Manipulating the active species and improving the structural stabilization of sulfur-containing catalysts during the OER process remain a tremendous challenge. Herein, we constructed NiO/NiS 2 and Fe−NiO/NiS 2 as catalyst models to study the effect of Fe doping. As expected, Fe−NiO/NiS 2 exhibits a low overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . The accumulation of hydroxyl groups on the surface of materials after Fe doping can promote the formation of highly active NiOOH at a lower OER potential. Moreover, we investigated the level of corrosion of M−S bonds and compared the stability variation of M−S bonds with Fe at different locations. Interestingly, Fe bonded with S in the bulk as the sacrificial agent can alleviate the oxidation corrosion of partial Ni−S bonds and thus endow Fe−NiO/NiS 2 long-term durability. This work could motivate the community to focus more on resolving the corrosion of sulfur-containing materials.

Oriented synthesis of transition metal sulfides (TMSs) with controlled compositions and crystal structures has long been promising for electronic devices and energy applications. Liquid-phase cation exchange (LCE) is a well-studied route by varying the compositions. However, achieving crystal structure selectivity is still a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate gas-phase cation exchange (GCE), which can induce a specific topological transformation (TT), for the synthesis of versatile TMSs with identified cubic or hexagonal crystal structures. The parallel six-sided subunit (PSS), a new descriptor, is defined to describe the substitution of cations and the transition of the anion sublattice. Under this principle, the band gap of targeted TMSs can be tailored. Using the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution as an example, the optimal hydrogen evolution rate of a zinc-cadmium sulfide (ZCS4) is determined to be 11.59 mmol h −1 g −1 , showing a 36.2-fold improvement over CdS.

Real-Time Fine-Grained Air Quality Sensing Networks in Smart City: Design, Implementation and Optimization

—Driven by the increasingly serious air pollution problem, the monitoring of air quality has gained much attention in both theoretical studies and practical implementations. In this paper, we present the architecture, implementation and optimization of our own air quality sensing system, which provides real-time and fine-grained air quality map of the monitored area. As the major component, the optimization problem of our system is studied in detail. Our objective is to minimize the average joint error of the established real-time air quality map, which involves data inference for the unmeasured data values. A deep Q-learning solution has been proposed for the power control problem to reasonably plan the sensing tasks of the power-limited sensing devices online. A genetic algorithm has been designed for the location selection problem to efficiently find the suitable locations to deploy limited number of sensing devices. The performance of the proposed solutions are evaluated by simulations, showing a significant performance gain when adopting both strategies. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The frequent directions (FD) technique is a deterministic approach for online sketching that has many applications in machine learning. The conventional FD is a heuristic procedure that often outputs rank deficient matrices. To overcome the rank deficiency problem, we propose a new sketching strategy called robust frequent directions (RFD) by introducing a regularization term. RFD can be derived from an optimization problem. It updates the sketch matrix and the regularization term adaptively and jointly. RFD reduces the approximation error of FD without increasing the computational cost. We also apply RFD to online learning and propose an effective hyperparameter-free online Newton algorithm. We derive a regret bound for our online Newton algorithm based on RFD, which guarantees the robustness of the algorithm. The experimental studies demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art second order online learning algorithms.

An analytical solution is undertaken to describe the wave-induced flow field and the surge motion of a permeable platform structure with fuzzy controllers in an oceanic *** the design procedure of the controller,a parallel distributed compensation（PDC） scheme is utilized to construct a global fuzzy logic controller by blending all local state feedback controllers.A stability analysis is carried out for a real structure system by using Lyapunov *** corresponding boundary value problems are then incorporated into scattering and radiation *** are analytically solved,based on separation of variables,to obtain series solutions in terms of the harmonic incident wave motion and surge *** dependence of the wave-induced flow field and its resonant frequency on wave characteristics and structure properties including platform width,thickness and mass has been thus drawn with a parametric *** which mathematical models are applied for the wave-induced displacement of the surge motion.A nonlinearly inverted pendulum system is employed to demonstrate that the controller tuned by swarm intelligence method can not only stabilize the nonlinear system,but has the robustness against external disturbance.

