Heart rate (HR) signal analysis is widely used in the medicine and medical research area. Physical activities (PA) are commonly recognized to greatly affect the changes of heart rate. A method of Evolutionary Neural Network - Neuro-evolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) is used to build a PA-based HR predictor model. Through special coding, crossover and mutation operator, NEAT can implement network topology and connectivity weights evolution simultaneously. The common problem in evolutionary neural network, like competing conventions, how to protect the new innovation are effectively solved. The experimental results demonstrated the application potential of the approach.

Speckle is a granular noise that inherently exists in all types of coherent imaging systems. This paper presents a quantitative study on five despeckling methods such as frost filter, kuan filter, speckle reducing an isotropic diffusion, homomorphic filter and wavelet filter. We select six objective evaluation parameters, such as signal-to-ratio, contrast signal-to-noise ratio, figure of merit, least absolute error, edge protection factor, signal-to-minimum mean square error ratio, to quantify the performance of these filters. The comparative study will provide some parameter comparative reference for selecting a suitable filter in the ultrasound image processing.

Although correlation filter based trackers have recently demonstrated excellent performance, they still suffer from the boundary effects. The cosine window is introduced to alleviate the boundary affects, which however may result in poor performance in case of occlusion or fast motion. To address this problem, we propose a simple yet effective framework, which builds a spatially attentive model with multiple features to guide the detection of the correlation filter based trackers. The proposed method not only can breakthrough the spatial extent of cosine window, but also can provides prior information about the target object. Moreover, to model a robust object prior, we propose a generic strategy for adaptive fusion and update of multiple features. Extensive experiments over multiple tracking benchmarks demonstrate the superior accuracy and real-time performance of our methods compared to the state-of-the-art trackers.

Canine EEG Helps Human: Cross-Species and Cross-Modality Epileptic Seizure Detection via Multi-Space Alignment

Epilepsy significantly impacts global health, affecting about 65 million people worldwide, along with various animal species. The diagnostic processes of epilepsy are often hindered by the transient and unpredictable nature of seizures. Here we propose a multi-space alignment approach based on cross-species and cross-modality electroencephalogram (EEG) data to enhance the detection capabilities and understanding of epileptic seizures. By employing deep learning techniques, including domain adaptation and knowledge distillation, our framework aligns cross-species and cross-modality EEG signals to enhance the detection capability beyond traditional within-species and within-modality models. Experiments on multiple surfaces and intracranial EEG datasets of humans and canines demonstrated substantial improvements in detection accuracy, achieving over 90% AUC scores for cross-species and cross-modality seizure detection with extremely limited labeled data from the target species/modality. To our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating heterogeneous data from different species and modalities to improve EEG-based seizure detection performance. This is a pilot study that provides insights into the challenges and potential of multi-species and multi-modality data integration, offering an effective solution for future work to collect huge EEG data to train large brain models. © 2024, CC BY.

The most commonly used implementation of handwritten digit recognition based on convolutional neural networks requires equipment with high computing power, which is not suitable for edge devices. Recently, spiking neural network (SNN) has received more attentions due to its low power consumption and real-time performance, but training SNN is very difficult. As a special SNN, liquid state machine (LSM) has the advantages of simple structure and easy training, so it is very suitable for handwritten digit recognition on edge devices. But it has no advantage in recognition accuracy. In order to improve the performance of LSM, its reservoir needs to be optimized. In this paper, an efficient local optimization strategy is proposed, improving the recognition accuracy of LSM by 11.8% with less the training time. In order to reduce the runtime, auto-encoder and feature screening are used to compress the input handwritten digit image. After feature compression, the input storage is reduced by 57%, and the runtime is reduced by 30%. This work provides an effective way to realize handwritten digit recognition on the edge devices. © 2023 SPIE.

