This paper aims for the task of text-to-video retrieval, where given a query in the form of a natural-language sentence, it is asked to retrieve videos which are semantically relevant to the given query, from a great number of unlabeled videos. The success of this task depends on cross-modal representation learning that projects both videos and sentences into common spaces for semantic similarity computation. In this work, we concentrate on video representation learning, an essential component for text-to-video retrieval. Inspired by the reading strategy of humans, we propose a Reading-strategy Inspired Visual Representation Learning (RIVRL) to represent videos, which consists of two branches: a previewing branch and an intensive-reading branch. The previewing branch is designed to briefly capture the overview information of videos, while the intensive-reading branch is designed to obtain more in-depth information. Moreover, the intensive-reading branch is aware of the video overview captured by the previewing branch. Such holistic information is found to be useful for the intensive-reading branch to extract more fine-grained features. Extensive experiments on three datasets are conducted, where our model RIVRL achieves a new state-of-the-art on TGIF and VATEX. Moreover, on MSR-VTT, our model using two video features shows comparable performance to the state-of-the-art using seven video features and even outperforms models pre-trained on the large-scale HowTo100M dataset. Exploring linguistic features and user engagement in Chinese online mental health counseling

With the popularity of online mental health platforms, more individuals are seeking help and receiving social support by openly discussing their problems. Therefore, it's crucial to gain a deeper understanding of which problem disclosures and social support on these platforms can attract more user attention and engagement. Previous research has primarily focused on social media forums. Our work concentrates on the professional mental health platform, intending to understand the linguistic features present in posts that promote user engagement and interaction. We employ text mining and deep learning techniques to analyze posts consisting of 22,250 questions from help-seekers and 78,328 answers providing social support extracted from the Chinese online mental health counseling platform. Initially, we analyze the high-frequency words and topics of the questions and answers to gain insights into the primary focal points and the range of topics covered in these posts. The results indicate that work-related issues are the most concerning and troublesome for help-seekers, and the topics that users follow are approximately 8 types, including growth, family, in-love, marriage, emotions, human-relations, behavioral-therapy and career. Subsequently, we analyze the language usage in question-and-answer posts with different engagement from three aspects: vocabulary categories, linguistic style matching, and language modeling, aiming to identify which linguistic features can attract more user attention and engagement. The results reveal that high-engagement answer posts exhibit a higher degree of linguistic style matching with the corresponding questions, and the use of vocabulary categories also influences the attention and engagement of the posts. Synthetic Instance Segmentation from Semantic Image Segmentation Masks

In recent years, instance segmentation has garnered significant attention across various applications. However, training a fully-supervised instance segmentation model requires costly both instance-level and pixel-level annotations. In contrast, weakly-supervised instance segmentation methods, such as those using image-level class labels or point labels, often struggle to satisfy the accuracy and recall requirements of practical scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel paradigm called Synthetic Instance Segmentation (SISeg). SISeg achieves instance segmentation results by leveraging image masks generated by existing semantic segmentation models, and it is highly efficient as we do not require additional training for semantic segmentation or the use of instance-level image annotations. In other words, the proposed model does not need extra manpower or higher computational expenses. Specifically, we first obtain a semantic segmentation mask of the input image via an existent semantic segmentation model. Then, we calculate a displacement field vector for each pixel based on the segmentation mask, which can indicate representations belonging to the same class but different instances, i.e., obtaining the instance-level object information. Finally, the instance segmentation results are refined by a learnable category-agnostic object boundary branch. Extensive experimental results on two challenging datasets highlight the effectiveness of SISeg in achieving competitive results when compared to state-of-the-art methods, especially fully-supervised methods. Triplet learning, i.e. learning from triplet data, has attracted much attention in computer vision tasks with an extremely large number of categories, e.g., face recognition and person re-identification. Albeit with rapid progress in designing and applying triplet learning algorithms, there is a lacking study on the theoretical understanding of their generalization performance. To fill this gap, this paper investigates the generalization guarantees of triplet learning by leveraging the stability analysis. Specifically, we establish the first general high-probability generalization bound for the triplet learning algorithm satisfying the uniform stability, and then 1 obtain the excess risk bounds of the order (Equation presented). for both stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and regularized risk minimization (RRM), where 2n is approximately equal to the number of training samples. Moreover, an optimistic generalization bound in expectation as fast as O(n−1) is derived for RRM in a low noise case via the on-average stability analysis. Block-Structured Optimization for Subgraph Detection in Interdependent Networks

