Micro Expression (ME) is the subtle facial expressions that people show when they express their inner feelings. To address the problem that micro-expression recognition is difficult and less accurate due to the small number of samples and uneven distribution of different categories, we propose a model framework to improve the accuracy of micro-expression recognition. The peak frames containing more key expression information in the micro-expression video sequences are extracted;SE-ResNeXt-50, an improved residual network with SE module, is used to extract features from the peak frames of micro-expressions, where the SE module can better learn the key information in the features, and ResNeXt simplifies the structure by replacing the dense structure with the sparse structure through group convolution, which improves the recognition efficiency. The recognition efficiency is improved by replacing the dense structure with the sparse structure by group convolution. At the same time, the Focal Loss loss function can better solve the model performance problem caused by the imbalance of micro-expression data. Simulation experiments are conducted on the micro-expression dataset CASME, and it is found that the improved residual network and peak frame improve the accuracy and F1 value of micro-expression recognition. The improved residual network and peak frame can reduce the effect of small data set, make the model have good fitting effect, and improve the performance of different categories, improve the recognition accuracy of micro-expressions, and have better recognition performance for micro-expression recognition. © 2023 IEEE.

Bootstrap-Based Layerwise Refining for Causal Structure Learning

Learning causal structures from observational data is critical for causal discovery and many machine learning tasks. Traditional constraint-based methods first adopt conditional independence (CI) tests to learn a global skeleton layer by layer and then orient the undirected edges to obtain a causal structure. However, the reliability of these statistical tests largely depends on the quality of data samples. In real-life scenarios, the presence of data noise or limited samples often makes many CI tests unreliable at each layer in the skeleton learning phase, leading to an inaccurate skeleton. As the number of layers increases, the inaccurate skeleton will continue to impair the skeleton construction of subsequent layers. Furthermore, an unreliable skeleton hampers the skeleton orientation procedure, resulting in an unsatisfactory causal structure. In this article, we propose a Bootstrap-based layerwise refining (BLR) algorithm for causal structure learning, which includes two new procedures to solve the above problems. First, BLR utilizes a novel layerwise skeleton refining procedure to construct the global skeleton layer by layer based on the bootstrap sampling. Second, BLR employs a collective skeleton orientation procedure that incorporates scoring techniques to collectively orient the global skeleton. The experimental results show that BLR outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the benchmark Bayesian Network datasets. © 2020 IEEE.

Personalized learner modeling uses learners’ historical behavior data to diagnose their cognitive abilities, a process known as Cognitive Diagnosis (CD). This is essential for web-based learning services such as learning resource recommendation and adaptive testing. However, prior studies have shown that CD models may unfairly correlate learners’ abilities with sensitive attributes (e.g., gender, region), leading to biased outcomes. While existing approaches mitigate this issue by decorrelating sensitive attributes from the modeling process, privacy concerns make collecting such attributes impractical. Furthermore, the presence of multiple sensitive attributes complicates fairness improvements. In this paper, we explore how to achieve fair personalized learner modeling without relying on any sensitive attribute input. We introduce a novel fairness objective tailored for personalized learner modeling and design a max-min strategy to facilitate both sensitive information inference and fair CD modeling. In the max step, we infer pseudo-labels by maximizing the fairness objective, while in the min step, we retrain the CD model by minimizing it. Additionally, we provide a theoretical guarantee that our framework reduces the upper bound of fairness generalization error. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly outperforms existing methods. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

A novel hybrid butterfly optimization algorithm for feature selection with sine cosine velocity in the high-dimensional classification data