A Pushing-Grasping Collaborative Method Based on Deep Q-Network Algorithm in Dual Viewpoints

In the field of intelligent manufacturing, robot grasping and sorting is an important content. However, in the traditional 2D camera-based robotic arm grasping method, the grasping efficiency is low and the grasping accuracy is low when facing the scene of stacking and occlusion. Insufficiency and other issues, a dual perspective-based deep reinforcement learning promotion and capture method is proposed. In this case, a novel method of pushing-grasping collaborative based on the deep Q-network in dual viewpoints is proposed in this paper. This method adopts an improved deep Q-network algorithm, with an RGB-D camera to obtain the information of objects’ RGB images and point clouds from two viewpoints, and combines the pushing and grasping actions, so that the trained manipulator can make the scenes better for grasping, so that it can perform well in more complicated grasping scenes. What’s more, we improved the reward function of the deep Q-network and propose the piecewise reward function to speed up the convergence of the deep Q-network. We trained different models and tried different methods in the V-REP simulation environment, and it drew a conclusion that the method proposed in this paper converges quickly and the success rate of grasping objects in unstructured scenes raises up to 83.5%. Besides, it shows the generalization ability and well performance when novel objects appear in the scenes that the manipulator has never grasped before. © 2021, CC BY.

Solving the optimal control problem with a free final time, such as suborbital launch vehicle (SLV) trajectory optimization with two control variables and multi-constraints ones based on particle swarm optimization (PSO), the smoothness of control variable can not be satisfied by linear interpolation method. A novel method including some improving strategies based on PSO for trajectory optimization is proposed, named LCPSO which is a kind of Cooperate PSO based on Legendre orthogonal polynomials. An additional control variable is introduced and transcribes the original optimal problem to a problem with fixed final time, and one dimension searching method based on interval analysis is used to optimize the additional control variable. Furthermore, a theorem on how to find the boundaries of the coefficient of polynomials is proved. Compared with basic PSO, LCPSO has traits of lower dimensions and smoother control variable. An example of trajectory optimization shows the effectiveness of the LCPSO algorithm.

Interactive medical image segmentation methods have become increasingly popular in recent years. These methods combine manual labeling and automatic segmentation, reducing the workload of annotation while maintaining high accuracy. However, most current interactive segmentation frameworks are limited to 2D image data, and are not suitable for 3D image data due to the large size and high complexity of 3D data, as well as the challenges posed by information asymmetry and sparse annotation. In this paper, we propose SliceProp, an interactive segmentation framework that implements slice-wise Label Bidirectional Propagation (LBP) for 3D medical image segmentation. SliceProp extends the interactive 2D image segmentation algorithm to 3D image segmentation, and can handle 3D data with large size and high complexity. Moreover, equipped with a Backtracking Feedback Check (BFC) module, SliceProp effectively addresses the issues of information asymmetry and spatial sparse annotation in 3D medical image segmentation. Additionally, we adopt an uncertainty-based criterion to pri-oritize the slices to be refined interactively, which enhances the efficiency of the interaction process by enabling the model to focus on the regions with the most unreliable predictions. SliceProp is evaluated on two datasets and achieves promising results compared to state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper, we formulate and investigate a memristor-based switching network which is directly extended from Itoh and Chua's chaotic circuit. Conditions are derived which ensure the existence of an equilibrium point and the uniformly stable for state trajectories of the memristor-based switching network. The analysis in the paper employs results from the theory of differential equations with discontinuous right-hand side as introduced by Filippov. It is believed that the criteria in this paper is also valuable in the design of memristor-based switching network which can be used to solve efficiently classes of optimization problems arising in practical engineering applications.

In human-robot systems, ensuring user safety amidst external disturbances remains paramount. An efficient variable impedance control (VIC) technique is designed to enhance human-robot interaction, particularly in scenarios with external force disturbances. By dynamically adapting impedance parameters in response to detected changes in contact force, VIC achieves heightened system flexibility. The robust stability of the VIC system is rigorously established using the Lyapunov approach, with a parameter update law tailored for a lower limb supernumerary robotic limb robot. Through simulations and experiments, the efficacy of the system in maintaining a specific safety margin is demonstrated. Moreover, the technique offers a pragmatic solution to accommodate individual variations in walking gait and cross-user disparities in interaction. The proposed method contributes to advancing the safety and adaptability of cross-user human-robot systems.
