Surface electromyography (sEMG) signal is a physiological electrical signal produced by muscle contraction. Different gestures can be effectively recognized from the characteristics of the sEMG signal. Currently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in sEMG gesture recognition systems due to their capabilities in acquiring spatial features of sEMG signals. However, these classical CNNs are inefficient in extracting temporal correlation that resides in the time serials of sEMG signals, which is definitely important for gesture recognition. To overcome such a drawback of traditional CNN-based gesture recognition methods, we propose a multichannel hybrid deep learning model for gesture recognition by combining the multichannel CNNs with a gated recurrent unit (GRU). Specifically, we use multiple CNNs to preprocess the original multichannel EMG signals in a one-by-one manner to obtain the spatial features in the current observing window. The outputs of the multiple CNNs are concatenated and fed to a temporal-feature extracting module, which is designed by cascading a GRU with an attention mechanism. Through the GRU, the temporal features of successive signal frames can be established, while the attention mechanism is introduced to further focus on the key information in recognizing the gestures, which is beneficial to improve the robustness and accuracy of the model. Experiments show that the recognition accuracy of the proposed method reaches 97.6% and 96.7% on the Ninapro DB2 and Ninapro DB5 datasets, respectively. Compared with the classical CNN method, the performance improvement is 2.9% and xx% higher than that of the traditona CNN model, respectively.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-invasive detection technique that effectively gathers information about subsurface materials. In tunneling projects, GPR can provide a fast and accurate forecast of the geological conditions in front of tunnel boring, which provides an important reference basis for tunnel construction. Currently, the interpretation of GPR images relies heavily on manual expertise, resulting in low efficiency and minimal automation. This creates an urgent need for effective and accurate identification of poor geological conditions depicted in radar images. In this study, we present the GPR-YOLOv5 model, which is designed to detect unfavorable geologic features ahead of the tunnel face from GPR images. We enhance this model with the CA attention mechanism, GSConv module, ghostC3 module, and the VariFocal loss function to improve decoding accuracy while minimizing computational load. Additionally, we integrate this algorithm with established modern object detection techniques, and our experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness.

A Systematic Literature Review of Robust Federated Learning: Issues, Solutions, and Future Research Directions

Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising paradigm for training machine learning models across distributed devices while preserving their data privacy. However, the robustness of FL models against adversarial data and model attacks, noisy updates, and label-flipped data issues remain a critical concern. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review using the PRISMA framework to comprehensively analyze existing research on robust FL. Through a rigorous selection process using six key databases (ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, Springer, Web of Science, and Scopus), we identify and categorize 244 studies into eight themes of ensuring robustness in FL: objective regularization, optimizer modification, differential privacy employment, additional dataset requirement and decentralization orchestration, manifold, client selection, new aggregation algorithms, and aggregation hyperparameter tuning. We synthesize the findings from these themes, highlighting the various approaches and their potential gaps proposed to enhance the robustness of FL models. Furthermore, we discuss future research directions, focusing on the potential of hybrid approaches, ensemble techniques, and adaptive mechanisms for addressing the challenges associated with robust FL. This review not only provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in robust FL but also serves as a roadmap for researchers and practitioners seeking to advance the field and develop more robust and resilient FL systems.

In the field of mechanical manufacturing, rolling bearings are important core components. To achieve stable rotational operation, improving diagnostic accuracy has become an urgent issue. In this paper, a hybrid fault diagnosis method is proposed, which combines attention and convolutional neural network and introduces Savitzky-Golay filter, called Savitzky-Golay Convolutional Attention network (SGCA-Net). The method adopts a dual-branch structure for rolling bearing fault diagnosis, which can effectively eliminate noise, and combines attention mechanism and convolutional neural network to perform feature learning on data. The experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately identify various faults, and has high accuracy and robustness.

