Pan-sharpening is used to fuse multispectral images with low spatial resolution and a panchromatic (Pan) image with high spatial resolution to generate synthesized images featured with high spatial and multispectral properties. The pan-sharpened images are assumed valuable for further application. However, there have been a few investigations on the effectiveness of the pan-sharpened products in practice (i.e. object detection), compared with the fact many algorithms for pan-sharpening have been developed. In this paper, improvements contributed by pan-sharpening process for the object detection in multispectral imagery were investigated. Original multispectral images along with the corresponding Pan images acquired by Gaojing-1 (SuperView-1, as the first sub-meter high-resolution commercial remote sensing satellite independently developed in China) satellite were used. Seven algorithms widely used in pan-sharpening were applied separately and compared, while the object detection experiments were done by implementing Faster RCNN. The preliminary findings show: (1) the pan-sharpened images present obviously positive contribution to object detection with Faster RCNN, compared to the original multispectral images; (2) detection results of the pan-sharpened images vary with the algorithms used in pan-sharpening process. Furthermore, this investigation suggests none of the pan-sharpening algorithms showed absolute advantages in image fusion to achieve better object detection consequently.

Controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) method using a periodic transmitted signal source suppresses random noise by superimposing and averaging the recorded signal over multiple periods. However, it still faces great challenges in strong interference environments. Here we present a CSEM signal detection method based on a hybrid architecture of convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory neural network (LSTM). Our method improves the quality of the recorded signal by filtering out all the noise periods and retaining the useful signal periods. The core lies in combining the spatial feature extraction capability of CNN with the time series modeling capability of LSTM, which can deeply excavate the feature differences between noise and CSEM useful signal. Meanwhile, a classification model of signal and noise is constructed using a large-scale training dataset. This hybrid model exhibits superior performance compared to other deep learning models such as CNN or LSTM. Also, we propose a novel signal detection mechanism that not only maintains the periodicity of CSEM signal, but also greatly enhances processing efficiency. The results of synthetic and measured data demonstrate that our method can obtain useful signals from CSEM data containing different noise types and significantly improve the quality of sounding curves. In particular, our method is useful for CSEM signal detection in strong interference.

We present graph wavelet neural network (GWNN), a novel graph convolutional neural network (CNN), leveraging graph wavelet transform to address the shortcomings of previous spectral graph CNN methods that depend on graph Fourier transform. Different from graph Fourier transform, graph wavelet transform can be obtained via a fast algorithm without requiring matrix eigendecomposition with high computational cost. Moreover, graph wavelets are sparse and localized in vertex domain, offering high efficiency and good interpretability for graph convolution. The proposed GWNN significantly outperforms previous spectral graph CNNs in the task of graph-based semi-supervised classification on three benchmark datasets: Cora, Citeseer and Pubmed. © 7th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2019. Most existing popular methods for learning graph embedding only consider fixed-order global structural features and lack structures hierarchical representation. To address this weakness, we propose a novel graph embedding algorithm named GraphCSC that realizes classification based on skeleton information using fixed-order structures learned in anonymous random walks manner, and component information using different size subgraphs. Two graphs are similar if their skeletons and components are both similar, thus in our model, we integrate both of them together into embeddings as graph homogeneity characterization. We demonstrate our model on different datasets in comparison with a comprehensive list of up-to-date state-of-the-art baselines, and experiments show that our work is superior in real-world graph classification tasks. © 2021, CC BY.

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology is extensively utilized in aerospace and industrial manufacturing. However, parts built using AM are susceptible to spheroidization, porosity, cracks, and poor surface quality, making it difficult to establish an actionable product quality degree. Hence, developing a reasonable method to equate product quality with a new degree and further analyzing the product quality based on these standards has proven effective for enhancing part quality in AM. To achieve this goal, this paper proposes a surface roughness classification method that utilizes surface roughness analysis and sample enhancement. This method leverages edge cloud cooperation to efficiently analyze and integrate data from different sensors, enabling real-time monitoring and adjustment of the manufacturing process. Subsequently, the quality degree analysis system was developed utilizing matter-element extension cloud model. Furthermore, a bidirectional-gated recurrent unit (Bi-GRU) based model for quality classification and recognition has been established, with Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN) employed for sample enhancement to address the issue of imbalanced column classification and to enhance the accuracy of both classification and recognition. Finally, the results obtained from this case study demonstrate through comparative experiments that the proposed method for classifying surface roughness can accurately identify 98% of prepared samples. © 2025 The Authors

Within the context of cleaner production, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability has emerged as a central focus in supercomputing center development. To address the challenges in predicting energy consumption, this study proposes an architecture of edge computing-enabled energy efficiency prediction of immersion cooling system for supercomputing centers. This architecture combines time-series generative adversarial network (TimeGAN) for data augmentation with the neural basis expansion analysis for time series (N-BEATS) for prediction, providing a robust solution for accurate energy consumption prediction. TimeGAN enhances the training dataset by generating high-quality synthetic time-series data, effectively mitigating issues of data sparsity and imbalance. N-BEATS, with its modular architecture and strong adaptability to temporal data, ensures precise predictions by capturing both global trends and local variations in energy usage. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture, exhibiting superior performance across key metrics when compared to traditional models. Specifically, the RMSE of TimeGAN-N-BEATS reduced by more than 8 %, the MSE decreased by over 18 %, and the R 2 reached 97.31 %, outperforming baseline models such as long short-term memory and gated recurrent unit, and their attention-enhanced variants. This study highlights the potential of integrating generative and predictive models to optimize energy efficiency in liquid cooling systems, offering valuable insights for sustainable supercomputing operations.

