The rapid development of multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) has positioned visual storytelling as a crucial area in content creation. However, existing models often struggle to maintain temporal, spatial, and narrative coherence across image sequences and frequently lack the depth and engagement of human-authored stories. To address these challenges, we propose Story with Large Language and Vision Assistant (StoryLLaVA), a novel framework for enhancing visual storytelling. Our approach introduces a Topic-Driven Narrative Optimizer (TDNO) that improves both the training data and MLLM models by integrating image descriptions, topic generation, and GPT-4-based refinements. Furthermore, we employ a preference-based ranked story sampling method that aligns model outputs with human storytelling preferences through positive-negative pairing. These two phases of the framework differ in their training methods: the former uses supervised fine-tuning, while the latter incorporates reinforcement learning with positive and negative sample pairs. Experimental results demonstrate that StoryLLaVA outperforms current models in visual relevance, coherence, and fluency, with LLM-based evaluations confirming the generation of richer and more engaging narratives. Adaptive Weighting Push-SUM for Decentralized Optimization with Statistical Diversity

Statistical diversity is a property of data distribution and can hinder the optimization of a decentralized network. However, the theoretical limitations of the Push-SUM protocol reduce the performance in handling the statistical diversity of optimization algorithms based on it. In this paper, we theoretically and empirically reduce the negative impact of statistical diversity on decentralized optimization using the Push-SUM protocol. Specifically, we propose the Adaptive Weighting Push-SUM protocol, a theoretical generalization of the original Push-SUM protocol where the latter is a special case of the former. Our theoretical analysis shows that, with sufficient communication, the upper bound on the consensus distance for the new protocol reduces to O(1N), whereas it remains at O(1) for the Push-SUM protocol. We adopt SGD and Momentum SGD on the new protocol and prove that the convergence rate of these two algorithms to statistical diversity is O(NT) on the new protocol, while it is O(NdT) on the Push-SUM protocol, where d is the parameter size of the training model. To address statistical diversity in practical applications of the new protocol, we develop the Moreau weighting method for its generalized weight matrix definition. This method, derived from the Moreau envelope, is an approximate optimization of the distance penalty of the Moreau envelope. We verify that the Adaptive Weighting Push-SUM protocol is practically more efficient than the Push-SUM protocol via deep learning experiments. © 2014 IEEE.

Wetland Vegetation Species Classification Using Optical and SAR Remote Sensing Images: A Case Study of Chongming Island, Shanghai,China

Mudflat vegetation plays a crucial role in the ecological function of wetland environment, and obtaining its fine spatial distribution is of great significance for wetland protection and management. Remote sensing techniques can realize the rapid extraction of wetland vegetation over a large area. However, the imaging of optical sensors is easily restricted by weather conditions, and the backscattered information reflected by Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) images is easily disturbed by many factors. Although both data sources have been applied in wetland vegetation classification, there is a lack of comparative study on how the selection of data sources affects the classification effect. This study takes the vegetation of the tidal flat wetland in Chongming Island, Shanghai, China, in 2019,as the research subject. A total of 22 optical feature parameters and 11 SAR feature parameters were extracted from the optical data source(Sentinel-2) and SAR data source(Sentinel-1), respectively. The performance of optical and SAR data and their feature parameters in wetland vegetation classification was quantitatively compared and analyzed by different feature combinations. Furthermore, by simulating the scenario of missing optical images, the impact of optical image missing on vegetation classification accuracy and the compensatory effect of integrating SAR data were revealed. Results show that: 1) under the same classification algorithm, the Overall Accuracy(OA) of the combined use of optical and SAR images was the highest, reaching 95.50%. The OA of using only optical images was slightly lower, while using only SAR images yields the lowest accuracy, but still achieved 86.48%. 2) Compared to using the spectral reflectance of optical data and the backscattering coefficient of SAR data directly, the constructed optical and SAR feature parameters contributed to improving classification accuracy. The conventional Cohen's distribution can't meet the requirement of additive noises jamming signals high-performance denoising under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratio, it is necessary to integrate the metaplectic transform for non-stationary signal fractional domain time-frequency analysis. In this paper, we embark on blending time-frequency operators and coordinate operator fractionizations to formulate the definition of the joint fractionizations metaplectic Wigner distribution (JFMWD), based on which we integrate the generalized metaplectic convolution to address the unified representation issue of the convolution type of metaplectic Cohen's distribution (CMCD), whose special cases and essential properties are also derived. We blend Wiener filter principle and fractional domain filter mechanism of the metaplectic transform to design the least-squares adaptive filter method in the JFMWD domain, giving birth to the least-squares adaptive filter-based CMCD whose kernel function can be adjusted with the input signal automatically to achieve the minimum mean-square error (MSE) denoising in Wigner distribution domain. We discuss the optimal symplectic matrices selection strategy of the proposed adaptive CMCD through the minimum MSE minimization modeling and solving. Some examples are also carried out to demonstrate that the proposed filtering method outperforms some state-of-the-arts including the classical Gaussian filter, the Cohen's distribution filtering methods with fixed kernel functions, the classical Wiener filter, the adaptive generalized linear canonical convolution-based filtering method, the adaptive Cohen's distribution filtering method, the adaptive JFMWD-based Cohen's distribution filtering method, and the adaptive generalized metaplectic convolution-based Cohen's distribution filtering method in noise suppression. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Aspect-Level Sentiment Classification of Consumer Reviews Utilizing BERT and Category-Aware Multi-Head Attention

