Deep learning methods have shown significant performance in medical image analysis tasks. However, they generally act like ”black box” without explanations in both feature extraction and decision processes, leading to lack of clinical insights and high risk assessments. To aid deep learning in envisioning diseases with visual clues, we propose Representation Group-Disentangling Network (RGD-Net), which can completely disentangle feature space of input X-ray images into several independent feature groups, each corresponding to a specific disease. Taking several semantically related and labeled X-ray images as input, RGD-Net firstly extracts completely group-disentangled representations of diseases through Group-Disentangle Module, which applies group-swap and linking operations to construct latent space by enforcing semantic consistency of attributes. To prevent learning degenerate representations defined as shortcut problem, we further introduce adversarial constricts on mapping from features to diseases, thus avoiding model collapse with former free-form disentanglement. Experiments on chestxray-14 and ChestXpert datasets demonstrate that RGD-Net are effective in predicting diseases with remarkable advantages, which leverage potential factors contributing to different diseases, thus enhancing interpretability in working patterns of deep learning methods.

Nowadays, vision-based computing tasks play an important role in various real-world applications. However, many vision computing tasks, e.g. semantic segmentation, are usually computationally expensive, posing a challenge to the computing systems that are resource-constrained but require fast response speed. Therefore, it is valuable to develop accurate and real-time vision processing models that only require limited computational resources. To this end, we propose the Spatial-detail Guided Context Propagation Network (SGCPNet) for achieving real-time semantic segmentation. In SGCPNet, we propose the strategy of spatial-detail guided context propagation. It uses the spatial details of shallow layers to guide the propagation of the low-resolution global contexts, in which the lost spatial information can be effectively reconstructed. In this way, the need for maintaining high-resolution features along the network is freed, therefore largely improving the model efficiency. On the other hand, due to the effective reconstruction of spatial details, the segmentation accuracy can be still preserved. In the experiments, we validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed SGCPNet model. On the Citysacpes dataset, for example, our SGCPNet achieves 69.5% mIoU segmentation accuracy, while its speed reaches 178.5 FPS on 768×1536 images on a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPU card. Object pose detection and tracking has recently attracted increasing attention due to its wide applications in many areas, such as autonomous driving, robotics, and augmented reality. Among methods for object pose detection and tracking, deep learning is the most promising one that has shown better performance than others. However, survey study about the latest development of deep learning-based methods is lacking. Therefore, this study presents a comprehensive review of recent progress in object pose detection and tracking that belongs to the deep learning technical route. To achieve a more thorough introduction, the scope of this study is limited to methods taking monocular RGB/RGBD data as input and covering three kinds of major tasks: instance-level monocular object pose detection, category-level monocular object pose detection, and monocular object pose tracking. In our work, metrics, datasets, and methods of both detection and tracking are presented in detail. Comparative results of current state-of-the-art methods on several publicly available datasets are also presented, together with insightful observations and inspiring future research directions. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)-guided deep models have obtained impressive performance for image representation, however the representation ability may still be restricted and usually needs more epochs to make the model converge in training, due to the useful information loss during the convolution and pooling operations. We therefore propose a general feature recovery layer, termed Low-rank Deep Feature Recovery (LDFR), to enhance the representation ability of the convolutional features by seamlessly integrating low-rank recovery into CNNs, which can be easily extended to all existing CNNs-based models. To be specific, to recover the lost information during the convolution operation, LDFR aims at learning the low-rank projections to embed the feature maps onto a low-rank subspace based on some selected informative convolutional feature maps. Such low-rank recovery operation can ensure all convolutional feature maps to be reconstructed easily to recover the underlying subspace with more useful and detailed information discovered, e.g., the strokes of characters or the texture information of clothes can be enhanced after LDFR. In addition, to make the learnt low-rank subspaces more powerful for feature recovery, we design a fusion strategy to obtain a generalized subspace, which averages over all learnt sub-spaces in each LDFR layer, so that the convolutional feature maps in test phase can be recovered effectively via low-rank embedding. Extensive results on several image datasets show that existing CNNs-based models equipped with our LDFR layer can obtain better performance.

The K-Step H Indices in Citation Networks at the Paper, Author, and Institution Levels

