In this paper, we study the nurse rostering problem that considers multiple units and many soft time-related constraints. An efficient branch and price solution approach that relies on a fast algorithm to solve the pricing subproblem of the column generation process is presented. For the nurse rostering problem, its pricing subproblem can be formulated as a shortest path problem with resource constraints, which has been the backbone of several solutions for several classical problems like vehicle routing problems. However, approaches that perform well on these problems cannot be used since most constraints in the nurse rostering problem are soft. Based on ideas borrowed from global constraints in constraint programming to model rostering problems, an efficient dynamic programming algorithm with novel label definitions and dominating rules specific to soft time-related constraints is proposed. In addition, several acceleration strategies are employed to improve the branch and price algorithm. Computational results on instances of different sizes indicate that the proposed algorithm is a promising solution for the nurse rostering problem with multiple units. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Beam tracking is crucial for maintaining stable data transmission in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. However, a communication link can be disrupted by frequent switching of narrow beams between a base station and a UAV at certain moments. In this study, we propose a position prediction-based beam tracking algorithm with adaptive beam reconstruction (PPBT-AR) for high-speed UAV. Specifically, long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks are utilized to predict the nonlinear flight trajectory during high-speed flight. Moreover, we employ the generative diffusion model (GDM) to jointly optimize the beam width and signal strength, thereby reducing the number of beam switches. In addition, we design an adaptive beam reconstruction (ABR) mechanism to mitigate communication interruptions caused by prediction errors. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PPBT-AR reduces the number of beam switches by 66.6% and 76.9% in low-speed and high-speed scenarios compared to the traditional phased array beam tracking algorithm, respectively. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Hyperspectral image super resolution aims to improve the spatial resolution of given hyperspectral images, which has become a highly attractive topic in the field of image processing. Existing techniques typically focus on super resolution with sufficient training data. However, restricted by data acquisition conditions, certain hyperspectral images or band images are very different to obtain, resulted in insufficient training data. In order to solve this problem, a new hyperspectral image super resolution method is proposed in this paper in an effort to conduct the super resolution task over insufficient (sparse) training data, by applying the recently introduced ANFIS (Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System) interpolation method. Particularly, the training dataset is divided into several subsets. For the subsets with sufficient training data, the relevant ANFIS models are trained using standard ANFIS learning algorithm, while for the subsets with sparse training data, the corresponding ANFIS models are interpolated through the use of ANFIS interpolation. Experimental results indicate that compared with the methods using sufficient training data, the proposed method can achieve very similar result, showing its effectiveness for situations where only sparse training data is available.

Black Box Watermarking for DNN Model Integrity Detection Using Label Loss

After significant investments of time and resources, the accuracy of deep neural network (DNN) models has reached commercially viable levels, leading to their increasing deployment on cloud platforms for commercial services. However, ongoing research indicates that the challenges facing deep neural network models are continually evolving, particularly with various attacks emerging to compromise their integrity. Deep neural networks are susceptible to poisoning attacks and backdoor attacks, both of which involve malicious fine-tuning of the deep models. Malicious fine-tuning can lead to unpredictable outputs from deep neural network models. Although at-tempts have been made to address this issue, these solutions often increase model complexity or diminish model performance. We propose a black-box watermarking technique based on trigger image sets, which can effectively detect malicious fine-tuning while also enabling copyright authentication. This watermarking technique builds upon black-box watermarking methods, leveraging trig-ger image sets and utilizing a two-stage alternating training approach to fine-tune the model. During training, a novel loss function is employed to optimize the trigger images, thereby embedding the watermark while preserving the model’s original classification capabilities. The proposed watermarking model is highly sensitive to malicious fine-tuning, resulting in unstable classification outcomes for trigger images. Ultimately, by inputting trigger image sets and analyzing the output of the watermarking model, the integrity of the deep neural network model can be verified. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in detecting the integrity of DNN models. © 2024 Codon Publications. All rights reserved.