In recent years, the explosive growth of user-generated review texts has underscored the academic and societal significance of sentiment analysis. Although deep learning has achieved remarkable progress in this field, existing aspect-based sentiment classification (ABSC) methods face challenges in capturing the dynamic nature of sentiment categories. Furthermore, these methods often lack explicit modeling of category information, limiting their ability to adapt attention distributions based on sentiment categories. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a BERT-based model with a category-aware multi-head attention mechanism. The model introduces an aspect projection layer that maps aspect word embeddings into a feature space aligned with the context, thereby enhancing interaction between aspect words and the surrounding text. Additionally, a category-aware multi-head attention mechanism combines category weights and dynamic content weights to effectively fuse sentiment category information. This design significantly improves the model’s ability to capture sentiment features of multiple categories. Experimental evaluations on SemEval public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques, and ablation studies further confirm the effectiveness of its design. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Adaptive disentangled target representation for unsupervised domain adaptation in remote sensing segmentation

Due to the significant differences between the source and target domains, semantic segmentation models for remote sensing images trained on the source domain often struggle to generalize effectively to new target domains, leading to performance degradation. Most solutions disentangle features into domain-invariant features shared by both domains and domain-specific features unique to each domain, relying primarily on the domain-invariant features for model construction and inference. However, during this process, critical domain-specific features as essential information are often discarded as noise, leading to a reduction in segmentation accuracy. To address these issues, this study proposes an unsupervised domain adaptation, called ChameleonRS. ChameleonRS separates the domain-invariant features and the domain-specific features by disentanglement learning, and introduces a multi-level feature alignment module to enhance the representation of domain-invariant features. More importantly, it aligns predictions based on domain-invariant features with those based on fused invariant and specific features using contrastive learning, effectively capturing target-specific features. This study explores two cross-domain semantic segmentation tasks: (I) Geographic location variation. (II) Geographic location and imaging mode variation. Results show that under setting (I), ChameleonRS outperforms the state-of-the-art method by 4.79% in Intersection over Union (IoU) and 6.51% in the F1 score. Under setting (II), it achieves improvements of 4.46% and 4.82% in IoU and F1 score. Results demonstrate the superiority and adaptability of ChameleonRS under varying geographical and imaging conditions, effectively mitigating the generalization issues caused by distribution differences, and thereby promoting the development and application of remote sensing technologies in practical scenarios. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The existing μ-Singular Value Decomposition (μ-SVD) denoising algorithm is capable of extracting gear fault information under strong noise conditions. However, this algorithm is only applicable to two-dimensional real-valued data and lacks a mechanism for implementing Automatic Rank Determination (ARD) in high-dimensional data. In this paper, a Bayesian and Tensor treatment of μ-SVD is employed to enable ARD. To further investigate the impact of the Lagrange multiplier μ on the proposed μ-variational Bayesian (μ-VB) algorithm, we examine its performance from both static and dynamic perspectives. Simulation results demonstrate that the μ-VB algorithm achieves ARD and performs well in noise reduction. Further the μ-VB algorithm performs better in wireless communication and linear image coding across numerical domains, tensor sizes, orthogonal factors, and μ settings. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Salix-Leaf: Find Main Veins of Signal Clusters for Practical Parallel Decoding

Parallel decoding of backscatter improves communication throughput by enabling concurrent transmission of backscatter tags. In practical applications of parallel decoding, it is extremely difficult to distinguish collided signals in superclusters where multiple signal clusters overlap. Existing methods are usually effective for superclusters with uniformly distributed signals. Nevertheless, there are many more scenarios in which signals in superclusters tend to gather unevenly, and existing methods cannot work. Such uneven clustering of signals occurs due to the following two possible causes: (1) signal-strengthdifferences (SSDs) among tags;or (2) cluster drifting (CD) driven by interferences from other objects within communication environments. This paper proposes a novel scheme called SalixLeaf, which aims to identify the main veins of signal clusters to address this problem of superclusters with unevenly distributed signals. Salix-Leaf identifies the main vein of each signal cluster for fine-grained clustering so that the direction of the main veins can be used to verify the accuracy of clustering. In addition, SalixLeaf employs a supercluster decomposer that divides signals into different segments for clustering analysis, enhancing robustness and practicability. Experimental results show that Salix-Leaf achieves a 1.2-fold increase in throughput and a 25% reduction in bit error rate (BER) compared to the state-of-the-art. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

LLM Knows Geometry Better than Algebra: Numerical Understanding of LLM-Based Agents in A Trading Arena

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have significantly improved performance in natural language processing tasks. However, their ability to generalize to dynamic, unseen tasks, particularly in numerical reasoning, remains a challenge. Existing benchmarks mainly evaluate LLMs on problems with predefined optimal solutions, which may not align with real-world scenarios where clear answers are absent. To bridge this gap, we design the Agent Trading Arena, a virtual numerical game simulating complex economic systems through zero-sum games, where agents invest in stock portfolios. Our experiments reveal that LLMs, including GPT-4o, struggle with algebraic reasoning when dealing with plain-text stock data, often focusing on local details rather than global trends. In contrast, LLMs perform significantly better with geometric reasoning when presented with visual data, such as scatter plots or K-line charts, suggesting that visual representations enhance numerical reasoning. This capability is further improved by incorporating the reflection module, which aids in the analysis and interpretation of complex data. We validate our findings on NASDAQ STOCK dataset, where LLMs demonstrate stronger reasoning with visual data compared to text.
