Atmospheric modeling is an essential issue in the study of climate change. However, due to the complicated algorithmic and communication models, scientists and researchers are facing tough challenges in finding efficient solutions to solve the atmospheric equations. In this paper, we accelerate a solver for the three-dimensional Euler atmospheric equations through reconfigurable data flow engines. We first propose a hybrid design that achieves efficient resource allocation and data reuse. Furthermore, through algorithmic offsetting, fast memory table, and customizable-precision arithmetic, we map a complex Euler kernel into a single FPGA chip, which can perform 956 floating point operations per cycle. In a 1U-chassis, our CPU-DFE unit with 8 FPGA chips is 18.5 times faster and 8.3 times more power efficient than a multicore system based on two 12-core Intel E5-2697 (Ivy Bridge) CPUs, and is 6.2 times faster and 5.2 times more power efficient than a hybrid unit equipped with two 12-core Intel E5-2697 (Ivy Bridge) CPUs and three Intel Xeon Phi 5120d (MIC) cards.

Occupants' comfort is the primary target in a building operation. However their efforts are often neglected and ruled out from traditional control strategies of energy-efficient building management systems. Occupant-engaged control strategies have recently attracted many research attentions and demonstrated great potentials for energy saving. With them, occupants' behavior is incorporated into the closed-loop control methods in which their initiatives actively contribute to building services and energy utility by explicitly expressing their preferences. This work proposes an occupant-engaged demand response (DR) strategy for building automation in which occupants are actively engaged to adapt their energy consumption in response to incentive opportunities designed by facility managers. A model-based study and a Nash-Equilibrium-based solution are provided to assist facility managers with the design of social incentive policies to promote occupant participation, along with the guarantee of lucrativeness for a DR event.

A multi-cluster tool is composed of a number of single-cluster tools linked by buffering modules. The capacity of a buffering module can be one or two. Aiming at finding an optimal one-wafer cyclic schedule, this work explores the effect of two-space buffering modules on the performance of a multi-cluster tool. The tool is modeled by a kind of Petri nets. The dynamic behavior of robot waiting and tasks, process modules, and buffers is well captured by the net model. With the model, this work shows that there is always a one-wafer cyclic schedule that reaches the lower bound of the cycle time of a process-dominant tool. Furthermore, a constant-time algorithm is revealed to find such a schedule for the first time for such multi-cluster tools. An illustrative example is given to show the application and power of this new method.

Energy efficiency is becoming an important issue in networks. Although some research works have been devoted to this topic, only a little attention has been paid to the stability of the network equipped with the energy conservation mechanisms. In fact, we find that the stability of networks can be undermined in the worst case if it isn't considered with care by the energy conservation *** this paper, we propose an energy-efficient scheduling protocol which can guarantee the stability of the network in all cases. We start by building a new model which can be used to verify the stability of the network equipped with the energy conservation mechanisms. With this model, we transform the packet scheduling problem to a Job Shop Scheduling problem. For this problem, we propose a time-stamp based work-conserving scheduling algorithm - G-FSA. Compared with existing methods, this scheduling algorithm guarantees a tighter bound on the make span of the jobs. Then, we integrate G-FSA with a time partition approach to generate our energy-efficient packet scheduling protocol. It is proved that the obtained protocol can guarantee the stability of network in all cases. And its approximation ratio in terms of energy efficiency can be bounded by O((1+ )) for any > 0, where is an input parameter depending on the hardware infrastructure. Typically, 1

The world faces an energy problem. Oil supply is gradually running out. Its use is polluting the planet with greenhouse gas. Most alternative energy sources also pose some environmental problems. Hence the efficient use of energy must be an integral part of any solution to them. Whenever possible, one must use advanced control engines and technologies to achieve the highest energy efficiency. In Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry, much research has identified a number of energy-saving control methods. This paper proposes a novel method to optimizing H.264 decoding on multi-core processors by exploiting color component level parallelism. Compared with sequential decoding and macro-block level parallelism, the proposed method achieves optimal balance between performance and scalability. The optimization scheme is mapped on a 64-bit MIPS multi-core processor, and is evaluated with standard test streams. Experimental results show that the method improves video decoding performance by 2 times on average without increasing memory consumption, and could be easily applied on other multi-core processors. © 2013 IEEE.

Cloud computing is a recently developed new technology for complex systems with massive service sharing, which is different from the resource sharing of the grid computing systems. In a cloud environment, service requests from users go through numerous provider specific steps from the instant it is submitted to when the service is fully delivered. Quality modeling and analysis of clouds are not easy tasks because of the complexity of the provisioning mechanism and the dynamic cloud environment. This study proposes an analytical modelbased approach for quality evaluation of Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud and consider expected request completion time, rejection probability, and system overhead rate as key QoS metrics. It also features with the modeling of different warming and cooling strategies of machines and the ability to identify the optimal balance between system overhead and performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Building simulation models play a vital role in optimal building climate control, energy audit, fault detection and diagnosis, continuous commissioning, and planning. Real system parameters are often unknown or partially unknown and need to be identified through historical data, which are currently acquired by heuristically designed experiments. Without quality sensor data, model calibration is prone to fail, even if the calibration algorithm is appropriate. In this paper, we propose a Fisher-information-matrix (FIM)-based metric to examine the sensor data measurements and how their quality is related to the model calibration quality. It aims to provide quantitative guidance in the calibration cycle of a whole building model that takes as many variables as possible into consideration for the sake of accuracy. Our concerned model is based on well-known physical laws and tries to avoid simplification, thereby leading to a highly discontinuous system with model switches due to the seasonal or daily variation and other reasons. Such a model is implemented in the form of a software package. Hence, no explicit mathematical expression can be given. A key technical challenge is that the complexity of the model prohibits the analytical derivation of FIM, while the numeric calculation is sensitive to sensor noise and model switches. We, hence, propose to adopt an automatic differentiation method, which exploits the operator overload feature of object oriented programming language, for robust numerical FIM calculation. © 2013 IEEE.

Optimizing MPI Alltoall communications in multicore clusters

MPI Alltoall is an important collective operation. In multicore clusters, many processes run in a node. On the one hand, shared memory can be adopted to optimize Alltoall communications of small messages by leader-based schemes. However, as these schemes adopt a fixed number of leader processes, the optimal performance can't be obtained for all small messages. On the other hand, processes within a node contend for the same network resource. In Alltoall communications of large messages, many synchronization messages are used. Nevertheless, the contention makes their latency increase many times and the synchronization overhead can't be ingored. To solve these problems, two optimizations are presented. For small messages, the PLP method adopts changeable numbers of leader processes. For large messages, the LSS method reduces the number of synchronization messages from 3N to 2√N. The evaluations prove two methods. For small messages, the PLP method always obtains optimal performance. For large messages, the LSS method brings almost constant improvement percentage. The performance is improved by 25% for 32 KB and 64 KB messages.
