This paper investigates the limitations of the widely adopted softmax cross-entropy loss in incremental learning problems. Specifically, we highlight how the shift-invariant property of this loss function can lead to multiple optimal solutions and imbalanced weights across different tasks, which exacerbates catastrophic forgetting. To address these issues, we propose two key modifications to the objective function: (1) regularizing or replacing the original joint distillation loss with a summation of task-specific distillation losses, and/or (2) utilizing a shift-sensitive prediction loss function, such as the binary cross-entropy loss. Numerical experiments validate the effectiveness of these proposals, demonstrating improved prediction accuracy and a significant reduction in forgetting. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Multivariate time series forecasting is very important for many applications. Many studies have been conducted for accurate and interpretable prediction methods. However, existing methods either cannot take both times series and covariates into consideration, lacking of interpretability, or ignore global trends across multivariate time series. In this paper, we aim to solve these issues. To this end, we propose a new model named TEDGE for accurate and interpretable time series prediction. In this model, we extract global trends hidden across multivariate times series to improve prediction accuracy. Meanwhile, we utilize a deep recurrent model with attention mechanism to find long-and short-term sequential patterns hidden in individual time series with interpretability. We conduct experiments on several datasets to evaluate the proposed models performance. Results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed model.

With the high mortality rate for the cases of malignant tumors, the discovery and early treatment of cancer is critical to improving the 5-year survival rate of cancer. The biggest challenge in control and prevention is how to detect tumors as early as possible, so that the most effective means can be used for treatment. With the help of the WOS database, researchers found that liquid biopsy, genetic material/protein expression and computer imaging play an important role in cancer detection. Through analysis of the history and current status of cancer detection technology development, this paper also aims to provide guidance for the clinical practice of current cancer screening and provide inspiration for future technological development.

The multiplex network has attracted wide attention because it can better describe the various relationships in the real world, and the duplex network is a special two-layer form of it. The purpose of this research focuses on introducing new entropy-based measures for multiplex network, especially duplex network. The new measure called Interactive entropy in duplex network (IE) is based on information entropy, a key concept of information theory. The rapid advancement of science has underscored the importance of collaboration among scientists. While many studies have explored the structure of collaboration networks, there is a lack of comprehensive quantitative research on the temporal patterns of these collaborations. This study addresses this gap by analyzing temporal scientific collaboration networks in physics, spanning from 1960 to 2021, using complex network theories and methods. By constructing five-year temporal collaborative networks and employing metrics such as network diameter, shortest path, and clustering coefficient, this research reveals an increase in connectivity and small-world characteristics over time. Additionally, community detection highlights a shift towards specialized collaboration patterns and increased cross-community interactions. The study also uncovers growing centrality and social stratification within the research system, with the "rich club" phenomenon indicating strong and dynamic collaborations among highly connected scientists. Temporal analysis shows that while ultra-high connectivity scientists engage in fluctuating relationships, medium-high connectivity scientists maintain more stable collaborations. These findings provide insights into the evolution of collaborative behaviors and inform science policy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Computationally Efficient Approximations for Matrix-based Rényi's Entropy

The recently developed matrix-based Rényi's αorder entropy enables measurement of information in data simply using the eigenspectrum of symmetric positive semi-definite (PSD) matrices in reproducing kernel Hilbert space, without estimation of the underlying data distribution. This intriguing property makes this new information measurement widely adopted in multiple statistical inference and learning tasks. However, the computation of such quantity involves the trace operator on a PSD matrix G to power α (i.e., tr(Gα)), with a normal complexity of nearly O(n3), which severely hampers its practical usage when the number of samples (i.e., n) is large. In this work, we present computationally efficient approximations to this new entropy functional that can reduce its complexity to even significantly less than O(n2). To this end, we leverage the recent progress on Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra, developing Taylor, Chebyshev and Lanczos approximations to tr(Gα) for arbitrary values of α by converting it into a matrix-vector multiplication problem. We also establish the connection between the matrix-based Rényi's entropy and PSD matrix approximation, which enables exploiting both clustering and block low-rank structure of G to further reduce the computational cost. We theoretically provide approximation accuracy guarantees and illustrate the properties for different approximations. Large-scale experimental evaluations on both synthetic and real-world data corroborate our theoretical findings, showing promising speedup with negligible loss in accuracy. Timely and precise classification and segmentation of gastric bleeding in endoscopic imagery are pivotal for the rapid diagnosis and intervention of gastric complications, which is critical in life-saving medical procedures. Traditional methods grapple with the challenge posed by the indistinguishable intensity values of bleeding tissues adjacent to other gastric structures. Our study seeks to revolutionize this domain by introducing a novel deep learning model, the Dual Spatial Kernelized Constrained Fuzzy C-Means (Deep DuS-KFCM) clustering algorithm. This Hybrid Neuro-Fuzzy system synergizes Neural Networks with Fuzzy Logic to offer a highly precise and efficient identification of bleeding regions. Implementing a two-fold coarse-to-fine strategy for segmentation, this model initially employs the Spatial Kernelized Fuzzy C-Means (SKFCM) algorithm enhanced with spatial intensity profiles and subsequently harnesses the state-of-the-art DeepLabv3+ with ResNet50 architecture to refine the segmentation output. Through extensive experiments across mainstream gastric bleeding and red spots datasets, our Deep DuS-KFCM model demonstrated unprecedented accuracy rates of 87.95%, coupled with a specificity of 96.33%, outperforming contemporary segmentation methods. The findings underscore the model’s robustness against noise and its outstanding segmentation capabilities, particularly for identifying subtle bleeding symptoms, thereby presenting a significant leap forward in medical image processing. © 2024, CC BY.

Pressure injury (PI) is one of the major causes of short-term death. Early intervention for patients at risk plays an essential role in PI. However, many nurses may ignore risks. This paper aims to establish a model to predict interventions according to the patient's physical signs, which can help nurses develop care plans. We used data from 1,483 patients with 25 characteristics and 17 interventions. We use the Random Forest and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to optimize model parameters. Then we compared it with KNN, SVM, and Decision Tree. The 10-fold cross-validation result showed that the Random Forest has better accuracy than other methods, with an f1 score of 0.84. This finding proved the feasibility of using machine learning to help formulate care plans according to the classification of index prediction results. Our model shows that hemoglobin, Braden PI score, and age are the three most influential risk factors.

Revisiting Graph based Collaborative Filtering: A Linear Residual Graph Convolutional Network Approach

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) are state-of-the-art graph based representation learning models by iteratively stacking multiple layers of convolution aggregation operations and non-linear activation operations. Recently, in Collaborative Filtering (CF) based Recommender Systems (RS), by treating the user-item interaction behavior as a bipartite graph, some researchers model higher-layer collaborative signals with GCNs. These GCN based recommender models show superior performance compared to traditional works. However, these models suffer from training difficulty with non-linear activations for large user-item graphs. Besides, most GCN based models could not model deeper layers due to the over smoothing effect with the graph convolution operation. In this paper, we revisit GCN based CF models from two aspects. First, we empirically show that removing non-linearities would enhance recommendation performance, which is consistent with the theories in simple graph convolutional networks. Second, we propose a residual network structure that is specifically designed for CF with user-item interaction modeling, which alleviates the over smoothing problem in graph convolution aggregation operation with sparse user-item interaction data. The proposed model is a linear model and it is easy to train, scale to large datasets, and yield better efficiency and effectiveness on two real datasets.
