A novel visible-infrared image fusion framework for smart city

Image fusion technology is widely used in different areas and can integrate complementary and relevant information of source images captured by multiple sensors into a unitary synthetic image. Image fusion technology as an efficient way to integrate information from multiple images plays a more and more important role in smart city. The quality of fused image affects the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of the related applications. Existing sparse representation-based image fusion methods consist of overly complete and redundant dictionaries learning and sparse coding. However, overly complete and redundant dictionary does not consider the discriminative ability of dictionaries that may seriously affect the image fusion. A good dictionary is the key to a successful image fusion technique. To construct a discriminative dictionary, a novel framework that integrates an image-patches clustering and online dictionary learning methods is proposed for visible-infrared image fusion. The comparison experiments with existing solutions are used to validate and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution for image fusion. Copyright © 2018 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Illumination, occlusion, pose and expression variations are the most common challenging problems for face recognition in many real-world applications. However, existing face recognition methods are proposed to handle part of these variations. In this paper, we propose a robust facial descriptor to address this issue. First, we apply a chain of three processing to tackle the illumination variation. Second, we compute the facial sparse local descriptor to handle the occlusion, pose, and expression variations. Experimental evaluation on the FRGC database shows that our approach is able to achieve very promising recognition rates under uncontrolled environments. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG.

In order to reduce traffic accidents and road congestion in many cities, vehicle speed estimation is very critical and important to observe speed limitation law and traffic conditions. In this paper, we present a speed estimation method of vehicles based on road monitoring video-images. Firstly, we set up a word coordinate system on the license plate in one vehicle image. Next, for small vehicles in China, according to the known length and width of the license plate, the spatial transformation matrix between the word coordinate system and the image coordinate system is derived. Then, based on the spatial transform matrix, compute the corner spatial coordinates of the license plate in each frame, and then estimate the vehicle speed. Finally, experimental results on read data have shown that the vehicle speed can be estimated within the acceptable error range (±3 km/h), and then have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed vehicle speed estimation method. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG.

Weakly nonlinear analysis for car-following model with consideration of cooperation and time delays

In traffic systems, cooperative driving has attracted the researchers’ attentions. A lot of works attempt to understand the effects of cooperative driving behavior and/or time delays on traffic flow dynamics for specific traffic flow model. This paper is a new attempt to investigate analyses of linear stability and weak nonlinear for the general car-following model with consideration of cooperation and time delays in cyber-physical perspective. We derive the linear stability condition and study that how the combinations of cooperation and time delays affect the stability of traffic flow. Burgers equation and Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation for the generic car-following model considering cooperation and time delays are derived. Their solitary wave solutions and constraint conditions are concluded. We investigate the property of cooperative optimal velocity(OV) model which estimates the combinations of cooperation and time delays about the evolution of traffic waves using both analytic and numerical methods. The results indicate that delays and cooperation are model-dependent, and cooperative behavior could inhibit the stabilization of traffic flow. Moreover, delays of sensing to relative motion are easy to trigger the traffic waves;delays of sensing to host vehicle are beneficial to relieve the instability effect a certain extent. High-payload completely reversible data hiding in encrypted images by an interpolation technique

We present a new high-payload joint reversible data-hiding scheme for encrypted images. Instead of embedding data in the encrypted image directly, the content owner first uses an interpolation technique to estimate whether the location can be used for embedding and generates a location map before encryption. Next, the data hider embeds the additional data through flipping the most significant bits （MSBs） of the encrypted image according to the location map. At the receiver side, before extracting the additional data and reconstructing the image, the receiver decrypts the image first. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve real reversibility, which means data extraction and image recovery are free of error. Moreover, our scheme can embed more payloads than most existing reversible data hiding schemes in encrypted images.

Object measurement based on surveillance video-images is a critical task in the field of intelligent video surveillance. In this paper, we proposed an object measurement system based on surveillance video-images. Firstly, considering the scene of the urban video surveillance, a novel calibration tool is designed for such scene, which is portable, collapsible and operational. Next, based on the portable calibration tool, the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the surveillance camera can be estimated. Then, an object measurement system based on surveillance video-images is developed, which include the acquisition module of calibration data, the computation module of camera parameters, the selection module of measurement endpoint and the computation module of object. Finally, in the traffic checkpoint, experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the object measurement system. The results show that as long as the surveillance camera is one-time calibrated based on the portable calibration tool, this system can measure the object on the surveillance video-images captured by the calibrated camera. What’s more, experimental results have shown that the object measurement system can be used to estimate the vehicle speed and measure the body height within the acceptable error range, and then have demonstrated the effectiveness of the object measurement system. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Exploring joint encoding of multi-direction local binary patterns for image classification

Local binary pattern (LBP) has been investigated as prominent feature in image classification for decades because of its strong discriminative ability and simple computation complexity, however, it extracts patterns in local circular space, ignoring the patterns located in local line-geometry space. In this paper, we propose a novel feature named joint encoding of multi-direction LBP (JEMDLBP) for image representation. Concretely, due to direction information are highly valuable to reflect the fundamental properties of images, we firstly develop direction LBP (DLBP) codes in local line space of four directions, including 0∘, 45∘, 90∘ and 135∘ directions. Secondly, the DLBP dominant patterns are generated by employing statistical analysis based on the occurrence rates of DLBP codes, which has high adaptive power to database and direction. Thirdly, we employ joint encoding strategy to capture co-occurrence patterns between adjacent directions with the hope that stronger local line structure can be extracted. Finally, to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of JEMDLBP, extensive experiments are carried out on eight databases (four face recognition, one face expression recognition, one palmprint recognition, two texture classification). Excellent results show that JEMDLBP achieves a performance that is competitive or better than several related LBP-like descriptors.

In this paper, the combination of Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and a novel forecasting algorithm called XGBoost was proposed for food internal quality evaluation. First, the original NIR spectral data was preprocessed by Savitzky-Golay smoothing method to reduce the influence of noises. Secondly, the preprocessed spectra was submitted to PCA to extract essential information. Finally, the model was established by using the XGBoost algorithm. The performance of the proposed model was examined by comparing with different models including back propagation neural network (BPNN) and support vector regression (SVR). The results showed that the new proposed model outperformed other two models and this XGBoost-based tool was suitable for food internal quality control. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To improve the efficiency and the precision of short-term load forecasting of the electric vehicle charging stations, this paper proposed a new algorithm for short-term load forecasting for electric vehicle charging stations based on time series distance measuring. Applying the editing distance to load the load sequence into the load segment and the time segment respectively to measure, so as to measure the distance between the load sequences accurately, And simplify the complexity of model which can improve the efficiency of prediction. Based on the actual historical load data of electric vehicle charging stations, the simulation analysis is given to verify that the proposed method has high prediction efficiency and accuracy.

The UML behavioral models are used in understanding and communicating the problem domain concepts,during the requirement analysis phase of system *** absence of formal semantics for UML behavioral models makes it difficult to build automated tools for their analysis,simulation and validation. These semantics should be well defined based on a formal language that yields the fundamental requirements for a rigorous validation of the specification models. In this paper, an approach is proposed for formal analysis and simulation of the UML behavioral models. Initially, we define UML activity diagram semantics. These semantics are translated into a Coloured Petri Nets(CPN). Hence, In order to allow a more concrete model behavior analysis, we coined the mapping rules from the specification models composed of objects and events. The results of analysis are in the form of a CPN-Tools report by means of state space analysis or model checking, to illustrate the proposed methodology we used a case study.