Local feature detection and description play an important role in many computer vision tasks, which are designed to detect and describe keypoints in any scene and any downstream task. Data-driven local feature learning methods need to rely on pixel-level correspondence for training. However, a vast number of existing approaches ignored the semantic information on which humans rely to describe image pixels. In addition, it is not feasible to enhance generic scene keypoints detection and description simply by using traditional common semantic segmentation models because they can only recognize a limited number of coarse-grained object classes. In this paper, we propose SAMFeat to introduce SAM (segment anything model), a foundation model trained on 11 million images, as a teacher to guide local feature learning. SAMFeat learns additional semantic information brought by SAM and thus is inspired by higher performance even with limited training samples. To do so, first, we construct an auxiliary task of Attention-weighted Semantic Relation Distillation (ASRD), which adaptively distillates feature relations with category-agnostic semantic information learned by the SAM encoder into a local feature learning network, to improve local feature description using semantic discrimination. Second, we develop a technique called Weakly Supervised Contrastive Learning Based on Semantic Grouping (WSC), which utilizes semantic groupings derived from SAM as weakly supervised signals, to optimize the metric space of local descriptors. Third, we design an Edge Attention Guidance (EAG) to further improve the accuracy of local feature detection and description by prompting the network to pay more attention to the edge region guided by SAM. SAMFeat’s performance on various tasks such as image matching on HPatches, and long-term visual localization on Aachen Day-Night showcases its superiority over previous local features. Internet of Things (IoT) reliability evaluation contributes to the sustainable computing and enhanced stability of the network. Previous algorithms usually evaluate the reliability of IoT by enumenating the states of nodes and networks, which are difficult to handle IoT with hundreds of nodes because the computational cost. In this paper, a novel algorithm, TMCRA, is proposed to evaluate the reliability of IoT in complex network environment, which consider both coverage and connectivity. For coverage, TMCRA employs the Confident information Coverage (CIC) model to divide the target area into independent grids and calculates the coverage rate. In terms of connectivity, TMCRA forming the Virtual Backbone network (VBN) based on two proposed methods: TMA and MGIN, and evaluate connectivity by analyzing the VBN rather than the whole network. The TMA and MGIN are two algorithms for constructing Minimum Connected Dominant Sets (MCDS), which are suitable for different scale networks. Finally, based on the data of coverage and connectivity, TMCRA utilizes tensors for the unified modeling and representation of network structure, and calculates IoT reliability based on the tensors. Simulations are carried out for various sizes of IoT to show the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed approach in reliability evaluation. © 2016 IEEE.

Encoding only the task-related information from the raw data, i.e., disentangled representation learning, can greatly contribute to the robustness and generalizability of models. Although significant advances have been made by regularizing the information in representations with information theory, two major challenges remain: 1) the representation compression inevitably leads to performance drop;2) the disentanglement constraints on representations are in complicated optimization. To these issues, we introduce Bayesian networks with transmitted information to formulate the interaction among input and representations during disentanglement. Building upon this framework, we propose DisTIB (Transmitted information Bottleneck for Disentangled representation learning), a novel objective that navigates the balance between information compression and preservation. We employ variational inference to derive a tractable estimation for DisTIB. This estimation can be simply optimized via standard gradient descent with a reparameterization trick. Moreover, we theoretically prove that DisTIB can achieve optimal disentanglement, underscoring its superior efficacy. To solidify our claims, we conduct extensive experiments on various downstream tasks to demonstrate the appealing efficacy of DisTIB and validate our theoretical analyses. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG), by integrating external knowledge with large language models (LLMs), has become a common practice to alleviate LLMs’ hallucination problem. The performance of RAG, however, depends on the capability of the adopted information retriever to a large extent. Specifically, a good information retriever can manage to obtain the most useful information from the external knowledge, which will then enhance the quality of generated content from LLMs and vice versa. Since the vanilla RAG will always leverage the retrieved information to assist with LLMs’ content generation despite of its usefulness, when combined with a retriever of limited capacity, therefore, the vanilla RAG will not benefit LLMs’ content generation sometimes but introduce additional noise, having a negative impact on the final performance. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel adaptive RAG method which first uses LLMs to determine the usefulness of the retrieved information and then let LLMs to generate content on their own without the retrieved information if it is useless. Experimental results on four datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive RAG method with information retrievers of various capabilities, improving the performance of the vanilla RAG by an obvious margin.

AsyncSC: An Asynchronous Sidechain for Multi-Domain Data Exchange in Internet of Things

Sidechain techniques improve blockchain scalability and interoperability, providing decentralized exchange and cross-chain collaboration solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) data across various domains. However, current state-of-the-art (SOTA) schemes for IoT multi-domain data exchange are constrained by the need for synchronous networks, hindering efficient cross-chain interactions in discontinuous networks and leading to suboptimal data exchange. In this paper, we propose AsyncSC, a novel asynchronous sidechain construction. It employs a committee to provide Cross-Blockchain as a Service (C-BaaS) for data exchange in multi-domain IoT. To fulfill the need for asynchronous and efficient data exchange, we combine the ideas of aggregate signatures and verifiable delay functions to devise a novel cryptographic primitive called delayed aggregate signature (DAS), which constructs asynchronous cross-chain proofs (ACPs) that ensure the security of cross-chain interactions. To ensure the consistency of asynchronous transactions, we propose a multilevel buffered transaction pool that guarantees the transaction sequencing. We analyze and prove the security of AsyncSC, simulate an asynchronous communication environment, and conduct a comprehensive evaluation. The results show that AsyncSC outperforms SOTA schemes, improving throughput by an average of 1.21 to 3.96 times, reducing transaction latency by 59.76% to 83.61%, and maintaining comparable resource overhead.
