Species-specific and generalized allometric biomass models for eight Fagaceae species in the understory of evergreen broadleaved forests in subtropical China

Wetland ecosystems have become one of the long-term solutions for mitigating global climate change due to their strong carbon sequestration ***,the key carbon cycle processes in wetland ecosystems still lack a systematic *** the context of wetland protection and restoration,there is still a lack of consensus on the technical pathways to realize carbon sink multiplication in wetland *** this paper,the key processes of carbon cycle,such as photosynthetic carbon uptake,microbial carbon decomposition and carbon deposition and burial,are sorted out and summarized in four major wetland types,namely,swamp and peat wetlands,river and riparian wetlands,lake and lakeshore wetlands,and estuarine and coastal *** on the key processes of carbon cycle,three technological pathways for carbon sink multiplication are proposed,including,vegetation carbon sequestration and sink enhancement technology,soil carbon emission reduction technology and carbon deposition and burial *** key technologies under each pathway are further *** the carbon sink effects of the carbon sink technologies in different wetland types are qualitatively ***,wetland protection and restoration methods in corresponding regions are given in the light of the regional characteristics of wetlands in *** will provide a scientific basis for the strategy of doubling the carbon sinks of China′s wetland ecosystems.

Effects of long-term experimental warming on phyllosphere epiphytic bacterial and fungal communities of four alpine plants

Off-farm employment,agriculture production activities,and household dietary diversity in environmentally and economically vulnerable areas of Asia

Access to off-farm employment has been expected to be a critical approach to ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition,two important targets of achieving Zero *** study aims to investigate the role of off-farm employment in improving dietary diversity through substitution effect and complementary effect with agricultural production activities and income *** study adopts Poisson/Tobit/Probit/OLS regressions and the instrument variable method based on the primary survey data collected among 1,282 households at 12 sites in environmentally and economically vulnerable areas of China,Nepal,Cambodia,Thailand,and Myanmar in *** results show that off-farm employment is positively associated with household dietary diversity and the consumption of flesh meat,fish and other aquatic animals,fruits,and milk and dairy products,which are rich in protein and *** results of mechanism analysis show that off-farm employment contributes to household dietary diversity by improving crop diversity,especially for poor households,boosting the probability of livestock raising for households with the middle one-third disposal income,and increasing household *** positive association between off-farm employment and household dietary diversity is much higher for households with the bottom one-third disposal income,low illiteracy,and from upper-middle income *** findings imply that off-farm employment does play a vital role in achieving multiple benefits of poverty alleviation,malnutrition reduction,and agrobiodiversity conservation in environmentally and economically vulnerable ***,it may enlarge the gaps in dietary diversity between households with low human capital and from low and lower-middle income countries and those with high human capital and from middle-high countries.

Five-year warming does not change soil organic carbon stock but alters its chemical composition in an alpine peatland

Climate warming may promote soil organic carbon(SOC)decomposition and alter SOC stocks in terrestrial ecosystems,which would in turn affect climate *** manipulated a warming experiment using open-top chambers to investigate the effect of warming on SOC stock and chemical composition in an alpine peatland in Zoigêon the eastern Tibetan Plateau,*** showed that 5 years of warming soil temperatures enhanced ecosystem respiration during the growing season,promoted above-and belowground plant biomass,but did not alter the SOC ***,labile O-alkyl C and relatively recalcitrant aromatic C contents decreased,and alkyl C content *** also increased the amount of SOC stored in the silt-clay fraction(<0.053 mm),but this was offset by warming-induced decreases in the SOC stored within micro-and macroaggregates(0.053–0.25 and>0.25 mm,respectively).These changes in labile and recalcitrant C were largely associated with warming-induced increases in soil microbial biomass C,fungal diversity,enzyme activity,and functional gene abundance related to the decomposition of labile and recalcitrant C *** warming-induced accumulation of SOC stored in the silt-clay fraction could increase SOC persistence in alpine peatland *** findings suggest that mechanisms mediated by soil microbes account for the changes in SOC chemical composition and SOC in different aggregate size fractions,which is of great significance when evaluating SOC stability under climate warming conditions.

Temporal stability responses to nitrogen addition in Tibetan alpine grasslands:A community composition perspective

Plant community composition typically undergoes progressive changes along environmental ***,most experimental studies have focused on individual communities,so it remains unclear how exogenous nutrient inputs affect the stability of plant communities along environmental *** a rainfall gradient on the northern Tibetan Plateau,we conducted an 8-year nitrogen(N)addition experiment in four alpine grasslands:alpine desert steppe(ADS),alpine steppe(AS),alpine meadow steppe(AMS),alpine meadow(AM),and we used twoway ANOVA to examine the effects of N addition on the temporal stability of these different alpine *** found that community aboveground biomass showed saturation trends in AM and AMS with increasing N gradients,while there was no change in AS and a gradual increase in *** temporal stability showed different patterns of gradual decreases in ADS and AM,and a unimodal trend in AMS with increasing N ***,N addition had no effect on the temporal stability of *** species stability was the controlling factor for alpine grasslands along the transect,while the effect of asynchrony gradually increased with decreasing *** findings highlight that community composition,especially the dominant species,along the environmental gradient can mediate the effects of N inputs on community temporal ***,the conservation and restoration of the dominant species are particularly important under future scenarios of increased atmospheric N deposition.

