Light field image (LFI) quality assessment is becoming more and more important, which helps to better guide the acquisition, processing and application of immersive media. However, due to the inherent high dimensional characteristics of LFI, the LFI quality assessment turns into a multi-dimensional problem that requires consideration of the quality degradation in both spatial and angular dimensions. Therefore, we propose a novel Tensor oriented No-reference Light Field image Quality evaluator (Tensor-NLFQ) based on tensor theory. Specifically, since the LFI is regarded as a low-rank 4D tensor, the principle components of four oriented sub-aperture view stacks are obtained via Tucker decomposition. Then, the Principal Component spatial Characteristic (PCSC) is designed to measure the spatial-dimensional quality of LFI considering its global naturalness and local frequency properties. Finally, the Tensor Angular Variation Index (TAVI) is proposed to measure angular consistency quality by analyzing the structural similarity distribution between the first principal component and each view in the view stack. Extensive experimental results on four publicly available LFI quality databases demonstrate that the proposed Tensor-NLFQ model outperforms state-of-the-art 2D, 3D, multi-view, and LFI quality assessment algorithms. Learning based Facial Image Compression with Semantic Fidelity Metric

Surveillance and security scenarios usually require high efficient facial image compression scheme for face recognition and identification. While either traditional general image codecs or special facial image compression schemes only heuristically refine codec separately according to face verification accuracy metric. We propose a Learning based Facial Image Compression (LFIC) framework with a novel Regionally Adaptive Pooling (RAP) module whose parameters can be automatically optimized according to gradient feedback from an integrated hybrid semantic fidelity metric, including a successfully exploration to apply Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) as metric directly in image compression scheme. The experimental results verify the framework’s efficiency by demonstrating performance improvement of 71.41%, 48.28% and 52.67% bitrate saving separately over JPEG2000, WebP and neural network-based codecs under the same face verification accuracy distortion metric. We also evaluate LFIC’s superior performance gain compared with latest specific facial image codecs. Visual experiments also show some interesting insight on how LFIC can automatically capture the information in critical areas based on semantic distortion metrics for optimized compression, which is quite different from the heuristic way of optimization in traditional image compression algorithms. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have made tremendous success in optical images classification recently. However, in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) target classification, it is difficult to annotate a large amount of real SAR images to train CNNs. Sufficient annotated images can be easily obtained through simulation, but the disparity between the simulated images and the real images makes them difficult to directly apply to the real images classification. In this paper, we propose a model that integrates multi-kernel maximum mean discrepancy (MK-MMD) and domain-adversarial training to alleviate this problem. Simulated SAR images with annotation and unlabeled real SAR images are used to train our model. First, we use domain-adversarial training to prompt the model to extract domain-invariant features. Then, the MK-MMD between the hidden representations of simulated images and real images is reduced to narrow domain discrepancy. Experimental results on the real SAR dataset demonstrate that our method effectively solves the domain shift problem and improves the classification accuracy. © 2021 IEEE.

The Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) enables bitrate adaptation through different representations of the same content. It is common to encode random access point (RAP) pictures at segment boundaries to support representation switching. As an open group of pictures (GOP) results into a temporary discontinuity of the video playback due to the inability to decode some pictures when switching representations, closed GOP prediction structures are normally used in DASH. This paper proposes two similar methods for using the open GOP prediction structure in DASH representations while a full picture rate is maintained also during representation switching. The first method is enabled with straightforward changes in the decoding of the High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265/HEVC) standard, whereas the second method utilizes the adaptive resolution change feature of the scalable (SHVC) extension of H.265/HEVC. Experiments show that the proposed methods outperform the use of closed GOPs by 5.6% on average in terms of Bjontegaard delta bitrate (BD-rate).

Recently, numerous salient object detection methods are proposed for different data types. And a reliable method, which can accurately extract complete salient objects, is beneficial to various vision tasks. However, existing methods may fail in highlighting the entire salient object uniformly. In this work, we propose a simple and universal framework aiming to improve the detection result of existing methods. To remove inaccurate salient regions, we apply location prior and adaptive de-noising to prior saliency maps extracted from existing methods in the pre-processing step. Then, an iteration optimization algorithm considering local smoothness and global similarity is introduced to refine the pre-processed saliency map. The experimental results show that the proposed framework can universally enhance the performance of state-of-the-art salient object detection methods for 2D, 3D and light field data.

