Surface-wave imaging with nonrandom traffic seismic sources

Passive surface wave imaging has been a powerful tool for near-surface characterization in urban areas, which extracts surface wave signals from ambient seismic noise and then estimates subsurface shear wave velocity by inversion of the measured phase velocity. The high-frequency (approximately >1 Hz) seismic noise fields in urban environments are dominantly induced by human activities such as the vehicle traffic. Traffic seismic sources are nonrandomly distributed in time and space. Applying standard interferometric techniques to recordings from these nonrandom noise sources makes the Green's function liable to estimation errors. We analyze the influence of using nonrandom traffic seismic sources for surface wave imaging. With nonrandom traffic seismic sources in time, spurious signals are generated in the cross-correlation function. With nonrandom traffic seismic sources in space, surface-wave phase velocities could be overestimated in the dispersion measurement. We provide an overview of solutions for surface-wave imaging with nonrandom traffic seismic sources in time and space, aiming to improve the retrieval of high-frequency surface waves and achieve reliable results from ultrashort (tens of seconds) observations for near-surface characterization. © 2025 The Authors

Evaluation of Historical Snow Cover over the Tibetan Plateau in CMIP6

Snow cover over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) (TPSC) has garnered significant attention as a crucial indicator of climate change, along with its variations and related climate processes. However, due to the complex terrain of the TP, most numerical models exhibit notable uncertainty in simulating snow conditions in this area. This study evaluates historical snow simulations and related climate anomalies over the TP in numerical models from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). The CMIP6 model simulations are compared with two observation-based products across different seasons and temporal scales, and the results indicate that the CMIP6 multimodel ensemble (MME) mean reasonably captures the spatial distribution of the annual and seasonal climatological mean TP snow, albeit with weaker magnitudes compared to observations. The CMIP6 MME performs better over the western TP than the eastern regions, showing a higher reproducibility of the long-term warming trends and declining snow cover trends, partly due to the atmospheric circulation anomalies related to global warming. Additionally, some CMIP6 models successfully capture the interannual variability of TPSC and its relationship with associated climate factors. Our work emphasizes the importance of CMIP6 model selection and pays attention to data reliability in interpreting CMIP6 model results across different TP regions when studying snow cover variations and climate effects using numerical models.

Dense-array ambient noise tomography is a powerful tool for achieving high-resolution subsurface imaging, significantly impacting geohazard prevention and control. Conventional dense-array studies, however, require simultaneous observations of numerous stations for extensive coverage. To conduct a comprehensive karst feature investigation with limited stations, we designed a new synchronous–asynchronous observation system that facilitates dense array observations. We conducted two rounds of asynchronous observations, each lasting approximately 24 h, in combination with synchronous backbone stations. We achieved wide-ranging coverage of the study area utilizing 197 nodal receivers, with an average station spacing of 7 m. The beamforming results revealed distinct variations in the noise source distributions between day and night. We estimated the source strength in the stationary phase zone and used a weighting scheme for stacking the cross-correlation functions (C1 functions) to suppress the influence of nonuniform noise source distributions. The weights were derived from the similarity coefficients between multicomponent C1 functions related to Rayleigh waves. We employed the cross-correlation of C1 functions (C2 methods) to obtain the empirical Green's functions between asynchronous stations. To eliminate artifacts in C2 functions from higher-mode surface waves in C1 functions, we filtered the C1 functions on the basis of different particle motions linked to multimode Rayleigh waves. The dispersion measurements of Rayleigh waves obtained from both the C1 and C2 functions were utilized in surface wave tomography. The inverted three-dimensional (3D) shear-wave (S-wave) velocity model reveals two significant low-velocity zones at depths ranging from 40 to 60 m, which align well with the karst caves found in the drilling data. EFKAN: A KAN-Integrated Neural Operator For Efficient Magnetotelluric Forward Modeling

