The matrix-based Rényi’s entropy allows us to directly quantify information measures from given data, without explicit estimation of the underlying probability distribution. This intriguing property makes it widely applied in statistical inference and machine learning tasks. However, this information theoretical quantity is not robust against noise in the data, and is computationally prohibitive in large-scale applications. To address these issues, we propose a novel measure of information, termed low-rank matrix-based Rényi’s entropy, based on low-rank representations of infinitely divisible kernel matrices. The proposed entropy functional inherits the specialty of of the original definition to directly quantify information from data, but enjoys additional advantages including robustness and effective calculation. Specifically, our low-rank variant is more sensitive to informative perturbations induced by changes in underlying distributions, while being insensitive to uninformative ones caused by noises. Moreover, low-rank Rényi’s entropy can be efficiently approximated by random projection and Lanczos iteration techniques, reducing the overall complexity from O(n3) to O(n2s) or even O(ns2), where n is the number of data samples and s n. We conduct large-scale experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of this new information measure, demonstrating superior results compared to matrix-based Rényi’s entropy in terms of both performance and computational efficiency. With the high mortality rate for the cases of malignant tumors, the discovery and early treatment of cancer is critical to improving the 5-year survival rate of cancer. The biggest challenge in control and prevention is how to detect tumors as early as possible, so that the most effective means can be used for treatment. With the help of the WOS database, researchers found that liquid biopsy, genetic material/protein expression and computer imaging play an important role in cancer detection. Through analysis of the history and current status of cancer detection technology development, this paper also aims to provide guidance for the clinical practice of current cancer screening and provide inspiration for future technological development. © 2019 Association for Computing Machinery.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)-guided deep models have obtained impressive performance for image representation, however the representation ability may still be restricted and usually needs more epochs to make the model converge in training, due to the useful information loss during the convolution and pooling operations. We therefore propose a general feature recovery layer, termed Low-rank Deep Feature Recovery (LDFR), to enhance the representation ability of the convolutional features by seamlessly integrating low-rank recovery into CNNs, which can be easily extended to all existing CNNs-based models. To be specific, to recover the lost information during the convolution operation, LDFR aims at learning the low-rank projections to embed the feature maps onto a low-rank subspace based on some selected informative convolutional feature maps. Such low-rank recovery operation can ensure all convolutional feature maps to be reconstructed easily to recover the underlying subspace with more useful and detailed information discovered, e.g., the strokes of characters or the texture information of clothes can be enhanced after LDFR. In addition, to make the learnt low-rank subspaces more powerful for feature recovery, we design a fusion strategy to obtain a generalized subspace, which averages over all learnt sub-spaces in each LDFR layer, so that the convolutional feature maps in test phase can be recovered effectively via low-rank embedding. Extensive results on several image datasets show that existing CNNs-based models equipped with our LDFR layer can obtain better performance.

Object pose detection and tracking has recently attracted increasing attention due to its wide applications in many areas, such as autonomous driving, robotics, and augmented reality. Among methods for object pose detection and tracking, deep learning is the most promising one that has shown better performance than others. However, survey study about the latest development of deep learning-based methods is lacking. Therefore, this study presents a comprehensive review of recent progress in object pose detection and tracking that belongs to the deep learning technical route. To achieve a more thorough introduction, the scope of this study is limited to methods taking monocular RGB/RGBD data as input and covering three kinds of major tasks: instance-level monocular object pose detection, category-level monocular object pose detection, and monocular object pose tracking. In our work, metrics, datasets, and methods of both detection and tracking are presented in detail. Comparative results of current state-of-the-art methods on several publicly available datasets are also presented, together with insightful observations and inspiring future research directions. By comparing quantitative ranking with qualitative contributions, we reveal that academic assessment has to put real contributions ahead of quantitative indicators and that rankings have nothing to do with universities’ and their libraries’ true values. The greatness of a university lies in its impacts on the progress for human knowledge and the promotion for social development. Although ranking of universities by way of quantitative indicators can reflect some information, we should pay more attention to qualitative contributions.