Adaptive feature selection with weighted fuzzy rough sets for noisy data

The existence of noise in data may decrease the performance of the classification model. An intuitive assumption suggests that samples with a higher local density have a greater probability of being correctly classified. Moreover, there are differences in the importance of features. It should further increase the influence of important features on the classification task. Motivated by these issues, we propose a sample-driven adaptive feature selection method. It aims to the impact of noise and obtain the adaptive importance of features. In this paper, the Weighted Fuzzy Rough Sets model (WFRS) is proposed by utilizing more reliable samples to address noisy data. Firstly, the approximation margin is derived by applying the WFRS model within the original feature space from the sample's perspective. It serves as a basis for deriving the feature weights. On this basis, the weighted feature space is obtained. This space compresses the features with the lower weight and stretches the features with higher weight. Then, we obtain a specific fuzzy relation to maximize the within-class samples and minimize the between-class samples in the weighted feature space. Further, an evaluation function of features is constructed in this space. This function captures the uncertainty of fuzzy positive and non-negative regions. A Sample-driven adaptive Feature selection algorithm based on Weighted fuzzy rough sets model (SFW) is designed to capture the varying importance of features by considering local density of samples. The weighted features are subsequently selected to facilitate the downstream classification tasks. Experimental results show the WFRS model's robustness, the effectiveness of SFW, and its superiority compared to alternative methods.

The magnetic skyrmion, a tiny magnetic texture that holds promise as the next-generation information carrier, has been widely studied in recent years. A fine tunability of skyrmion density is required for its real applications in novel memory and logic devices. Here, we report on the manipulation of skyrmion density at room temperature in a Pt/Co/Ta/MgO system composed of multiple repetitions with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Néel-type skyrmions are observed by performing Lorentz transmission electron microscopy and magnetic force microscopy. The influence of structure repetition on skyrmions is experimentally investigated and further understood by micromagnetic simulations. The variation of skyrmion density with repetition number is mainly attributed to magnetic anisotropy. Meanwhile, thermal annealing is utilized to regulate the skyrmion density, where skyrmion-related properties exert a competitive effect. Our findings provide alternative means to manipulate skyrmion density, further allowing for optimized engineering of skyrmion-based devices.

With the evolution of network function virtualization (NFV) and edge computing, software-based network functions (NFs) can be deployed on closer-to-end-user edge servers to support a broad range of new services with high bandwidth and low latency. However, due to the resource limitation, strict QoS requirements and real-time flow fluctuations in edge network, existing cloud-based resource management strategy in NFV platforms is inefficient to be applied to the edge. Thus, we propose Finedge, a dynamic, fine-grained and cost-efficient edge resource management platform for NFV network. First, we conduct empirical experiments to find out the effect of NFs' resource allocation and their flow-level characteristics on performance. Then, by jointly considering these factors and QoS requirements (e.g., latency and packet loss rate), Finedge can automatically assign the most suitable CPU core and tune the most cost-efficient CPU quota to each NF. Finedge is also implemented with some key strategies including real-time flow monitoring, elastic resource scaling up and down, and also flexible NF migration among cores. Through extensive evaluations, we validate that Finedge can efficiently handle heterogeneous flows with the lowest CPU quota and the highest SLA satisfaction rate as compared with the default OS scheduler and other state-of-the-art resource management schemes.

Chest X-ray images are currently the best available visual media for diagnosing pneumonia, which plays a crucial role in clinical care. Medical images diagnosing can be error-prone for inexperienced radiologists, while tedious and time-consuming for experienced radiologists. To address these issues, we study automatically detect pneumonia in Chest X-ray images. However, this task exists several challenges. First, abnormal regions of pneumonia are difficult to identify due to the noise interference from other tissue and lesions. Second, the features of lung regions are usually essential information for diagnosis. With the pneumonia disease happens in lung areas, only training CNNs using global image may be affected by the irrelevant noisy regions. Third, the appearance of pneumonia in X-ray images is often vague, can overlap with other diagnoses. To cope with these challenges, we first introduce a lung segmentation network, which segments the lung from the original images. Then, develop a feature extraction model, which incorporates global and local features for pneumonia classification. Finally, build a cooperative learning framework, which merges bounding boxes (localization of pneu-monia) from two cooperative models. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods on the Kaggles RSNA Pneumonia Detection Challenge dataset and reaches excellent performance with the level of the top 1% in this competition. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.