Multimodal fake news is more deceptive than unimodal content and often has adverse social and economic impacts. However, most existing methods learn modal features from a single perspective, without considering simultaneously learning and sharing knowledge across modalities from different perspectives. Our work presents a novel Multi-View Mutual Learning (MVML) network for multimodal fake news detection, which explores the semantic relationship between words and scenes, as well as words and objects, and investigates the semantic connection that exists between global concepts and local objects from multiple perspectives. We first construct text-scenes and text-objects graphs respectively, and perform intra-graph inference to obtain multi-view features. Then, the multi-view fusion layer based on the cross-view attention mechanism interactively models the cross-view dependencies between the image and text. The extracted features before feeding into the final classifier are further processed via a feed-forward attention module, which adaptively reweights and aggregates the features for redundancy reduction. In addition, to exploit the respective advantages of two multi-view classifiers, we propose a mutual learning mechanism that allows them to perform knowledge distillation and align the learning targets. The proposed MVML is thoroughly assessed on four publicly available benchmark datasets, and the findings demonstrate that it outperforms the existing standard approaches. © 2023, The Authors. Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is essential in identifying test samples that deviate from the in-distribution (ID) data upon which a standard network is trained, ensuring network robustness and reliability. This paper introduces OOD knowledge distillation, a pioneering learning framework applicable whether or not training ID data is available, given a standard network. This framework harnesses unknown OOD-sensitive knowledge from the standard network to craft a certain binary classifier adept at distinguishing between ID and OOD samples. To accomplish this, we introduce Confidence Amendment (CA), an innovative methodology that transforms an OOD sample into an ID one while progressively amending prediction confidence derived from the standard network. This approach enables the simultaneous synthesis of both ID and OOD samples, each accompanied by an adjusted prediction confidence, thereby facilitating the training of a binary classifier sensitive to OOD. Theoretical analysis provides bounds on the generalization error of the binary classifier, demonstrating the pivotal role of confidence amendment in enhancing OOD sensitivity. Extensive experiments spanning various datasets and network architectures confirm the efficacy of the proposed method in detecting OOD samples. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Robust optimization for quantum reinforcement learning control using partial observations

The current quantum reinforcement learning control models often assume that the quantum states are known a priori for control optimization. However, full observation of the quantum state is experimentally infeasible due to the exponential scaling of the number of required quantum measurements on the number of qubits. In this paper, we investigate a robust reinforcement learning method using partial observations to overcome this difficulty. This control scheme is compatible with near-term quantum devices, where the noise is prevalent and predetermining the dynamics of the quantum state is practically impossible. We show that this simplified control scheme can achieve similar or even better performance when compared to the conventional methods relying on full observation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this scheme on examples of quantum state control and the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA). It has been shown that high-fidelity state control can be achieved even if the noise amplitude is at the same level as the control amplitude. Besides, an acceptable level of optimization accuracy can be achieved for a QAOA with a noisy control Hamiltonian. This robust control optimization model can be trained to compensate for the uncertainties in practical quantum computing.

In a real scenario, the image is often corrupted by complex degradation, and a lot of useful information is lost, which makes super-resolution (SR) reconstruction seriously ill-posed. To effectively solve such a problem, it is crucial to correctly exploit image prior knowledge. Although existing deep learning-based methods can obtain excellent results, they cannot deal with the complex degradation effectively, which would lead to the loss of texture details and the destruction of edge details. In this paper, an efficient multi-regularization method for SR is proposed, which can simultaneously exploit both internal and external image priors within a unified framework. The hybrid Tikhonov-TV prior and deep denoiser prior are introduced to constrain the reconstruction process. That is, the proposed model combines the superiority of the piecewise-smooth prior and deep prior. Moreover, an adaptive weight parameter is employed to make the hybrid component more detail-preserving. Experimental demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance in image detail protection than advanced methods.

Indoor positioning is of great importance to the era of mobile computing. Currently, much attention has been paid to RSS-based location for that it can provide position information without additional equipment. However, this method suffers from many challenges: (1) fingerprint ambiguity;(2) labor-intensive of fingerprint collection;(3) low efficiency of fingerprint matching. To get over these drawbacks, we provide a collaborative WiFi fingerprinting indoor positioning method using near relation. The base idea of this method is that interpolation method is used to enrich sparse Wi-Fi fingerprint. Near relation boundary is provided and Wi-Fi fingerprints is constrained to this region to reduce fingerprint ambiguity, which also can improve the efficiency of fingerprint matching. Extensive experiments show that a positioning accuracy of 3.8m can be achieved with the near relation under 1m interpolation density. © 2020 Authors.

Mathematical optimization is now widely regarded as an indispensable modeling and solution tool for the design of wireless communications systems. While optimization has played a significant role in the revolutionary progress in wireless communication and networking technologies from 1G to 5G and onto the future 6G, the innovations in wireless technologies have also substantially transformed the nature of the underlying mathematical optimization problems upon which the system designs are based and have sparked significant innovations in the development of methodologies to understand, to analyze, and to solve those problems. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of recent advances in mathematical optimization theory and algorithms for wireless communication system design. We begin by illustrating common features of mathematical optimization problems arising in wireless communication system design. We discuss various scenarios and use cases and their associated mathematical structures from an optimization perspective. We then provide an overview of recently developed optimization techniques in areas ranging from nonconvex optimization, global optimization, and integer programming, to distributed optimization and learning-based optimization. The key to successful solution of mathematical optimization problems is in carefully choosing or developing suitable algorithms (or neural network architectures) that can exploit the underlying problem structure.