Current status of coastal blue carbon assessment: Theory, methods,and carbon sequestration pathways

Coastal wetlands possess significant carbon sequestration rates and storage capabilities. Clarifying the methods for evaluating coastal wetland carbon sinks and identifying existing issues are essential for accurately assessing coastal blue carbon,understanding the carbon balance between terrestrial-coastal-marine ecosystems, and advancing the “dual carbon” goal. This paper reviews the detailed processes of coastal wetland carbon cycling and summarizes the challenges and difficulties in defining, delineating, and identifying the boundaries of coastal wetlands. We generalize current carbon sink evaluation methods across different dimensions by constructing a “black box theory”. In addition, based on the “white box theory”, we propose a net ecosystem carbon balance model for carbon sink assessment, providing a theoretical foundation for enhancing the understanding of coastal wetland carbon sinks and optimizing the evaluation system for coastal blue carbon functionality. We also systematically summarize the current status of carbon sources and sinks in China's coastal wetlands and propose a technical framework for emission reduction and carbon sequestration enhancement through integrated management of coastal zones and wetlands and regulation of key wetland ecological processes, with the aim of increasing the potential of blue carbon in mitigating climate change. Finally, based on the current research gaps, we outline future research priorities for coastal wetland blue carbon.

Spatio-temporal patterns of temperature extremes and their response to atmospheric circulation factors in China from 1961 to 2020

Changes in surface temperature extremes have become a global *** on the daily lowest temperature(TN)and daily highest temperature(TX)data from 2138weather stations in China from 1961 to 2020,we calculated 14 extreme temperature indices to analyze the characteristics of extreme temperature *** widespread changes observed in all extreme temperature indices suggest that China experienced significant warming during this ***,the cold extreme indices,such as cold nights,cold days,frost days,icing days,and the cold spell duration index,decreased significantly by-6.64,-2.67,-2.96,-0.97,and-1.01 days/decade,*** contrast,we observed significant increases in warm extreme *** number of warm nights,warm days,summer days,tropical nights,and warm spell duration index increased by 8.44,5.18,2.81,2.50,and 1.66d/decade,*** addition,the lowest TN,highest TN,lowest TX,and highest TX over the entire period rose by 0.47,0.22,0.26,and 0.16℃/decade,***,using Pearson's correlation and wavelet coherence analyses,this study identified a strong association between extreme temperature indices and atmospheric circulation factors,with varying correlation strengths and resonance periods across different time-frequency domains.

Pollution characteristics and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during heating season in Beijing

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and their nitrated derivatives(NPAHs)attract continuous attention due to their outstanding carcinogenicity and *** order to investigate the diurnal variations,sources,formation mechanism,and health risk assessment of them in heating season,particulate matter(PM)were collected in Beijing urban area from December 26,2017 to January 17,*** and NPAHs in PM were quantitatively analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).Average daily concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs were(78±54)ng/m^(3)and(783±684)pg/m^(3),*** concentrations of them were significantly higher at nighttime than at daytime,and NPAHs concentrations were 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than PAHs *** the heating season,the dominant species of PAHs include benzo[b]fluoranthene,fluoranthene,pyrene,and chrysene,while 9-nitroanthracene,2+3-nitrofluoranthene,and 2-nitropyrene were dominant species for *** were found to have a single peak during heating and to be primarily distributed in the 0.4-0.7μm particle *** emissions such as biomass burning,coal combustion,and traffic emissions were the major sources of *** were produced by the primary source of vehicle emissions and the secondary reaction triggered by OH radicals,as well as biomass burning during *** to the health risk assessment,the total carcinogenic risk was higher in adults than in *** upon oral ingestion,the carcinogenic risk in children was higher than that of adults,but the risk of adults was higher than children through skin contact and respiratory inhalation.

Carbon transportation,transformation,and sedimentation processes at the land-river-estuary continuum

In terrestrial ecosystems,carbon(C)transportation and C pool transformation processes both occur at the landriver-estuary ***,C budget and C balance processes are generally critical in achieving the C neutrality of terrestrial *** study analyzes key C transportation processes at multiple interfaces that collectively constitute the land-river-estuary continuum,discusses C transportation and sedimentation processes at the land-river interface,and reveals aquatic plant C sequestration coupling processes and associated *** mechanisms of inorganic-organic C pools are also investigated here as well as a systematic evaluation of C transport flux within the different interfaces that constitute the land-river-estuary *** show that the net C sink of terrestrial ecosystems was 1.70 Pg C yr^(−1),wherein the gross primary productivity(GPP)of global terrestrial vegetation reached 123 Pg C yr^(−1),while rock weathering also consumed 0.30 Pg C yr^(−1)of atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)).Subsequently,the C transported by the land-river-estuary continuum reached 1.70 Pg C yr^(−1).During this process,0.20 Pg C is deposited and buried in inland water and 1.00 Pg C escapes from inland water systems each ***,only 0.85 Pg C is transported to the ***,this study clarifies control mechanisms of C transportation and transformation processes at the land-river-estuary *** aim of this study is to provide an important scientific basis for the quantitative analysis of C sources and sinks at the land-river-estuary continuum and C neutrality of the biosphere.
