Overview of Essential Components in deep learning reference-based super resolution methods

Reference-based super resolution (RefSR) aims to recover the lost details in a low-resolution image and generate a high-resolution result, guided by a high-resolution reference image with similar contents or textures. In contrast to the traditional single-image super-resolution, which focuses on the intrinsic properties of the single low-resolution image, the challenge of RefSR lies in matching and aggregating highly-related but misaligned reference images with low-resolution images. Several effective but complex designs have been proposed to address this challenge, which poses difficulties in implementing RefSR in real-world applications. In order to better understand the working mechanism of RefSR and design a more efficient and lightweight architecture, we provide a review about the essential components of the existing deep learning-based RefSR. We decompose and classify the common pipeline into four submodules according to the functionalities. Then, we summarize and describe the implementation details of the commonly-adopted approaches in each submodule. Finally, we discuss the challenges and promising research directions.

An ES-based model with contemporaneous and temporal aggregation for forecasting intermittent and lumpy retail demand

The demand for products in the retail industry is often characterized by intermittent and volatile patterns. Specifically, at the SKU level, the demand exhibits intermittent and lumpy behavior, which presents challenges for accurate forecasting due to demand fluctuations and interval uncertainty. This study proposes an exponential smoothing (ES)-based model, called ES-C-T, that incorporates contemporaneous and temporal aggregation to forecast intermittent and lumpy retail demand. The ES-C-T model consists of three stages. Firstly, the ES model predicts the sales of each product by aggregating contemporaneously across all stores, and the resulting predictions are allocated to the SKU level using a weight vector. Secondly, the ES model forecasts the sales of each SKU by aggregating temporally within each store. Finally, the ES-C-T model derives a weight coefficient based on the predictions from the first and second stages, adjusts the initial predictions, and utilizes this as the final forecast. To validate the effectiveness of the ES-C-T model, sales data from a large Chinese convenience store chain are employed. The results demonstrate that the proposed ES-C-T model outperforms the benchmark model in terms of MAE, RMSE, and WRMSSE, effectively predicting retail sales for intermittent and lumpy demand.

Next-POI recommendation aims to explore from user check-in sequence to predict the next possible location to be visited. Existing methods are often difficult to model the implicit association of multi-modal data with user choices. Moreover, traditional methods struggle to fully explore the variation of user preferences at variable time intervals. To tackle these limitations, we propose a Multi-Modal Temporal knowledge Graph-aware Sub-graph Embedding approach (Mandari). We first construct a novel Multi-Modal Temporal knowledge Graph. Based on the proposed knowledge graph, we integrate multi-modal information and leverage the graph attention network to calculate sub-graph prediction probability. Next, we implement a temporal knowledge mining method to model the segmentation and periodicity of user check-in and obtain temporal prediction probability. Finally, we fuse temporal prediction probability with the previous sub-graph prediction probability to obtain the final result. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

Deep learning approaches for multimodal aspect-level sentiment classification (MALSC) often require extensive data, which is costly and time-consuming to obtain. To mitigate this, current methods typically fine-tune small-scale pretrained models like BERT and BART with few-shot examples. While these models have shown success, Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) offer significant advantages due to their greater capacity and ability to understand nuanced language in both zero-shot and few-shot settings. However, there is limited work on fine-tuning LVLMs for MALSC. A major challenge lies in selecting few-shot examples that effectively capture the underlying patterns in data for these LVLMs. To bridge this research gap, we propose an acquisition function designed to select challenging samples for the few-shot learning of LVLMs for MALSC. We compare our approach, Verification and ZERO-shot feedback acquisition (VERO), with diverse acquisition functions for few-shot learning in MALSC. Our experiments show that VERO outperforms prior methods, achieving an F1 score improvement of up to 6.07% on MALSC benchmark datasets. © 2025, Association for the Advancement of Artificial.

Numerous redundant and irrelevant features, and outliers are usually contained in high-dimensional data whose presence, if ignored, can bring detrimental effects on the performance of data processing tasks. Feature selection as a trending topic in a great deal of domains has been greatly concerned, which can effectively deal with noise and outlier. In this work, we propose a novel unsupervised method that unifies the explicit feature selective matrix learning and structured graph learning into a framework. An explicit selection matrix only consisting of 0 and 1 are designed, which can be integrated into locally linear embedding, and can be effectively and efficiently solved with closed-form solution. Furthermore, we take into account the local consistency between the samples so that the low dimensional manifold structures of samples can be preserved to a better degree. Instead of using the pre-defined similarity matrix to construct graph, we make use of the way of learning to obtain the adaptive graph. Besides, for the purpose of exploiting the cluster structure of data, we impose a rank constraint on the graph. Notably, both explicit selection matrix and intrinsic structure are learned in low-dimensional feature subspace, and thus the proposed methodology is more straightforward. We present an effective and efficient algorithm for the resulting problem based on alternative optimization strategy, and establish its convergence and computational complexity analysis results. Extensive experiments verify that our proposed approach can significantly outperform advanced methods. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