Three dimensional simulation of internal wave attractors in the Luzon Strait

Internal waves propagate along wave beams that are inclined with respect to the horizontal plane. It is conjectured that the internal waves generated in the Luzon Strait may be confined between the double ridges in the strait and concentrate to a closed trajectory, the so-called internal wave attractor, due to the reflection of wave beams from the lateral boundaries, sea surface and bottom. This work carried out two experiments using a three dimensional non-hydrostatic general circulation model, MITgcm, to investigate the possibility that the ridges in the Lnzon Strait allows for internal wave attractors. Baroclinic current in both of the experiments demonstrate the forming of ring-like patterns in some section around 20° and 21°N, indicating that the development of the internal wave attractors are allowed in the Luzon Strait. The different resolutions and initial conditions in the two experiments also reveal that the internal-wave-attractor phenomenon is robust in this region.

A comparison of the CMIP5 models on the historical simulation of the upper ocean heat content in the South China Sea

Seventeen models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5（CMIP5） activity are compared on their historical simulation of the South China Sea（SCS） ocean heat content（OHC） in the upper 300 m. Ishii＇s temperature data, based on the World Ocean database 2005（WOD05） and World Ocean Atlas 2005（WOA05）, is used to assess the model performance by comparing the spatial patterns of seasonal OHC anomaly（OHCa） climatology, OHC climatology, monthly OHCa climatology, and interannual variability of OHCa. The spatial patterns in Ishii＇s data set show that the seasonal SCS OHCa climatology, both in winter and summer, is strongly affected by the wind stress and the current circulations in the SCS and its neighboring areas. However, the CMIP5 models present rather different spatial patterns and only a few models properly capture the dominant features in Ishii＇s pattern. Among them, GFDL-ESM2 G is of the best performance. The SCS OHC climatology in the upper 300 m varies greatly in different models. Most of them are much greater than those calculated from Ishii＇s data. However, the monthly OHCa climatology in each of the 17 CMIP5 models yields similar variation and magnitude as that in Ishii＇s. As for the interannual variability, the standard deviations of the OHCa time series in most of the models are somewhat larger than those in Ishii＇s. The correlation between the interannual time series of Ishii＇s OHCa and that from each of the 17 models is not satisfactory. Among them, BCC-CSM1.1 has the highest correlation to Ishii＇s, with a coefficient of about 0.6.

Inter-comparison of seasonal variability and nonlinear trend between AERONET aerosol optical depth and PM10 mass concentrations in Hong Kong

Here we used Empirical Mode Decomposition （EMD） method to study seasonal variability and nonlinear trend of corrected AERONET Aerosol Optical Depth （AOD/Hi） and corrected PM10 mass concentrations （PMmxf（RH）） in Hong Kong during 2005-2011. AODPrli is highly correlated with PMI0xf（RH） in semi-annual and annual time scales （with correlation coefficient 0.67 for semi-annual and 0.79 for annual components, 95% confidence interval）. On the semi-annual scale, both AOD/Hi and PM10xf（RH） can capture the two maxima in March and October, respectively, with much stronger amplitude in March proba- bly due to the long-range transport of dust storm. On the annual cycle, the AOD/Hi and PMI0xf（RH）, which are negatively correlated with the precipitation and solar radiation, vary coherently with the maxima in February. This annual peak occurs about one month earlier than the first peak of the semi-annual variability in March, but with only half amplitude. During 2005-2011, both AOD/Hi and PM10xf（RH） exhibit the pronounced decreasing trend with the mean rate of 14 gg m-3 per year for PM10xf（RH）, which reflects the significant effects of the air pollution control policy in Hong Kong during the past decade. The nonlinear trend analysis indicates that the decreasing of PM10xf（RH） is slower than that of AOD/Hi when the AOD/Hi is less than 0.44 but becomes faster when the AOD/Hi exceeds 0.44. These results illustrate that the AERONET AOD can be used quantitatively to estimate local air-quality variability on the semi-annual, annual, and long-term trend time scales.
