This paper explores a novel multi-modal alternating learning paradigm pursuing a reconciliation between the exploitation of uni-modal features and the exploration of cross-modal interactions. This is motivated by the fact that current paradigms of multi-modal learning tend to explore multi-modal features simultaneously. The resulting gradient prohibits further exploitation of the features in the weak modality, leading to modality competition, where the dominant modality overpowers the learning process. To address this issue, we study the modality-alternating learning paradigm to achieve reconcilement. Specifically, we propose a new method called ReconBoost to update a fixed modality each time. Herein, the learning objective is dynamically adjusted with a reconcilement regularization against competition with the historical models. By choosing a KL-based reconcilement, we show that the proposed method resembles Friedman's Gradient-Boosting (GB) algorithm, where the updated learner can correct errors made by others and help enhance the overall performance. The major difference with the classic GB is that we only preserve the newest model for each modality to avoid overfitting caused by ensembling strong learners. Furthermore, we propose a memory consolidation scheme and a global rectification scheme to make this strategy more effective. In neighborhood rough set model, the majority rule based neighborhood classifier (NC) is easy to be misjudged with the increasing of the size of information granules. To remedy this deficiency, we propose a neighborhood collaborative classifier (NCC) based on the idea of collaborative representation based classification (CRC). NCC first performs feature selection with neighborhood rough set, and then instead of solving the classification problem by the majority rule, NCC solves a similar problem with collaborative representation among the neighbors of each unseen sample. Experiments on UCI data sets demonstrate that: 1) Our NCC achieves satisfactory performance in larger neighborhood information granules when compared with NC; 2) NCC reduces the size of dictionary when compared with CRC.

Synergies quantification and evolution on air pollutant and CO2 emissions driven by different socio-economic effects

Realizing a synergistic reduction of air pollutant and CO2 emissions (APCE) is an important approach to promote a green socio-economic transformation in China, and it can provide a solid foundation for the achievement of clean energy production and climate action under a sustainable development goal framework. The objective of this study is to explore the quantitative relationship and evolution of synergies between APCE in industrial sectors driven by different socio-economic effects from 2007 to 2020 in China. The results show the main sectors of pollutant emissions had consistency, however, large differences in the reduction efficiency of emissions exist among pollutants. The efficiency in reducing CO2 emissions was about 48% lower when compared with reductions of SO2 (95%), NOX (86%), and smoke and dust (83%) emissions from 2007 to 2020. The effects of improved technology were the main contributor to a reduction in pollutant emissions, but the synergies between APCE driving by it were not achieved. While the synergies between APCE driven by structure and final demand effects were significant. The synergies between NOX and CO2 emissions were stronger driven by final effects structure and types, with correlation coefficients of 1.06 and 1.13, respectively. Besides, the degree of synergistic reduction between APCE in most industrial sectors was around zero. Therefore, the efficiency of synergistic pollution reduction should be improved with the development of a synergistic governance system for industrial sectors. © 2024, The Authors. In this paper, we study the nurse rostering problem that considers multiple units and many soft time-related constraints. An efficient branch and price solution approach that relies on a fast algorithm to solve the pricing subproblem of the column generation process is presented. For the nurse rostering problem, its pricing subproblem can be formulated as a shortest path problem with resource constraints, which has been the backbone of several solutions for several classical problems like vehicle routing problems. However, approaches that perform well on these problems cannot be used since most constraints in the nurse rostering problem are soft. Based on ideas borrowed from global constraints in constraint programming to model rostering problems, an efficient dynamic programming algorithm with novel label definitions and dominating rules specific to soft time-related constraints is proposed. In addition, several acceleration strategies are employed to improve the branch and price algorithm. Computational results on instances of different sizes indicate that the proposed algorithm is a promising solution for the nurse rostering problem with multiple units. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Spatial public goods games on any population structure

Understanding the emergence of cooperation in spatially structured populations has advanced significantly in the context of pairwise games, but the fundamental theory of group-based public goods games (PGGs) remains less explored. Here, we provide theoretical conditions under which cooperation thrive in spatial PGGs on any population structure, which are accurate under weak selection. We find that PGGs can support cooperation across all kinds of model details and on almost all network structures in contrast to pairwise games. For example, a class of networks that would otherwise fail to produce cooperation, such as star graphs, are particularly conducive to cooperation in spatial PGGs. This fundamental advantage of spatial PGGs derives from reciprocity through second-order interactions, allowing local structures such as the clustering coefficient to play positive roles. We also verify the robustness of spatial PGGs on empirical networks where pairwise games cannot support cooperation, which implies that PGGs could be a universal interaction mode in real-world systems. © 2024, CC BY.

The Minority Matters: A Diversity-Promoting Collaborative Metric Learning Algorithm

Collaborative Metric Learning (CML) has recently emerged as a popular method in recommendation systems (RS), closing the gap between metric learning and Collaborative Filtering. Following the convention of RS, existing methods exploit unique user representation in their model design. This paper focuses on a challenging scenario where a user has multiple categories of interests. Under this setting, we argue that the unique user representation might induce preference bias, especially when the item category distribution is imbalanced. To address this issue, we propose a novel method called Diversity-Promoting Collaborative Metric Learning (DPCML), with the hope of considering the commonly ignored minority interest of the user. The key idea behind DPCML is to include a multiple set of representations for each user in the system. Based on this embedding paradigm, user preference toward an item is aggregated from different embeddings by taking the minimum item-user distance among the user embedding set. Furthermore, we observe that the diversity of the embeddings for the same user also plays an essential role in the model. To this end, we propose a diversity control regularization term to accommodate the multi-vector representation strategy better. Theoretically, we show that DPCML could generalize well to unseen test data by tackling the challenge of the annoying operation that comes from the minimum value. With the popularity of monocular videos generated by video sharing and live broadcasting applications, reconstructing and editing dynamic scenes in stationary monocular cameras has become a special but anticipated technology. In contrast to scene reconstructions that exploit multi-view observations, the problem of modeling a dynamic scene from a single view is significantly more under-constrained and ill-posed. Inspired by recent progress in neural rendering, we present a novel framework to tackle 4D decomposition problem for dynamic scenes in monocular cameras. Our framework utilizes decomposed static and dynamic feature planes to represent 4D scenes and emphasizes the learning of dynamic regions through dense ray casting. Inadequate 3D clues from a single-view and occlusion are also particular challenges in scene reconstruction. To overcome these difficulties, we propose deep supervised optimization and ray casting strategies. With experiments on various videos, our method generates higher-fidelity results than existing methods for single-view dynamic scene representation.

Semi-supervised learning is becoming increasingly popular in medical image segmentation because of its ability to exploit large amounts of unlabelled data to extract additional information. However, most existing semi-supervised segmentation methods focus only on extracting information from unlabelled data, ignoring the potential of labelled data to further improve model performance. In this paper, we propose a new framework for Intra-Sample Cross Reconstruction Networks (ICR-Net) that utilises labelled data to help the network extract information from unlabelled data, thereby guiding the network’s regularisation learning. Our method contains two modules: Intra-Sample Cross Reconstruction (ICR) module and Synergistic Consistency Constraints (SCC) module. The ICR module processes the labelled data features in a more fine-grained manner, thus enabling the network to learn and capture the key patterns and features in the inputs more efficiently, and the SCC guides the network’s regularised learning by formulating additional model regularisations. Experiments on the LA dataset and the pancreas dataset show that our proposed framework is more effective than current state-of-the-art methods in medical image segmentation tasks.