Light field image quality assessment (LF-IQA) plays a significant role due to its guidance to Light Field (LF) contents acquisition, processing and application. The LF can be represented as 4-D signal, and its quality depends on both angular consistency and spatial quality. However, few existing LF-IQA methods concentrate on effects caused by angular inconsistency. Especially, no-reference methods lack effective utilization of 2D angular information. In this paper, we focus on measuring the 2-D angular consistency for LF-IQA. The Micro-Lens Image (MLI) refers to the angular domain of the LF image, which can simultaneously record the angular information in both horizontal and vertical directions. Since the MLI contains 2D angular information, we propose a No-Reference Light Field image Quality assessment model based on MLI (LF-QMLI). Specifically, we first utilize Global Entropy Distribution (GED) and Uniform Local Binary Pattern descriptor (ULBP) to extract features from the MLI, and then pool them together to measure angular consistency. In addition, the information entropy of SubAperture Image (SAI) is adopted to measure spatial quality. Extensive experimental results show that LF-QMLI achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

The Super-Low Frequency （SLF） electromag- netic prospecting technique, adopted as a non-imaging remote sensing tool for depth sounding, is systematically proposed for subsurface geological survey. In this paper, we propose and theoretically illustrate natural source magnetic amplitudes as SLF responses for the first step. In order to directly calculate multi-dimensional theoretical SLF responses, modeling algorithms were developed and evaluated using the finite difference method. The theore- tical results of three-dimensional （3-D） models show that the average normalized SLF magnetic amplitude responses were numerically stable and appropriate for practical interpretation. To explore the depth resolution, three-layer models were configured. The modeling results prove that the SLF technique is more sensitive to conductive objective layers than high resistive ones, with the SLF responses of conductive objective layers obviously show- ing uprising amplitudes in the low frequency range. Afterwards, we proposed an improved Frequency-Depth transformation based on Bostick inversion to realize the depth sounding by empirically adjusting two parameters. The SLF technique has already been successfully applied in geothermal exploration and coalbed methane （CBM） reservoir interpretation, which demonstrates that the proposed methodology is effective in revealing low resistive distributions. Furthermore, it siginificantly contributes to reservoir identification with electromagnetic radiation anomaly extraction. Meanwhile, the SLF inter- pretation results are in accordance with dynamic production status of CBM reservoirs, which means it could provide an economical, convenient and promising method for exploring and monitoring subsurface geo-objects.

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental task in indoor scene understanding. Most previous supervised approaches rely on densely annotated image data sets. Due to the limited amount of images with segmentation labels, the performance of existing networks is greatly limited. In this paper, we exploit temporal correlation in video frames to improve the performance and robustness of segmentation networks. Two effective learning strategies are proposed to propagate the information from a few labeled frames to their immediate neighbor frames. First, we scale up training dataset for supervised semantic segmentation networks by generating pseudo ground-truth for neighboring frames from a labeled frame using filtered homography transformation. Furthermore, we introduce a self-supervised loss function to ensure temporal consistency between the segmentation results of adjacent frames. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques for semantic segmentation on NYU-Depth V2 dataset.

Recently, reinforced adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithms have achieved remarkable success in tile-based 360-degree video streaming. However, they heavily rely on accurate viewport prediction. To alleviate this issue, we propose a hierarchical reinforcement-learning (RL) based ABR algorithm, dubbed 360HRL. Specifically, 360HRL consists of a top agent and a bottom agent. The former is used to decide whether to download a new segment for continuous playback or re-download an old segment for correcting wrong bitrate decisions caused by inaccurate viewport estimation, and the latter is used to select bitrates for tiles in the chosen segment. In addition, 360HRL adopts a two-stage training methodology. In the first stage, the bottom agent is trained under the environment where the top agent always chooses to download a new segment. In the second stage, the bottom agent is fixed and the top agent is optimized with the help of a heuristic decision rule. Experimental results demonstrate that 360HRL outperforms existing RL-based ABR algorithms across a broad of network conditions and quality of experience (QoE) objectives.