Magnetotelluric (MT) forward modeling is fundamental for improving the accuracy and efficiency of MT inversion. Neural operators (NOs) have been effectively used for rapid MT forward modeling, demonstrating their promising performance in solving the MT forward modeling-related partial differential equations (PDEs). Particularly, they can obtain the electromagnetic field at arbitrary locations and frequencies. In these NOs, the projection layers have been dominated by multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), which may potentially reduce the accuracy of solution due to they usually suffer from the disadvantages of MLPs, such as lack of interpretability, overfitting, and so on. Therefore, to improve the accuracy of MT forward modeling with NOs and explore the potential alternatives to MLPs, we propose a novel neural operator by extending the Fourier neural operator (FNO) with Kolmogorov-Arnold network (EFKAN). Within the EFKAN framework, the FNO serves as the branch network to calculate the apparent resistivity and phase from the resistivity model in the frequency domain. Meanwhile, the KAN acts as the trunk network to project the resistivity and phase, determined by the FNO, to the desired locations and frequencies. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method not only achieves higher accuracy in obtaining apparent resistivity and phase compared to the NO equipped with MLPs at the desired frequencies and locations but also outperforms traditional numerical methods in terms of computational speed. Extremely Fe-rich beryl from Zhangji deposit: Implications for the unique volcanic fluid environment of beryllium mineralization in Southeast China

Beryl group minerals and bertrandite have been identified in the altered rocks of the Zhangji deposit in the volcanic intrusion complex of Southeast China. Complex internal textures and compositional variations characterise two groups of beryl (primary magmatic beryl and secondary hydrothermal beryl). The primary beryl (Brl-I) with low FeOT (2O (T, 2.60 wt% MgO, and 2.31 wt% Na2O occurs along fractures in beryl crystals. (2) The extremely Fe-enriched beryl (Brl-II-2) has with up to 11.59 wt% FeOT, 1.70 wt% MgO, and 1.53 wt% Na2O and is related to extended metasomatism of Fe-rich fluids. Furthermore, the detailed textural study revealed that beryl evolved through reactions to form bertrandite, K-feldspar, and muscovite. Compared with primary K-feldspar which exhibited a clear contact boundary with surrounding minerals, secondary K-feldspar was adularia and lacked complete crystal form. In addition, compared with primary muscovite which was a long lamellar crystalline shape, secondary muscovite was distributed in clusters in beryl and showed as small grains with higher Fe content. Fe-rich beryl is rarely reported, to our knowledge, the extremely Fe-, Mg-, and Na-rich beryl in Zhangji deposit contains the second highest Fe content in the world, only lower than that found in Latium (Italy), of the metallogenic environment formed as a result of iron-rich and strong oxidation fluids. The strong volcanic magmatic activity during the Late Mesozoic formed a volcanic intrusion complex in Southeast China, this extremely Fe-rich beryl was formed in the special volcanic hydrothermal environment of the volcanic intrusion complex along Southeast China. © 2025 The Author(s)

The India-Eurasia collision during the Cenozoic has established widespread fold-and-thrust belts in the Eurasia continental interiors, which are important for understanding the intracontinental convergence processes and have been proved to be rich in hydrocarbon resource. Despite the significance, the structures along the eastern Pamir foreland fold-and-thrust belts are blind and covered by the Cenozoic monocline, which hinders the mechanism of intracontinental convergence and the potential exploration targets to be comprehensively understood. In this study, we deciphered the blind structures along the Qimugen fold-and-thrust belt on the eastern Pamir foreland with interpretations of seismic reflection profiles and structural forward modeling. Our analyses indicate that the Qimugen fold-and-thrust belt features a structural wedge consisting of six thrust sheets which involve the Paleozoic strata to form anticlinal fault-bend folds. During the late Cenozoic deformation, the structural wedge absorbs ∼56.39 km of horizontal shortening in total, of which ∼52 km are accommodated by the backthrust. These finding indicate lateral, eastward expansion of the Pamir in late Cenozoic, which was accommodated by westward underthrusting of the lower Tarim crust. We propose that the Carboniferous-Permian reservoirs in the anticlinal fault-bend folds of these thrust sheets are the favorable targets for the future hydrocarbon exploration, with the trap formation coinciding with the hydrocarbon generation, migration and accumulation. This study sheds light on the mechanism of convergence between eastern Pamir and Tarim Basin, and provides insights into the future hydrocarbon exploration planning for the Carboniferous-Permian plays in the southwestern Tarim Basin. © 2025 The Author(s). Optical Modeling of Sea Salt Aerosols Using in situ Measured Size Distributions and the Impact of Larger Size Particles

