Coastal eutrophication and hypoxia remain a persistent environmental crisis despite the great efforts to reduce nutrient loading and mitigate associated environmental damages. Symptoms of this crisis have appeared to spread rapidly, reaching developing countries in Asia with emergences in Southern America and Africa. The pace of changes and the underlying drivers remain not so clear. To address the gap, we review the up-To-date status and mechanisms of eutrophication and hypoxia in global coastal oceans, upon which we examine the trajectories of changes over the 40 years or longer in six model coastal systems with varying socio-economic development statuses and different levels and histories of eutrophication. Although these coastal systems share common features of eutrophication, site-specific characteristics are also substantial, depending on the regional environmental setting and level of social-economic development along with policy implementation and management. Nevertheless, ecosystem recovery generally needs greater reduction in pressures compared to that initiated degradation and becomes less feasible to achieve past norms with a longer time anthropogenic pressures on the ecosystems. While the qualitative causality between drivers and consequences is well established, quantitative attribution of these drivers to eutrophication and hypoxia remains difficult especially when we consider the social economic drivers because the changes in coastal ecosystems are subject to multiple influences and the cause-effect relationship is often non-linear. Such relationships are further complicated by climate changes that have been accelerating over the past few decades. The knowledge gaps that limit our quantitative and mechanistic understanding of the human-coastal ocean nexus are identified, which is essential for science-based policy making. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) plays an important role in guiding treatment plan adjustments and clinical outcomes in Crohn's disease. To evaluate the role of TDM-guided optimization of infliximab dosage in patients with pediatric Crohn's disease. Medical records of patients with pediatric Crohn's disease who were treated with infliximab and had proactive TDM from June 2020 to June 2022 at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University were included. Baseline influencing factors for infliximab trough concentration (TC) and clinical outcomes before and after the treatment change were analyzed to assess the value of adjusting treatment in the patients. Forty-six patients (male-to-female ratio = 1.55:1, age <18 years) were included. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that hormone exposure (odds ratio: 0.042, 95% confidence interval: 0.002–0.924, p = 0.044), perianal lesions (5.813, 0.984–34.349, p = 0.052), simplified endoscopic score for Crohn's disease (1.656, 1.065–2.577, p = 0.025), and total protein (TP) (0.851, 0.749–0.967, p = 0.014) were correlated with infliximab TC. Shortening the treatment interval increased the infliximab TC (pre vs. post = 1.69 ± 0.8 vs. 12.03 ± 6.64, p = 0.001, n = 12) after 93.9 ± 37.47 days, decreased the pediatric Crohn's disease activity index and simplified endoscopic score for Crohn's disease, and increased the biochemical remission, clinical remission, endoscopic remission, and endoscopic response rates; however, there was no statistical significance. Hormone exposure, perianal lesions, simplified endoscopic score for Crohn's disease, and TP levels before the first infliximab use affected the infliximab TC. Shortening the treatment interval can improve infliximab TC levels and clinical outcomes.

This paper proposes a novel bio-inspired termite queen algorithm (TQA) to solve optimization problems by simulating the division of labor in termite populations under a queen’s rule. TQA is benchmarked on a set of 23 functions to test its performance at solving global optimization problems, and applied to six real-world engineering design problems to verify its reliability and effectiveness. Comparative simulation studies with other algorithms are conducted, from whose results it is observed that TQA satisfactorily solves global optimization problems and engineering design problems.

Titanium (Ti) is extensively utilized in dental implants due to its exceptional biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. Nonetheless, its biological inertness impedes its osteogenic and antimicrobial capabilities, which are essential for implant stability and infection prevention. This study explores the improvement of Ti's surface properties by coating it with polydopamine (PDA) and subsequently doping it with Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions. We first prepared Ti-PDA, followed by the fabrication of Ti-PDA-Cu and Ti-PDA-Cu/Zn samples. Material characterization revealed that Ti-PDA-Cu/Zn exhibits greater wettability compared to Ti and can consistently and steadily release Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺. In vitro experiments demonstrated that Ti-PDA-Cu/Zn significantly enhanced the adhesion, proliferation, and mineralization of osteoblasts, increased the expression of osteogenic genes, and demonstrated exceptional antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This dual-functional surface modification presents a promising approach to augment the osteogenic and antimicrobial properties of Ti implants. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we investigate the defense problem against the joint attacks of denial-of-service attacks and data tampering attacks in the framework of system identification with binary-valued observations. By estimating the key parameters of the joint attack and compensating them in the identification algorithm, a compensation-oriented defense scheme is proposed. Then the identification algorithm of system parameter is designed and is further proved to be consistent. The asymptotic normality of the algorithm is obtained, and on this basis, we propose the optimal defense scheme. Furthermore, the implementation of the optimal defense scheme is discussed. Finally, a simulation example is presented to verify the effectiveness of the main results.

Photoluminescence is one of the most meticulous ways to manipulate light energy. Typical photoluminescent emitters are mostly stable substances with a pure photophysical process of spontaneous photon-emission from their excited states. Intermediate emitters are elusive attributing to their synchronous energy transfer process including photophysical and incomplete photochemical pathways. An intermediate emitter containing radicals is more difficult to be observed due to its inherent chemical reactivity. Here, these challenges are overcome by spontaneously formed space limitations in polymer crosslinking networks meanwhile chemically active intermediates are captured. These doublet intermediates exhibit unique long-wavelength emissions under chemically crosslinking confinement conditions, and their luminous mechanism provides a novel perspective for designing intermediate emitters with liquid-crystal character and photoresponsive features towards spatiotemporal encryption, promising for the detection of photochemical reactions and the development of fascinating luminescent systems.

The Kikuchi bands arise from Bragg diffraction of incoherent electrons scattered within a crystalline specimen and can be observed in both the transmission and reflection modes of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Converging, rocking, or grazing incidence beams must be used to generate divergent electron sources to obtain the Kikuchi pattern. This paper report the observation of Kikuchi pattern from SEM images of an exceptional rotating crystal with continuous rotation in the local crystal direction and satisfying cylindrical symmetry, named a cylindrically symmetric rotating crystal. SEM images of cylindrically symmetric rotating crystals reflect the interactions between electrons and the sample in both the real- and momentum-space. Furthermore, we identify an unexpected mathematical relationship between the electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) Kikuchi pattern matrix map and the SEM image of the present sample which can be rationalized as a concrete example of the Banach fixed-point theorems in the field of EBSD technique. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

White circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-WOLEDs) are of great significance in potential lighting sources and full-color 3D displays. However, High-performance white CP-EL sources are almost unexplored. We have constructed full-color CP-EL devices based on chiral co-assemblies by using three achiral conjugated pyrene-based dyes (BP, w -WP and c -WP) doped with chiral binaphthyl-based enantiomers ( S -/ R -M) as the EMLs through an intermolecular chirality induction mechanism. ( S -/ R -M) 0.2 -( c -WP) 0.8 films exhibit regular helix nanofibers under annealing treatment and emit strong white CPL. Significantly, remarkable CP-WOLEDs based on ( S -/ R -M) 0.2 -( c -WP) 0.8 were achieved with | g EL | values as high as 6.2×10 −2 and an excellent CRI of 98 at the CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). These are the highest g EL and CRI values of reported CP-WOLEDs to date. This is the first achievement of CP-WOLEDs based on chiral co-assembled helix nanofiber emitters, and provides a valuable strategy with which to develop white CP-EL for future practical applications.