Aiming at the shortcomings of the traditional butterfly optimization algorithm in solving the high-dimensional classification feature selection problem, which has low convergence and is prone to fall into local optimal solutions, a new hybrid butterfly optimization algorithm is proposed, i.e., HBOA-SCV (A novel hybrid butterfly optimization algorithm with sine cosine velocity). The algorithm is applied to solve a high-dimensional classification feature selection problem. Firstly, the algorithm's global exploration and local exploitation ability can be dynamically balanced by introducing inertia weight coefficients w based on multiple learning strategies. Secondly, using the updated speed position formula of the sine-cosine acceleration strategy, individual butterflies' autonomous search ability and convergence speed can be further improved. Finally, according to the fitness value of each butterfly individual, the moving step length and direction of the butterfly individual are automatically adjusted better to fit the actual search process of the butterfly individual, increase the search ability in the global range, and avoid the algorithm from falling into the local optimum. To verify the algorithm's effectiveness, 18 high-dimensional classification numbers are selected to carry out simulation and comparison experiments between HBOA-SCV and traditional BOA algorithm, five improved BOA algorithms and other comparative algorithms for high-dimensional classification data successively. The experimental results show that the average fitness value and classification accuracy of the HBOA-SCV algorithm are better than the comparison algorithm, thus verifying the superiority of the HBOA-SCV algorithm. © 2024 - IOS Press. Recommendation systems play a crucial role in helping college students find job opportunities. However, the sparsity of interactions in employment recommendation for college students poses a challenge for models based on historical user preferences. To address this issue, we propose a novel model called Ensemble Learning based Employment Recommendation under Interaction Sparsity for College Students (EERIS). The model comprises two components: a similarity information component that uses pooled users to determine the nearest neighbor in user similarity measurement, and a global interaction component that uses interaction vectors of user groups to enhance interactions. To evaluate the missing interactions, we propose a loss function called CellLoss. These components are combined based on ensemble learning to improve the model’s generalization and scalability. Our experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the EERIS model. Ablation experiments further confirm that each component positively contributes to the model’s performance. Additionally, we design a revised metric for better model testing. Overall, the proposed EERIS model effectively addresses the interaction sparsity in employment recommendation for college students and provides satisfactory recommendations to students. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Social platforms, while facilitating access to information, have also become saturated with a plethora of fake news, resulting in negative consequences. Automatic multimodal fake news detection is a worthwhile pursuit. Existing multimodal fake news datasets only provide binary labels of real or fake. However, real news is alike, while each fake news is fake in its own way. These datasets fail to reflect the mixed nature of various types of multimodal fake news. To bridge the gap, we construct an attributing multi-granularity multimodal fake news detection dataset AMG, revealing the inherent fake pattern. Furthermore, we propose a multi-granularity clue alignment model MGCA to achieve multimodal fake news detection and attribution. Experimental results demonstrate that AMG is a challenging dataset, and its attribution setting opens up new avenues for future research. © 2025, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). Multicomponent Similarity Graphs for Cross-Network Node Classification

Cross-network node classification aims to train a classifier for an unlabeled target network using a source network with rich labels. In applications, the degree of nodes mostly conforms to the long-tail distribution, i.e., most nodes in the network are tail nodes with sparse neighborhoods. The established methods focus on either the discrepancy cross network or the long tail in a single network. As for the cross-network node classification under long tail, the coexistence of sparsity of tail nodes and the discrepancy cross-network challenges existing methods for long tail or methods for the cross-network node classification. To this end, a multicomponent similarity graphs for cross-network node classification (MS-CNC) is proposed in this article. Specifically, in order to address the sparsity of the tail nodes, multiple component similarity graphs, including attribute and structure similarity graphs, are constructed for each network to enrich the neighborhoods of the tail nodes and alleviate the long-tail phenomenon. Then, multiple representations are learned from the multiple similarity graphs separately. Based on the multicomponent representations, a two-level adversarial model is designed to address the distribution difference across networks. One level is used to learn the invariant representations cross network in view of structure and attribute components separately, and the other level is used to learn the invariant representations in view of the fused structure and attribute graphs. Extensive experimental results show that the MS-CNC outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Impact Statement-Node classification is an important task in graph mining.