We propose a generalized framework for block-structured nonconvex optimization, which can be applied to structured subgraph detection in interdependent networks, such as multi-layer networks, temporal networks, networks of networks, and many others. Specifically, we design an effective, efficient, and parallelizable projection algorithm, namely Graph Block-structured Gradient Projection (GBGP), to optimize a general non-linear function subject to graph-structured constraints. We prove that our algorithm: 1) runs in nearly-linear time on the network size;2) enjoys a theoretical approximation guarantee. Moreover, we demonstrate how our framework can be applied to two very practical applications and conduct comprehensive experiments to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm. DGA-Net: Dynamic gaussian attention network for sentence semantic matching

Sentence semantic matching requires an agent to determine the semantic relation between two sentences, where much recent progress has been made by advancement of representation learning techniques and inspiration of human behaviors. Among all these methods, attention mechanism plays an essential role by selecting important parts effectively. However, current attention methods either focus on all the important parts in a static way or only select one important part at one attention step dynamically, which leaves a large space for further improvement. To this end, in this paper, we design a novel Dynamic Gaussian Attention Network (DGA-Net) to combine the advantages of current static and dynamic attention methods. More specifically, we first leverage pre-trained language model to encode the input sentences and construct semantic representations from a global perspective. Then, we develop a Dynamic Gaussian Attention (DGA) to dynamically capture the important parts and corresponding local contexts from a detailed perspective. Finally, we combine the global information and detailed local information together to decide the semantic relation of sentences comprehensively and precisely. Extensive experiments on two popular sentence semantic matching tasks demonstrate that our proposed DGA-Net is effective in improving the ability of attention mechanism. © 2021, CC BY.

For the high density of users and accompanying network service requirements in the cellular system, Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is a promising technology to cope with the increasing wireless traffic demands by reusing spectrum resources. In practice, the wireless signal is easy to be eavesdropped in D2D communications underlaying cellular networks, hence, ensuring a secure communication for cellular user equipments (CUEs) is an urgent and meaningful problem. In this paper, we propose a joint subcarrier and power allocation scheme for maximizing the sum data rate of D2D pairs, meanwhile protecting the CUEs against eavesdropping. Specifically, in the proposed scheme, we first quantify the security performance with the secrecy data rate, and obtain the closed-form expression for the optimal power allocation of CUEs and D2D pairs by tightening the quality of service (QoS) and secrecy rate requirement constraints of CUEs. Based on the obtained power allocation solution, by searching the optimal mapping relationship between CUEs and D2D pairs, we develop a subcarrier assignment strategy with the Hungarian algorithm to solve it, which can further enhance the sum data rate of D2D pairs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can significantly yield better performance than other schemes.

Vehicle re-identification (reID) aims at identifying vehicles across different non-overlapping cameras views. The existing methods heavily relied on well-labeled datasets for ideal performance, which inevitably causes fateful drop due to the severe domain bias between the training domain and the real-world scenes;worse still, these approaches required full annotations, which is labor-consuming. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel progressive adaptation learning method for vehicle reID, named PAL, which infers from the abundant data without annotations. For PAL, a data adaptation module is employed for source domain, which generates the images with similar data distribution to unlabeled target domain as "pseudo target samples". These pseudo samples are combined with the unlabeled samples that are selected by a dynamic sampling strategy to make training faster. We further proposed a weighted label smoothing (WLS) loss, which considers the similarity between samples with different clusters to balance the confidence of pseudo labels. The current streaming feature structure learning needs to be improved in the processing of nonlinear continuous data and the dynamic acquisition of causal structures. In this paper, we propose a causal structure learning algorithm, CANSF, based on the streaming feature of additive noise models. We have made three contributions. First, by using the information carried by the noise of nonlinear continuous data, we propose a real correlation identification method based on logarithmic likelihood, which can identify the real correlation and redundant features of target features, and dynamically select parent and child nodes for each feature. Second, based on regression analysis, a method to determine the causal direction is proposed, which can be used for dynamic orientation. Third, a learning method of causal structure based on streaming features is proposed, which can obtain the Causal structure diagram directly and dynamically.

ER: Equivariance Regularizer for knowledge Graph Completion

Tensor factorization and distanced based models play important roles in knowledge graph completion (KGC). However, the relational matrices in KGC methods often induce a high model complexity, bearing a high risk of overfitting. As a remedy, researchers propose a variety of different regularizers such as the tensor nuclear norm regularizer. Our motivation is based on the observation that the previous work only focuses on the "size" of the parametric space, while leaving the implicit semantic information widely untouched. To address this issue, we propose a new regularizer, namely, Equivariance Regularizer (ER), which can suppress overfitting by leveraging the implicit semantic information. Specifically, ER can enhance the generalization ability of the model by employing the semantic equivariance between the head and tail entities. Moreover, it is a generic solution for both distance based models and tensor factorization based models. The experimental results indicate a clear and substantial improvement over the state-of-the-art relation prediction methods. © 2022, CC BY.
