Reliability analysis for a dynamic k-out-of-n system with thermal balance control

Thermal failures, often caused by localized high temperatures, are a pervasive and critical issue in system operations, significantly impacting reliability and performance. Optimizing the connection locations in dynamic systems presents a promising and effective measure to mitigate these failures. By strategically managing the spatial distribution of heat, it is possible to reduce localized high temperatures and enhance overall system reliability. However, this approach has been largely overlooked in existing research, leaving a gap in addressing thermal imbalance effectively. This study proposes a novel balance measure to quantify thermal balance. Compared to existing balancing systems, this is the first time that the spatial uniformity of performance distribution is considered. The balance measure can help the system maintain thermal balance while meeting dynamic demands, thereby reducing thermal failures and improving system reliability. In addition, the thermal balance was incorporated for the first time in studies of dynamic k-out-of-n models with a failure threshold modeled by a random process. To address the system's complexity, we develop a reliability assessment method based on Monte Carlo simulation and solve a redundancy allocation problem to minimize system volume while meeting reliability constraints. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, showcasing its practical applicability and impact. © 2025

In the active distribution network including photovoltaic, energy storage and charging stations, the anti-island protection after fault of the transmission line will cut out the renewable energy sources (RESs), and the RESs will be connected to the grid after the successful line coincidence. This practice will result in RES outages and distribution network power supply interruption, failing to fully utilize the temporary island operation capabilities of new sources and loads. Therefore, a coordinated control method for fault recovery of distribution network with photovoltaic-storage-charging station adapted to line reclosing is proposed. First, the isolated island operation scheme of photovoltaic-storage-charging station during line reclosing is developed, and the power sources and loads matching method is proposed. The power balance scheme is determined according to the mode of load importance and load-weighted maximum power conservation. Second, during the islanding operation, the control mode of the inverter-type DG in the photovoltaic-storage-charging station is switched to virtual synchronous machine (VSG) control to give it the capability of short-term islanding operation. Third, after the fault is cleared, the circuit breaker near the main network side recloses by checking no voltage, the circuit breaker near the distribution network side recloses by checking synchronous, and reliable synchronization with the voltage of the main network side is realized through the active control of the photovoltaic-storage-charging station, reducing the impact of the impulse current on the new energy power source. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed fault recovery coordination strategy is verified by MATLAB/Simulink simulation examples.

Bi-level coordinated operation strategy of an active distribution system with load aggregators

Load aggregator (LA) is an effective form of managing multiple distributed energy sources on the user side. With the increase of emerging market players such as LAs, it is of great significance to realize the coordinated optimization of multiple entities and improve the whole economy of the distribution system. In this paper, a bi-level coordinated optimization model for distribution system operator (DSO) with multiple LAs is constructed. At the upper level, the DSO participates in the upstream energy market representing its internal load and multiple LAs, considering the power flow constraints of the distribution network. At the lower level, each LA maximizes the consumer surplus. The Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) condition is used to deal with the lower level and transform the bi-level model into mathematical programming with equilibrium constraints (MPEC). Furthermore, the nonlinear variables in the model are linearized by Fortuny-Amat transformation and strong duality condition. Finally, the MPEC problem is transformed into a single mixed-integer linear programming model. It is indicated that compared with taking LA as a fixed load, DSO can guide the power consumption behavior of LA by setting reasonable prices, ensuring the economic benefits of each LA while improving the economy of the distribution system. The case studies verified the effectiveness of the proposed bi-level scheduling model.

Research on optimal heat input parameter for TIG welding of thin plate 5083 aluminum alloy

Heat input represents a critical process parameter that significantly influences the quality of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. In this study, a comprehensive investigation of heat input effects on the welding quality of thin-gauge aluminum alloy was conducted through integrated theoretical analysis and experimental validation. The research established an optimal heat input range of 296–321 J/mm for 3 mm thick 5083 aluminum alloy plates in TIG welding applications, within which welded joints demonstrated minimal defect formation and superior mechanical performance. Both numerical simulations and experimental results revealed a distinct non-monotonic relationship between heat input and joint properties: when operating below the optimal range, progressive increases in heat input resulted in corresponding improvements in fusion characteristics and mechanical properties. Conversely, exceeding the optimal range led to progressive grain coarsening within the weld microstructure, accompanied by measurable degradation in key mechanical properties including tensile strength and hardness. © The Author(s) 2025.

Frequency-constrained Co-planning of Generation and Energy Storage with High-penetration Renewable Energy

Large-scale renewable energy integration decreases the system inertia and restricts frequency regulation. To maintain the frequency stability, allocating adequate frequency-support sources poses a critical challenge to planners. In this context, we propose a frequency-constrained coordination planning model of thermal units, wind farms, and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to provide satisfactory frequency supports. Firstly, a modified multi-machine system frequency response (MSFR) model that accounts for the dynamic responses from both synchronous generators and grid-connected inverters is constructed with preset power-headroom. Secondly, the rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF) and frequency response power are deduced to construct frequency constraints. A data-driven piecewise linearization (DDPWL) method based on hyperplane fitting and data classification is applied to linearize the highly nonlinear frequency response power. Thirdly, frequency constraints are inserted into our planning model, while the unit commitment based on the coordinated operation of the thermal-hydro-wind-BESS hybrid system is implemented. At last, the proposed model is applied to the IEEE RTS-79 test system. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our co-planning model to keep the frequency stability.

Motion control of thrust system for shield tunneling machine

The thrust hydraulic system of the prototype shield machine with pressure and flow compound control scheme was introduced. The experimental system integrated with proportional valves for study was designed. Dynamics modeling of multi-cylinder thrust system and synchronous control design were accomplished. The simulation of the synchronization motion control system was completed in AMESim and Matlab/Simulink software environments. The experiment was conducted by means of master/slave PID with dead band compensating flow and conventional PID regulating pressure. The experimental results show that the proposed thrust hydraulic system and its control strategy can meet the requirements of tunneling in motion and posture control for the shield machine, keeping the non-synchronous error within ±3 mm.

The synchronous tracking control problem of a hydraulic parallel manipulator with six degrees of freedom (DOF) is complicated since the inclusion of hydraulic elements increases the order of the *** solve this problem,cascade control method with an inner/outer-loop control structure is used,which masks the hydraulic dynamics with the inner-loop so that the designed controller takes into account of both the mechanical dynamics and the hydraulic dynamics of the ***,a cross-coupling control approach is introduced to the synchronous tracking control of the *** position synchronization error is developed by considering motion synchronization between each actuator joint and its adjacent ones based on the synchronous ***,with the feedback of both position error and synchronization error,the tracking is proven to guarantee that both the position errors and synchronization errors asymptotically converge to ***,the effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by the experimental results performed with a 6-DOF hydraulic parallel manipulator.
