It is very challenging to schedule a multi-cluster tool for it needs to coordinate the activities of multiple robots. This paper studies one-wafer cyclic scheduling for multi-cluster tools whose bottleneck cluster tool is process-bound. A Petri net model is developed to describe the system. Based on the model, it is shown that, for any multi-cluster tool whose bottleneck cluster tool is process-bound, there is always a one-wafer cyclic schedule. Then, a method is presented to find the minimal cycle time and the optimal one-wafer cyclic schedule. The method requires only simple calculation. An example illustrates the application and effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2013 IEEE.

This work intends to schedule a dual-arm cluster tool for the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process with wafer residency time constraints. ALD is a typical wafer revisiting process. Based on the analysis of system properties, a novel scheduling strategy called modified 1-wafer cyclic scheduling is derived. With this strategy, necessary and sufficient schedulability conditions are established. If schedulable, scheduling algorithms are presented to obtain a feasible and optimal schedule. By the proposed method, a schedule can be found by just simple calculation. An illustrative example is given to show the application of the proposed approach. © 2013 IEEE.

Behavior management and performance evaluation are two significant issues in the design and operation of automated manufacturing systems (AMS). The former constrains their dynamics so as to avoid improper behavior and eliminate downtime, while the latter aims to evaluate cycle time. Although abundant research has been conducted on each issue independently, researchers rarely address both in a correlative way. Without accurate and prompt guidance to route parts, it is difficult for an AMS to manage the production process in an optimal manner. In the paradigm of Petri nets, we show that it is crucial to optimize certain local priorities for the sake of cycle time minimization or throughput maximization. Without making radical changes to the system structure, our method can well design some control parameters in order to meet system performance requirement. An algorithm of polynomial complexity is presented to derive supervisory controllers, if existing, to improve system performance. © 2013 IEEE.

Ensuring nonblockingness remains challenging for automated manufacturing systems (AMS) owing to their discrete event dynamics. Both scalability and maximal permissiveness are essential for the synthesis and implementation of their centralized supervisors. Inspired by the divide and conquer philosophy, this work proposes a partition methodology and distributed control technique for large scale AMS. They are represented as interconnected and overlapping subsystems sharing some common components in terms of buffers. For each subsystem, a local supervisor is designed based on its local behavior and neighboring information only. Generalizing the existing results, we develop a condition under which the control law via decomposition promises the maximal permissiveness. Buffer capacities are well designed for the sake of their decomposition into multiple overlapping subsystems. Theoretical results are developed to characterize the behavior compatibility among local controllers. An experimental study illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2013 IEEE.

Word segmentation has been shown helpful for Chinese-to-English machine translation (MT), yet the way different segmentation strategies affect MT is poorly understood. In this paper, we focus on comparing different segmentation strategies in terms of machine translation quality. Our empirical study covers both English-to-Chinese and Chinese-to-English translation for the first time. Our results show the necessity of word segmentation depends on the translation direction. After comparing two types of segmentation strategies with associated linguistic resources, we demonstrate that optimizing segmentation itself does not guarantee better MT performance, and segmentation strategy choice is not the key to improve MT. Instead, we discover that linguistical resources such as segmented corpora or the dictionaries that segmentation tools rely on actually determine how word segmentation affects machine translation. Based on these findings, we propose an empirical approach that directly optimize dictionary with respect to the MT task for word segmenter, providing a BLEU score improvement of 1.30. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

With economic development, a great amount of hazardous material is shipped in the transport network every day. Hazardous material transportation is well known for its high potential risk. An accident can cause very serious economic damage and will have a negative impact on public health and the environment over the long term. Transporting hazardous materials on special lanes can reduce the risk. However, a lane reservation strategy may worsen traffic conditions for other vehicles. This paper investigates a hazardous material transportation problem with lane reservation. The problem lies in how to choose lanes to be reserved in the network and select the path for each hazardous material shipment from the reserved lanes. The goal is to obtain the best compromise between the impact on normal traffic and the transportation risk. A multiobjective integer programming model is presented for the new problem. Then, an algorithm is developed based on the ε -constraint method and a fuzzy-logic-based approach. Pareto optimal solutions are obtained by the former, and a preferred solution is selected by the fuzzy-logic-based approach. Computational results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm using an instance based on a real network topology and randomly generated instances.

