication kernel implemented in a partitioned global address space language, which supports a hybrid thread- and process-based communication layer for multicore systems. One-sided communication is used for inter-node data exchange, while intra-node communication uses a mix of process shared memory and multithreading. We develop performance models to facilitate selecting the best configuration of threads and processes hybridization as well as the best communication pattern for Sp MV. As a result, our tuned Sp MV in the hybrid runtime environment consumes less memory and reduces inter-node communication volume, without damaging the data locality. Experiments are conducted on 12 real sparse matrices. On 16-node Xeon and 8-node Opteron clusters, our tuned Sp MV kernel gets on average 1.4X and 1.5X improvement in performance over the well-optimized process-based message-passing implementation, respectively.

ETL （Extract-Transform-Load） usually includes three phases： extraction, transformation, and loading. In building data warehouse, it plays the role of data injection and is the most time-consuming activity. Thus it is necessary to improve the performance of ETL. In this paper, a new ETL approach, TEL （Transform-Extract-Load） is proposed. The TEL approach applies virtual tables to realize the transformation stage before extraction stage and loading stage, without data staging area or staging database which stores raw data extracted from each of the disparate source data systems. The TEL approach reduces the data transmission load, and improves the performance of query from access layers. Experimental results based on our proposed benchmarks show that the TEL approach is feasible and practical.

As the scaling of applications increases, the demand of main memory capacity increases in order to serve large working set. It is difficult for DRAM （dynamic random access memory） based memory system to satisfy the memory capacity requirement due to its limited scalability and high energy consumption. Compared to DRAM, PCM （phase change memory） has better scalability, lower energy leakage, and non-volatility. PCM memory systems have become a hot topic of academic and industrial research. However, PCM technology has the following three drawbacks： long write latency, limited write endurance, and high write energy, which raises challenges to its adoption in practice. This paper surveys architectural research work to optimize PCM memory systems. First, this paper introduces the background of PCM. Then, it surveys research efforts on PCM memory systems in performance optimization, lifetime improving, and energy saving in detail, respectively. This paper also compares and summarizes these techniques from multiple dimensions. Finally, it concludes these optimization techniques and discusses possible research directions of PCM memory systems in future.

Statistical Interconnect Crosstalk Noise Model and Analysis for Process Variations

When operating frequency is over several gigahertz, the effect of inductance plays an important role and should be included for accurate and speed crosstalk noise analysis. And for new generation IC(Integrated circuit) design tools, the crosstalk noise analysis tools should consider the influence of process variations. In this paper, we propose coupled RLC crosstalk noise distributed parameter model with capacitive load termination. And we develop the framework that how to use the crosstalk noise model for process variations. Our results show that compare with HSPICE, the critical data errors of proposed model are within 1% and the relative errors occurred between calculated values for process variations and HSPICE Monte Carlo simulation values are less than 5%. The key features of the new model include:(1) The impact of inductance on crosstalk noise is considered;(2) The model can be used for process variations analysis;(3) The model reflect the effects of load capacitance directly;(4) The numerical inversion of Laplace transform is introduced for improving speed. So the proposed model meets the needs of future IC design both in speed and accuracy.

In embedded Internet of Things(IOT) environment, there are the troubles such as complex background, illumination changes, shadows and other factors for detecting moving object, so we put forward a new detection service method through mixing Gaussian Mixture Model(GMM), edge detection service method and continuous frame difference method in this paper. In time domain, the new method uses GMM to model and updates the background. In spatial domain, it uses the hybrid detection service method which mixes edge detection service method, continuous frame difference method and GMM to get initial contour of moving object, and gets ultimate moving object. This method not only can well adapt to the illumination gradients and background disturbance occurred on scene, but also can well solve some problems such as inaccurate target detection, incomplete edge detection, cavitation and ghost which usually appears in traditional method. As experimental result showing, this method holds better real-time and robustness. It is not only easily implemented, but also can accurately detect moving object.

Refresh operations consume substantial energy and bandwidth in high-density DRAM memory. To cope with this issue, Fine-Grained Refresh (FGR) is recently proposed to eliminate unnecessary refresh operations caused by minor weak cells. Even JEDEC's DDR4 DRAM specification announces the support of FGR to make DRAM refresh more scalable. Unfortunately, we observe that the effectiveness of FGR is greatly confined by the procedure of refresh-oblivious device integration because all memory devices within a module have to be controlled and refreshed in a lockstep way after the step of assembly. In this work, we firstly propose to intelligently integrate the "compatible" devices through a pre-assembly testing and retention-aware matching method. Second, we reuse the reconfiguration structure from yield-oriented remapping mechanism in memory chips and propose Microfix to create a balanced distribution of retention time in memory banks through fine-grained row-address tuning. With this optimization architecture, RADAR, we can eliminate the refresh overhead of produced memory modules by 28% on average. © 2015 ACM.

Constructing Edge-Colored Graph for Heterogeneous Networks

In order to build a fault-tolerant network, heterogeneous facilities are arranged in the network to prevent homogeneous faults from causing serious damage. This paper uses edge-colored graph to investigate the features of a network topology which is survivable after a set of homogeneous devices malfunction. We propose an approach to designing such networks under arbitrary parameters. We also show that the proposed approach can be used to optimize inter-router connections in network-on-chip to reduce the additional consum!otion of energy and time delay.