Sea salt aerosols play a critical role in regulating the global climate through their interactions with solar *** size distribution of these particles is crucial in determining their bulk optical *** this study,we analyzed in situ measured size distributions of sea salt aerosols from four field campaigns and used multi-mode lognormal size distributions to fit the *** employed super-spheroids and coated super-spheroids to account for the particles’non-sphericity,inhomogeneity,and hysteresis effect during the deliquescence and crystallization *** compute the singlescattering properties of sea salt aerosols,we used the state-of-the-art invariant imbedding T-matrix method,which allows us to obtain accurate optical properties for sea salt aerosols with a maximum volume-equivalent diameter of 12μm at a wavelength of 532 *** results demonstrated that the particle models developed in this study were successful in replicating both the measured depolarization and lidar ratios at various relative humidity(RH)***,we observed that large-size particles with diameters larger than 4μm had a substantial impact on the optical properties of sea salt aerosols,which has not been accounted for in previous ***,excluding particles with diameters larger than 4μm led to underestimating the scattering and backscattering coefficients by 27%−38%and 43%−60%,respectively,for the ACE-Asia field ***,the depolarization ratios were underestimated by 0.15 within the 50%−70%RH *** findings emphasize the necessity of considering large particle sizes for optical modeling of sea salt aerosols.

In this study,Typhoon Rammasun(2014)was simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting model to examine the kinetic energy during rapid intensification(RI).Budget analyses revealed that in the inner area of the typhoon,the conversion from symmetric divergent kinetic energy associated with the collocation of strong cyclonic circulation and inward flow led to an increase in the symmetric rotational kinetic energy in the lower *** increase in the symmetric rotational kinetic energy in the mid and upper troposphere resulted from the upward transport of symmetric rotational kinetic energy from the lower *** the outer area,both typhoon and Earth’s rotation played equally important roles in the conversion from symmetric divergent kinetic energy to symmetric rotational kinetic energy in the lower *** decrease in the symmetric rotational kinetic energy in the upper troposphere was caused by the conversion to asymmetric rotational kinetic energy through the collocation of symmetric tangential rotational winds and the radial advection of asymmetric tangential rotational winds by radial environmental winds.

Changes in Spring Snow Cover over the Eastern and Western Tibetan Plateau and Their Associated Mechanism

The spring snow cover(SC)over the western Tibetan Plateau(TP)(TPSC)(W_TPSC)and eastern TPSC(E_TPSC)have displayed remarkable decreasing and increasing trends,respectively,during 1985–*** current work investigates the possible mechanisms accounting for these distinct TPSC *** results indicate that the decrease in W_TPSC is primarily attributed to rising temperatures,while the increase in E_TPSC is closely linked to enhanced *** circulation analysis shows that the essential system responsible for the TPSC changes is a significant anticyclonic system centered over the northwestern *** anomalous descending motion and adiabatic heating linked to this anticyclone leads to warmer temperatures and consequent snowmelt over the western ***,anomalous easterly winds along the southern flank of this anticyclone serve to transport additional moisture from the North Pacific,leading to an increase in snowfall over the eastern *** analysis reveals that the anomalous anticyclone is associated with an atmospheric wave pattern that originates from upstream *** warming of the subtropical North Atlantic(NA)sea surface temperature(SST)induces an atmospheric pattern resembling a wave train that travels eastward across the Eurasian continent before reaching the ***,the decline in winter sea ice(SIC)over the Barents Sea exerts a persistent warming influence on the atmosphere,inducing an anomalous atmospheric circulation that propagates southeastward and strengthens the northwest TP anticyclone in ***,an enhancement of subtropical stationary waves has resulted in significant increases in easterly moisture fluxes over the coastal areas of East Asia,which further promotes more snowfall over eastern TP.