As the semiconductor industry advances to nano-technology points, Network on Chip (NoC) components are becoming vulnerable to errors during the system operation. Consequently, fault-tolerant techniques for NoC are needed to achieve high reliability. In this paper, we present a fault-tolerant routing method to tolerate faulty routers in a two-dimension (2D) mesh-based NoC. With this method, the system can have a multi-router fault-tolerant capability and the routing path can be dynamically reconfigured to support different situations caused by faulty routers in NoC. Fault-tolerance capability and system performance of the proposed method are evaluated through analysis and simulations. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed method can enhance the reliability of system and offer considerable fault-tolerance capability. © 2013 by Binary Information Press.

As the only method to study long-term climate trend and to predict potential climate risk, climate modeling is becoming a key research topic among governments and research organizations. One of the most essential and challenging components in climate modeling is the atmospheric model. To cover high resolution in climate simulation scenarios, developers have to face the challenges from billions of mesh points and extremely complex algorithms. Shallow Water Equations (SWEs) are a set of conservation laws that perform most of the essential characteristics of the atmosphere. The study of SWEs can serve as the starting point for understanding the dynamic behavior of the global atmosphere. We choose cubed-sphere mesh as the computational mesh for its better load balance in pole regions over other meshes such as the latitude-longitude mesh. The cubed-sphere mesh is obtained by mapping a cube to the surface of the sphere. The computational domain is then the six patches, each of which is covered with N × N mesh points to be calculated. When written in local coordinates, SWEs have an identical expression on the six patches, that is ∂Q/∂t + 1/Λ ∂(ΛF 1 )/∂x 1 + 1/Λ ∂(ΛF 1 )/∂z 2 + S=0, (1) where (x 1 , x 2 ) ∈ [-π/4, π/4] are the local coordinates, Q = (h, hu 1 , hu 2 ) T is the prognostic variable, F i = u i Q (i = 1, 2) are the convective fluxes, S is the source term. Spatially discretized with a cell-centered finite volume method and integrated with a second-order accurate TVD Runge-Kutta method, SWE solvers are transferred to the computation of a 13-point upwind stencil that exhibits a diamond shape. To get the prognostic components (h, hu 1 and hu 2 ) of the central point, its neighboring 12 points need to be accessed. The stencil kernel includes at least 434 ADD/SUB operations, 570 multiplications, 99 divisions. The high arithmetic density of the SWEs algorithm makes it difficult to implement one kernel into the resource-limited FPGA card. I

Heterogeneous multi-core processors have strong potential for performance improvement, energy efficiency and area efficiency, compared to the homogeneous multi-core processors. The present methods of execution migration for heterogeneous multi-core processor suffer in efficiency, cost, compatibility, or programmability. In this paper, we propose a HW/SW code sign migration method based on binary-instrumentation. Our method takes full advantage of the shared-ISA. It enhances the performance of heterogeneous chip multiprocessor with low HW/SW cost. And it's not required to modify source codes or compile system. The experiment results show that the efficiency of our method is 3.29 times of kernel simulation. © 2013 IEEE.

A Dependability Model for TMR system

Much research has been done on the dependability evaluation of computer systems. However, much of this is gone no further than study of the fault coverage of such systems, with little focus on the relationship between fault coverage and overall system dependability. In this paper, a Markovian dependability model for triple-modular-redundancy (TMR) system is presented. Having fully considered the effects of fault coverage, working time, and constant failure rate of single module on the dependability of the target TMR system, the model is built based on the stepwise degradation strategy. Through the model, the relationship between the fault coverage and the dependability of the system is determined. What is more, the dependability of the system can be dynamically and precisely predicted at any given time with the fault coverage set. This will be of much benefit for the dependability evaluation and improvement, and be helpful for the system design and maintenance.