QGEval: Benchmarking Multi-dimensional Evaluation for Question Generation

Automatically generated questions often suffer from problems such as unclear expression or factual inaccuracies, requiring a reliable and comprehensive evaluation of their quality. Human evaluation is widely used in the field of question generation (QG) and serves as the gold standard for automatic metrics. However, there is a lack of unified human evaluation criteria, which hampers consistent and reliable evaluations of both QG models and automatic metrics. To address this, we propose QGEval, a multi-dimensional Evaluation benchmark for Question Generation, which evaluates both generated questions and existing automatic metrics across 7 dimensions: fluency, clarity, conciseness, relevance, consistency, answerability, and answer consistency. We demonstrate the appropriateness of these dimensions by examining their correlations and distinctions. Through consistent evaluations of QG models and automatic metrics with QGEval, we find that 1) most QG models perform unsatisfactorily in terms of answerability and answer consistency, and 2) existing metrics fail to align well with human judgments when evaluating generated questions across the 7 dimensions. Economic dispatch (ED) is one of the critical tasks in a power system’s optimization issues, but its characteristics with non-convex, high-dimensional, non-linear, and non-differentiable, so that caused solutions are more challenging in reality. This paper suggests an enhanced group search optimizer (EGSO) for solving the ED model with the valve-point effect and the different fuels. The EGSO adopts the original group search optimizer (GSO) by changing polar to Cartesian coordinate’s conversion and adding cyclic translation operators to the search behavior of the finder and walker to avoid falling into local optimal and slow convergence of the GSO. In the experiment section, the testing power systems of the ED model are used to validate the EGSO performance. The experimental results reveal that EGSO outperformed the other algorithms regarding convergence speed, the time required to complete calculations, and impacts with lower fuel cost. Additionally, with excellent outcomes in optimization issues involving multiple local optimal values show the EGSO is practical, quick, and efficient in addressing the challenging ED model. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

SP3: Enhancing Structured Pruning via PCA Projection

Structured pruning is a widely used technique for reducing the size of pre-trained language models (PLMs), but current methods often overlook the potential of compressing the hidden dimension (d) in PLMs, a dimension critical to model size and efficiency. This paper introduces a novel structured pruning approach, Structured Pruning with PCA Projection (SP3), targeting the effective reduction of d by projecting features into a space defined by principal components before masking. Extensive experiments on benchmarks (GLUE and SQuAD) show that SP3 can reduce d by 70%, compress 94% of the BERTbase model, and maintain over 96% accuracy and outperform other methods that compress d by 6% in accuracy at the same compression ratio. Detection of ChatGPT Fake Science with the xFakeSci Learning Algorithm

Generative AI tools exemplified by ChatGPT are becoming a new reality. This study is motivated by the premise that "AI generated content may exhibit a distinctive behavior that can be separated from scientific articles". In this study, we show how articles can be generated using means of prompt engineering for various diseases and conditions. We then show how we tested this premise in two phases and prove its validity. Subsequently, we introduce xFakeSci, a novel learning algorithm, that is capable of distinguishing ChatGPT-generated articles from publications produced by scientists. The algorithm is trained using network models driven from both sources. To mitigate overfitting issues, we incorporated a calibration step that is built upon data-driven heuristics, including proximity and ratios. Specifically, from a total of a 3952 fake articles for three different medical conditions, the algorithm was trained using only 100 articles, but calibrated using folds of 100 articles. As for the classification step, it was performed using 300 articles per condition. The actual label steps took place against an equal mix of 50 generated articles and 50 authentic PubMed abstracts. The testing also spanned publication periods from 2010 to 2024 and encompassed research on three distinct diseases: cancer, depression, and Alzheimer’s. Further, we evaluated the accuracy of the xFakeSci algorithm against some of the classical data mining algorithms (e.g., Support Vector Machines, Regression, and Naive Bayes). The xFakeSci algorithm achieved F1 scores ranging from 80% to 94%, outperforming common data mining algorithms, which scored F1 values between 38% and 52%. We attribute the noticeable difference to the introduction of calibration and a proximity distance heuristic, which underscores this promising performance. Dual UAV Cluster-Assisted Maritime Physical Layer Secure Communications via Collaborative Beamforming

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be utilized as relay platforms to assist maritime wireless communications. However, complex channels and multipath effects at sea can adversely affect the quality of UAV transmitted signals. Collaborative beamforming (CB) can enhance the signal strength and range to assist the UAV relay for remote maritime communications. However, due to the open nature of UAV channels, security issue requires special consideration. This paper proposes a dual UAV cluster-assisted system via CB to achieve physical layer security in maritime wireless communications. Specifically, one UAV cluster forms a maritime UAV-enabled virtual antenna array (MUVAA) relay to forward data signals to the remote legitimate vessel, and the other UAV cluster forms an MUVAA jammer to send jamming signals to the remote eavesdropper. In this system, we formulate a secure and energy-efficient maritime communication multi-objective optimization problem (SEMCMOP) to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the legitimate vessel, minimize the SINR of the eavesdropping vessel and minimize the total flight energy consumption of UAVs. Since the SEMCMOP is an NP-hard and large-scale optimization problem, we propose an improved swarm intelligence optimization algorithm with chaotic solution initialization and hybrid solution update strategies to solve the problem. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other comparison algorithms, and it can achieve more efficient signal transmission by using the CB-based method.