From the viewpoint of high-generation citation networks, h indices can be extended to global metrics at both basic and aggregated levels. To accomplish this, three types of networks are designed: the paper-paper network, the author-paper-paper network, and the institution-paper-paper network. The k-step h index is then proposed at the level of papers, authors, and institutions, respectively. Through a comprehensive empirical study based on the APS dataset, it is found that the k-step h index extends the depth and dimensionality of the Hirsh core, allowing for more global information. The consistency and convergent validity of the k-step h indices are quantitatively assessed. The results indicate that the k-step h index demonstrates a high degree of consistency and focuses on the potential for further research, and is capable of measuring the long-term reputation rather than short-term popularity. The convergent validity of the k-step h indices is rigorously tested using benchmark examples such as Nobel laureates and their publications, and they demonstrate superior performance in identifying seminal papers and prominent scientists compared to traditional metrics at the paper and author levels. The k-step h index also excels in ranking institutions, offering a promising new approach for evaluating the impact and influence of scientific entities at both the basic and aggregate levels. Visual question answering requires a system to provide an accurate natural language answer given an image and a natural language question. However, it is widely recognized that previous generic VQA methods often tend to memorize biases present in the training data rather than learning proper behaviors, such as grounding images before predicting answers. Therefore, these methods usually achieve high in-distribution but poor out-of-distribution performance. In recent years, various datasets and debiasing methods have been proposed to evaluate and enhance the VQA robustness, respectively. This paper provides the first comprehensive survey focused on this emerging fashion. Specifically, we first provide an overview of the development process of datasets from in-distribution and out-of-distribution perspectives. Then, we examine the evaluation metrics employed by these datasets. Thirdly, we propose a typology that presents the development process, similarities and differences, robustness comparison, and technical features of existing debiasing methods. Furthermore, we analyze and discuss the robustness of representative vision-and-language pre-training models on VQA. Finally, through a thorough review of the available literature and experimental analysis, we discuss the key areas for future research from various viewpoints. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Landmark recognition stands as a prominent classification challenge within the domain of vision and perception, involving the identification and localization of landmarks in images. However, existing landmark recognition methods often fall short in delivering satisfactory performance. A critical issue lies in the lack of simultaneous exploration of local, regional, and global modeling. Intuitively, the local details, regional features, and global structure within an image, especially of a building, significantly contribute to landmark recognition. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach, termed Hierarchical Context Modeling Network (HCMNet), for landmark recognition. In our methodology, we introduce a Hierarchical Context Modeling Block (HCMB) designed with a triplet-branch structure to model image context in a hierarchical manner. These branches consist of the local branch, which leverages a convolutional layer to capture local details, the regional branch focused on extracting regional features through large-kernel asymmetrical convolutional layers, and the global branch aims at encompassing the broader context by incorporating channel attention. To enhance the modeling capacity, we assemble multiple HCMBs into the HCMNet, creating a hierarchical structure. Comprehensive experiments validate the efficacy of the proposed HCMNet for landmark recognition, showcasing its superior performance compared to current methods. The proposed hierarchical context modeling approach proves instrumental in capturing the intricate features essential for accurate landmark recognition.

Recent advances in single image super-resolution (SISR) have achieved remarkable performance through deep learning. However, the high computational cost hinders the deployment of SISR models on edge devices. Instead of proposing new SISR models, a new trend is emerging to improve network efficiency by reducing parameters, FLOPs, and inference time through slight modifications to the original models. However, recent methods usually focus on reducing only one of three metrics, i.e., FLOPs, parameters and inference time, which inevitably increases the other two metrics. In this paper, we propose a novel Adaptive Student Inference Network (ASIN) on popular SISR models, which aims at reducing FLOPs and inference time while maintaining the number of parameters and restoring clearer high-resolution images. Specifically, our ASIN divides a SISR model into three components (head, body and tail) and adopts various strategies for each part. For head and tail parts, to ensure the restored images contain more detailed information, a novel auxiliary Enhanced Teacher Network (ETNet) is designed, which is trained with the ground-truth images to obtain more prior knowledge to guide student network to extract more accurate textures using a new knowledge distillation method. For the body part, owing to the varying difficulties of the reconstructions in different regions, we propose an Adaptive Depth Predicted Module (ADPM) to dynamically shorten average depth of network to reduce the computational cost of overall network. Extensive experiments on two datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and state-of-the-art performance of our ASIN compared to its counterparts.

Lottery is a game with many people's dreams. But corruptions of lottery centers make the lottery unfair. To address this unfair issue, fair lottery schemes have been studied for several years. In these schemes, delay functions or aggregation protocols can be used to generate the winning numbers fairly. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of the existing schemes can achieve the winning number generated randomly, while the randomness can be verified fairly. In this article, we first propose a [B]lockchain based sm[a]rt co[n]tract for [F]air and [E]fficient [L]ottery (BanFEL) scheme. We further present a winning number random generation smart contract, by which players submit the purchased numbers and the non-tampering property is protected. Security analysis and experiments show that the fairness of BanFEL is protected better than the existing works. Meanwhile, the verification cost of this scheme are at least 0.03s lower than the traditional Grumbach's scheme between 1000 and 10000 players.

Road network restoration is an important issue in the post-disaster disposal and rescue, especially when extraordinarily serious natural disasters (e.g., floods and earthquakes) occur. Central to this endeavour is the problem of determining how to reasonably schedule and route the repair crew to quickly restore the damaged road network and establish reliable supply lines from supply nodes to demand nodes. However, most existing work focuses on the activities of the single repair crew in the static road network, which is unable to adapt to the dynamic changes of the road network caused by secondary disasters, such as rock slides and debris flows. Consequently, this work is concentrated on multicrew dynamic scheduling and routing in road network restoration. Specifically, a model of multicrew dynamic scheduling and routing is first presented. Next, the Markov decision process is adopted to construct a decision model for repair crews, based on which a multiagent Q-learning algorithm is developed to find the best scheduling and routing strategy. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can make repair crews adjust their scheduling and routing strategies according to the dynamic changes of the damaged road network and provides a useful attempt to restore the damaged road network in complex, dynamic emergency scenarios of post-disaster.
