Visual saliency is an important cue in human visual system, it can identify salient region in image. Image contrast has been utilized as an effective feature to detect the salient region. The conventional contrast measures utilize both spectral and spatial properties of image in many salient region detection methods. However, they only consider the local characteristics of image region, consequently, the global characteristics are neglected. This paper presented a new contrast measure by exploiting both local and global characteristics of image regions. Furthermore, the proposed measure is utilized to perform salient region detection in image. Experiments are conducted on the MSRA test database to compare the performance of the proposed approach with the state-of-the-art salient region detection algorithms.

Detecting contradictive texts is a crucial and fundamental work for text understanding just like textual entailment. Textual contradiction occurs when two different texts cannot both be true at the same time. This paper focuses on the linguistic phenomena behind textual contradiction, including quantity exclusion, temporal exclusion, spatial exclusion, modifier exclusion, antonym and negation. In this paper, the Chinese textual contradiction approach using linguistic phenomena has been put forward and a number of experiments on basis of one textual entailment system have been made to evaluate this approach. The experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the Chinese textual contradiction recognition approach using linguistic phenomena. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Clinical practice guidelines aim to help doctors and patients to improve the quality of care, reduce unjustified practice variations and reduce healthcare costs. The study of medical events is of special significance in medicine. However, in most existing medical guidelines, there is a lack of effective methods and tools to describe medical events. This paper analyzes the medical guidelines and the events in those guidelines, discusses the definition of semantic event and the theoretical model of event proposed by Vendler. On this basis, the paper introduces the importance as an additional dimension in the definition on events. Events of guidelines can be extracted according to this definition. We convert those extracted events using the XSLT to generate their RDF semantic data. The generated semantic data are mapped with not only their relevance of the well-known medical ontology such as SNOMED CT, but also used in the system SeSRUA, a semantically-enabled system for rational use of antibiotics. The experiments show that it can promote the rational use of drugs in the development of information technology and knowledge management. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

The process flow and system structure of automatic batch weighing system are presented. In order to increase production speed and dosing accuracy, the multi-level dosing control model (high/low speed dosing + inching dosing) is designed. Besides, the inching dosing mode is adopted to accurately compensate the weight deviation. In order to solve the problem that the fall of materials in-air cannot be easily controlled and out of tolerance. The multi-level dosing control model and preact will correct after each dosing dynamically with iteration method, moreover, the target value is predicted with second-order estimator, so as to increase the dosing speed with high weighing accuracy. The successful application proves that the control model can realize the rapid and accurate control of batch weighing process and has quite favourable control and reliability.

Service provenance can be defined as a profile of service execution history. Queries of service provenance data can answer questions such as when and by whom a server is invoked? which services operate on this data? What might be the root cause for the service failure? Most of the organizations today collect and manage their own service provenance in order to trace service execution failures, locate service bottlenecks, guide resource allocation, detect and prevent abnormal behaviors. As services become ubiquitous, there is an increasing demand for proving service provenance management as a service. This paper describes ProvenanceLens, a two-tier service provenance management framework. The top tier is the service provenance capturing and storage subsystem and the next tier provides analysis and inference capabilities of service provenance data, which are value-added functionality for service health diagnosis and remedy. Both tiers are built based on the service provenance data model, an essential and core component of ProvenanceLens, which categorizes all service provenance data into three broad categories: basic provenance, composite provenance and application provenance. In addition, ProvenanceLens provides a suite of basic provenance operations, such as select, trace, aggregate. The basic provenance data is collected through a light-weight service provenance capturing subsystem that monitors service execution workflows, collects service profiling data, encapsulates service invocation dependencies. The composite and application provenance data are aggregated through a selection of provenance operations. We demonstrate the effectiveness of ProvenanceLens using a real world educational service currently in operation for a dozen universities in China.

Extracting non-rigid object from images can be used in object recognition, medical image analysis, video monitoring, etc. In order to improve the efficiency and accuracy of visual object extraction, we design a candidate shape generator based on a mixture strategy, called mixture generator, it combines the image data driven method with model parameter driven method, and tends to generate valid shape in area which has a high shape prior density value by exploiting the GPDM model, so the efficiency of search is greatly improved. To prove the accuracy of our mixture generator, we have done experiments under the framework of global optimization algorithm (simulated annealing) on the FGNET face database. Experiments show that, compared with traditional ASM algorithm, our method is not only insensitive to initialization conditions, but also can put up with clutters and realize a more robust object extraction.

Emotions convey information. We present an emotion understanding system to excavate information from emotions. The system infers mental states, personalities and cooperativeness of agents, related actions, and related events from agents' emotions by the rule-like meta-knowledge about emotions. Our system can be used for agents to make decisions, process knowledge, and interact with users.

The dramatic growth of massive semantic data has brought about great challenges to the distributed storage for large data. The core technology of distributed storage is graph partitioning. This paper discussed the partition mechanism for graph data flow and the strategy of partitioning heuristic function, and the partitioning algorithm and implementation process of graph data flow for the RDF file. The experiment verified the validity of the partitioning algorithm for graph data flow by comparing with METIS (a multi-level graph partitioning algorithm) and hash partitioning methods, using several true RDF datasets.

As maritime weather and other environmental changes are more and more complex and frequent, ships traveling along established routes may encounter some cases where people are unable to react quickly. The navigational expert system gets real-time information of ships and target ships through AIS and VTS, and stores these data into databases, then uses certain rules to decide if some certain areas of the route are feasible, and allows the ship to bypass the infeasible areas, finally generating the best route. By taking all the various factors into account, we can generate a real-time and actually useful route based on the planned routes. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Subspace learning is most traditional and important in multimedia analysis. Numerous researches have focused on how to introduce machine learning and statistical methods to multimedia subspace learning for semantic understanding and denoising, and have gained remarkable achievement in different multimedia applications, such as content-based retrieval, data clustering, face recognition, etc. However, most of these researches are based on multimedia data of single modality. Nowadays, with the rapid development of multimedia and information technology, multimedia data of different modalities often coexist, and the presence of one has a complementary effect on the other to some extent. Because different multimedia data are usually represented with heterogeneous low-level features and there exists the wellknown semantic gap, it is interesting and challenging to learn multimedia semantics by multi-feature subspace learning of different modalities. In this paper, we analyze sparse canonical correlation between feature matrices of different multimedia data, construct an isomorphic sparse multi-feature subspace;moreover, we propose subspace optimization strategy with correlation fusion, which explores both geometrical-based content correlation and graph-based semantic correlation. Our algorithm has been applied to content-based multimodal retrieval and data classification. Comprehensive experiments have demonstrated the superiority of our method over several existing algorithms. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.