In this paper, we present XDN, an optimization and inference engine for accelerating residual neural networks on Cambricon chips. We leverage a channel pruning method to compress the weights of ResNet-50. By exploring the optimization opportunities in computational graphs, we propose a layer fusion strategy, which dramatically decreases the number of scalar computation layers, such as Batch Normalization, Scale. Furthermore, we design an efficient implementation of XDN, including data preprocessing, hyper-parameter auto-tuning, etc. The experimental results show that the ResNet-50 model can achieve significant speedup without accuracy loss by using our XDN engine. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Generated method of transcriptional regulatory networks remains an important research in biology. Many approaches have been proposed to construct transcriptional regulatory networks. However, with the increase of ChIP-seq and RNA-seq data, the speed of constructing transcriptional regulation networks is still a challenge. Moreover, parallel computing lacks application in constructing gene regulatory networks through the analysis of the relationships between transcription factors (TFs) and target genes (TGs). Therefore, in this paper, a parallel generated method of transcriptional regulatory networks was proposed. First, two datasets, Michigan Cancer Foundation – 7 (MCF-7) and Cardiomyocytes (CM) were applied. Then, a parallel method was used to generate transcriptional regulatory network with their transcription factors (TFs) and target genes (TGs). Finally, experimental results showed that 61% regulatory relations in MCF-7 were validated in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), while 29% results needed further experimental verification. Besides, 56% regulatory relations in CM were consistent with GEO, while 33% results were not yet verified. Furthermore, speed of parallel algorithm was faster than traditional serial algorithm in generating transcriptional regulatory networks. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Visual Feedback in Eye-Controlled Interaction: A Study on the Applicability for Pointing and Selection Tasks Across Different Vibration Environments

Because of the advantages of short learning time and strong collaborative ability, eye-control interaction is considered to be a promising human-computer interaction method. In the process of eye-controlled interaction, the operator needs to choose more effective visual feedback to accurately understand the operation process, so as to reduce the wrong operation and the interaction burden. Meanwhile, vibration, as an unavoidable interaction environment in life, affects the performance of different visual feedback modalities to a great extent. Based on the above reasons, we want to explore the performance of different visual feedback in different vibration environments. First, we have investigated the performance of cross cursor and circle cursor in static, low vibration and high vibration environments to accomplish the pointing task. Second, we have investigated the performance of the time-delayed selection confirmation mechanism and selection sub-selection reconfirmation mechanism in the selection task under three vibration states. We found that in the pointing task, the circular cursor has a lower perceived workload and a longer onset of visual fatigue in the static environment. It turns out that the circular cursor is more suitable for the pointing task. In the selection task, the time-delayed selection mechanism had higher selection accuracy, lower perceptual workload, and higher subjective preference compared to the selection sub-selection reconfirmation mechanism, although there was no significant difference in the time to fatigue onset. The time-delayed selection mechanism was the better selection mechanism. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In recent years, data center network is used for transmission, storage and processing of big data, which plays an important role for applications in cloud computing and CDN distribution. Network topology and routing algorithm are its core research content and key technical issues. The traditional network topology is difficult to guarantee the quality of service in scalability and fault tolerance. The server-centric data center network topology can ensure the scale of the data center network by recursively increasing the number of network nodes and links. relative to the Dcell, BCube, and BCCC typical network topology, PTNet network as a typical representative of a new type of the server-centric data center network topology, which has more advantages in scalability, fault tolerance and so on. Multicast and broadcast in data center network have more application scenarios and use value. For example, the video conference online, multimedia remote education and other development are inseparable from the application and promotion of network multicast and broadcast. So it is necessary to research the routing algorithms of multicast and broadcast in the network. The Minority Matters: A Diversity-Promoting Collaborative Metric Learning Algorithm

Collaborative Metric Learning (CML) has recently emerged as a popular method in recommendation systems (RS), closing the gap between metric learning and Collaborative Filtering. Following the convention of RS, existing methods exploit unique user representation in their model design. This paper focuses on a challenging scenario where a user has multiple categories of interests. Under this setting, we argue that the unique user representation might induce preference bias, especially when the item category distribution is imbalanced. To address this issue, we propose a novel method called Diversity-Promoting Collaborative Metric Learning (DPCML), with the hope of considering the commonly ignored minority interest of the user. The key idea behind DPCML is to include a multiple set of representations for each user in the system. Based on this embedding paradigm, user preference toward an item is aggregated from different embeddings by taking the minimum item-user distance among the user embedding set. Furthermore, we observe that the diversity of the embeddings for the same user also plays an essential role in the model. To this end, we propose a diversity control regularization term to accommodate the multi-vector representation strategy better. Theoretically, we show that DPCML could generalize well to unseen test data by tackling the challenge of the annoying operation that comes from the minimum value. Experiments over a range of benchmark datasets speak to the efficacy of DPCML. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.
